I am a photographer.  I have published my photographs in several magazines and written several technical articles that have also been published.  I have done numerous projects for regional banks and hospitals.  

 

I took exactly one photography class in high school.  I think it's "arrogant and presumptuous" to assume one must have a degree.

Like it or not, there are certain professions that do require a significant amount of study, training, and experience before you're acknowledged as a member of that professional community.   Doctors, engineers, attorneys, CPA's, etc...  I do my own taxes.  But I'm not an accountant.

I wanted to dislike DeChambeau in the beginning because he reminds me of some self-righteous dork from the youth group. However I've come to appreciate his appeal as an outsider. He is not the first golfer to market himself in this way. I'm just barely old enough to remember a couple of other pros that rankled people on their way up. A few more wins and nobody will remember the guy was ever strange.

FWIW, my brother is an actual degreed senior scientist who travels the world saving lives and addressing governments. The way I know him, he would be overjoyed to see anyone applying the scientific method in a rigorous and honest way. I will ask him if he finds golf scientists insulting. I somehow doubt it.

The question isn't whether golf science, or scientists are valid, of course they are.

The issue here is whether someone who doesn't even have a bachelor degree should claim the distinction of being a scientist, specifically a physicist, and be held up as an expert in the field....

First, can you point to something where he claims to be some type of physics genius, as opposed to saying he is trying to take a scientific approach to the game?  Is he holding himself out to the public as a "scientist" where people are paying him good money for a profession he is not educated for?  No, he is not........no harm imo

Second, would you argue that Bill Gates is not really a computer scientist becasue he dropped out of college and didn't get the degree?

Bill Gates is a proven, successful computer expert who has spent his entire professional life working at, hell, defining, the forefront of the industry.

BD is a golfer, who took some science classes in college.  And yes, he's appearing in commercials, for which he's well paid, attempting to lend credence for certain manufacturers to their claims of technical, scientifically proven superiority, based on the incorrect perception that he's somehow qualified to do so.

But, beyond that, he's just a goober....

Well Gates did spend most of his entire adult life helping revolutionize the computer industry. So we'll give him a pass. Let's not put DeChambeau in that category yet.

I don't dislike the guy at all. He's quirky, which is fine. He has a different approach, which is fine. And he's probably not doing it himself, the golf media may be.  But just because you took some physics courses while you went to college to play golf, does not make you a scientist. I won some money last week winning my league tournament. So then do I get to a call myself a professional golfer?

I like the fact the guy embraces science and technology in his approach to golf. But he is an amateur at best still. Even new hire engineers and scientists have to prove themselves at engineering and science.

WOW! I am sure there are golfers we like or don't like for our own reasons, and that's OK. Lots of us speak what we think rather than what we know...It's called opinion. Maybe this thread should morph into "Why I like/don't like...". -Marv
