It’s been brought to my attention from within the Valley business community that there is work being done behind the scenes  to TRY to attract the greatest spectacle in golf to our busy sports landscape, The Ryder Cup. What a coup IF it’s pulled off.

Additionally, The PGA Championship could be in play for the Valley. The “Major” is  moving from August to May in 2019,  which would allow Scottsdale the chance to bid on the event.

TPC Scottsdale would be the venue.

Oh god, please, no…

That course is among the lamest designs the PGA Tour plays.

Why would May be okay in Scottsdale and not August?  They've played the August-held PGA Championship in worse weather than Scottsdale gets in August.  The 2007 PGA, for instance, was held in Tulsa Oklahoma.

And why is major in quotes in the article?  I'd understand if this were the PLAYERS where reasonable people can disagree about whether it's okay to call it a major.  The PGA has been a major since at least the 50s.

I like the TPC Scottsdale, but I'm not sure how I'd feel about it hosting a prestigious event.  But the thought of having the 17th hole at a Ryder Cup being a drivable par-4 is pretty neat.

The conditions at that 2007 PGA is a huge reason why we don't see many PGAs held in the south anymore.

Yeah, but they're gonna be able to go back to some of those southern places with a date in May.

Scottsdale, AZ Average Temperatures:
May: 66° - 92° F
August: 80° - 102° F

Definitely not the PGA, but the Ryder Cup there would be intriguing. 16 would be a madhouse. Not sure I'm 100% sold on it, but it could be a crazy venue.

I presume they wouldn't build the stadium for a more prestigious event - that would be a mistake.

I like that course for a match play event.  Those last few holes, especially 15 and 17, a risk reward par 5 and a really short but tricky par 4, would make for some drama in the Ryder cup.

Have you played the course?

Cuz it sucks. :-) 16 is a stupid hole and needs the crowds to turn it into anything. 15 and 17 are okay.

That makes me a little sad.  I was hoping to play the course this summer or next.  I really enjoy the course in the video games.  I might still try to play it, but knowing I might not like it as much makes it a lower priority I guess.

I'm not a fan of majors played on regular tour stops, so I'd vote a no on the PGA. A Ryder Cup could be interesting, but there hasn't been a host in the western U.S. since long before anyone became concerned about European television schedules.

The most probable outcome is TPC Scottsdale hosting a Presidents Cup.

I wouldn't say it sucks but there are much better courses around than the the stadium course. 15, 17 and 18 are great holes to finish up on. Even 16 gives a birdie chance to make up ground that can be a bogey if you are off just a bit.

I doubt that TPC will ever host a major but if there was a course to do it I would bet on Parson's and Scottsdale National.

I think having the Ryder Cup there would be great.

No I haven't.

I also agree with @Chilli Dipper that (in general) I like that major courses are usually courses that aren't regularly used. (Torrey, Bethpage and Pebble being a couple of obvious exceptions)

There are a zillion nice courses in Arizona, I'm sure there is one that we haven't seen that could host a big tournament.

That's a good point. It's nice when we see new courses that we don't normally see.

Counterpoint: Bethpage, Torrey, Pebble.

    • Day 60 - 2024-11-29 Got about 3.5' of snow today, so I was going to go to Golf Evolution, but… I only left the house to throw some snow. Instead, i checked out my putting stroke on HackMotion in the basement. Turns out… it's pretty good, and I'm very in touch with what I'm doing.
    • First time playing this game, Spanish is my native language. It was impossible for me. After 4 worlds I run out of worlds that have the letters I've already found that can be combined with the remaining letters.. just repeated the 4th world to knew the answer. I know the world but it never came to my mind.
