Today on slashdot there was a story about another social media post about how iPhones take good pictures so DSLRs are dead* and Android is years behind.  That's not the point of this.  What I found funny and a very "engineer" approach to the question of bokeh was this short exchange.

* iPhones take good/great photographs but because you bring your iPhone into a restaurant and not your DSLR does not mean DSLRs are dead.  iPhones and Androids have replaced the point-and-shoot and are *potentially* on their way to replacing DSLRs but a good ILC in the right hands is going to kick smartphones asses for a while yet.

I don't see camera phones replacing a dslr anytime soon. Sure they are handy but limited. No way I could shoot an eagle in a tree at 50 yards with my iPhone camera and get anything near what I get with my older D3000 and a lens

Obviously dSLRs are not going to die anytime soon in the hands of photographers ...but I think the idea that the dSLR for the masses - i.e. non photographers - is dying is true.  The iPhone 7S is "good enough" for a lot of people and combined with its convenience, it's all that is needed in many cases.

But specialty photography like you're talking about is probably always going to benefit from a real camera.  So would anything that requires specific exposure times, like sports and night photography.

But that troll in the OP is obviously not somebody who appreciates any kind of photography, apparently.

Funny, I was literally thinking the other day about whether or not I want to upgrade my non-phone camera, which I use exclusively for golf-related (evolvr, "my swing" thread)

I just replaced my Nikon D70 with Nikon D750 - a fantastic camera.  Photography is one of my favorite hobbies (along with golf, of course).  I have been photographing since college.

While phone cameras have replaced your point-and-shoot cameras, to date they do not even come close to a good DSLR cameras.  You just can't control the aperture, speed and ISO like you can with DSLR cameras.

Smartphones have already obliterated the point-and-shoot camera market for most people, they ARE good enough for 90% of the still and video picture taking most people do, and they upload pictures FAR easier. The big name camera folks were very slow on the uptake integrating uploading/social media, theirs apps were clumsy in comparison.

The DSLR is losing ground to mirrorless as well. I sold my Nikon D90 about 6 months ago, and I'm not sure I'll replace it.

And the ILC market was already a much smaller segment and they've lost ground as well, but there will always be some market for photo hobbyists, sports and zoom shooting. OTOH, since magazines and other print picture customers have declined, and more pictures are shared online, there is less need for (very) high resolution pictures. Canon, Nikon and the other big names have struggled much more over the last ten years.

The best camera is the one you have on you.

Apple is the best selling camera company in the world.

I had an Olloclip back in the day. One of the original ones I think.

With a case, it wasn't all that useful.

Dude probably broke up with his snooty artsy-fartsy girlfriend. :-P

I love photos with shallow depth of field. There's also tilt-shift.

I agree in general but really the best camera is the one that takes the photograph you want to capture.  If that's a smartphone, great.  I would never argue that people "need" an ILC.

I like that tilt-shift effect in small doses.  I've been tempted to rent a tilt-shift lens for "regular" uses i.e., architecture, etc.

Absolutely.  That's really the market (point-and-shoots) that the smartphones have destroyed.  The original slashdot article was a guy who posted to facebook about how he took "stunning" (they were good, but not "stunning") pictures of some kids in a restaurant and how he never carries his big, bulky DSLR with him to those places.  Well, duh.  20 bucks said he had a decent point-and-shoot for things like that anyway.  I only have my DSLR in restaurants if I've been carrying it around for other shots (i.e., traveling).  I never say, "oh, we're having dinner with so-and-so?  Let me grab my Nikon."

A lot of the smartphone love comes from the "ease of sharing".  Personally, I like to print my photographs and show them to no one.  I don't know why.  Maybe I don't want the criticism.  Maybe I don't think they're good enough.  Maybe I'm just old enough to not instantly think about putting shit on the internet.  I don't know, but getting images on flickr or facebook or whatever is really an after thought.

My kids have a couple of different sets of them that they use on occasion. I'm not sure why they don't use them more, maybe it is the inconvenience of having to carry the case they  stay in, or the hassle of switching them on & off and I think one of the sets won't fit the phone if it is in it's case.

They claim to like the photos, and I think they have several different zoom lenses and a fish-eye.

I've done it in photoshop a couple times but it's not really an effect I think much about, to be honest. :)   I'll try it on a couple of my pictures tonight and post the results!

Turns out I don't have a lot of pictures conducive to tilt-shift.  Here's one from the top of the Empire State Building (good candidate) and one from Crater Lake (not so good.)  You really need to shoot from an elevated position and have enough in the frame to get the full effect.

Nice! Crater Lake looks miniature enough to me.

Thanks!  That was from the second day at the park.  The first one was really hazy because of smoke from major forest fires in Northern CA and Southern OR.  I think the problem in the Crater Lake picture is that there isn't enough to blur to really drive home the effect.

Incidentally, you can walk into the crater and take a boat to the island and then hike all over the island.  It's a shit-ton of vertical feet but well worth it.  They even stop the boat and fill people's water bottles!  The water is the cleanest, bluest water I've ever seen first-hand in my life and was delicious.  Truly an amazing, beautiful place!

My mirrorless camera has all but replaced my SLR.  There are a few subjects where the SLR still would be my first choice, but not many.  With adapters, I can use all my Leica and Nikon lenses.  To me, the SLRs are getting too bulky for general/travel photography.  I started with a Canon 35mm in the 70s.  It was light and manageable.  Even without a battery pack, the pro SLRs are bigger and bulkier than my Mamiya 7.
