I have a feeling Mike Davis is saying some prayers right now. I think the wind is blowing a lot more than they thought.

Dustin Johnson is imploding

Yeah I figured the only way he would be caught is if he went the wrong direction...and that is surely happening.

Pretty wild not seeing a single red number on the board.

Well that's what the USGA and one Golf Channel broadcaster wanted. Awarded a trophy/major championship to someone who is over par is ridiculous IMO.

Rose Ogilvy and Cabrera were totally undeserving. :-P

Par is mostly there to serve as a reference for us at home.  If anything, it should be nearest integer to the professionals' expected score on a hole-by-hole basis.

You're right! Usually people who do this--almost always a frat boy-stereotype--who has to have been born on third base to be this dumb and can afford tickets to every single golf tournament--and this is my grandkids. I have no idea what the Seventies generation annoyed our parents with. If anything at golf tournaments. Now they have microphones that pick up everything. Nudge, wink.

Does the apparently unfair golf course make you want to keep watching or stop watching?

Phil -- an obscene 10 on one hole !!
Berger and Finau go 4-under on the day.
Dustin gives back 5 shots and no longer leads.
What in the Henrik is going on?

It's the U.S. Open, of course!

I was just reading yesterday about the time Justin Rose told Sean Foley that he thought his short game needed work... at the end of a season in which he led in strokes gained short game.

In fairness to Phil, only eight of those involved hitting the golf ball.

Disagree here. I have no problem with over-par winning. It’s whatever the lowest score is. This is the biggest test in golf and it’s playing that way. I just have an issue when greens get out of control and these are getting close. But the main reason these scores are this bad has more to do with the weather. This is a brutal course to play in when the wind blows. It blew hard Thursday and is blowing today.

For me, the difference between a rules breach and cheating is intent - that rule is designed for when the ball moves as you're making a stroke, or similar unintentional breaches (I believe). The moment that he said he intentionally hit the ball to stop it going down off the front and that he knew he'd probably make a better score, that is cheating. There are rules the USGA can use to DQ him if they want.

The difference between cheating and breach is whether you are avoiding the penalty assessment....is there any evidence that Michelson was trying avoid the 2 stroke penalty?

That look from Stenson looked like he wasn't sure it was his ball.  Did he need to verify his mark on the green? (#9 green, par putt)

I think back in the old days they called it "slamming the trunk." I think Phil was done with it. He'd had enough. I think he's going to regret this, a lot.

Did anyone else hear it said thirty people were looking for Dustin's ball, yesterday. What does it mean, "losing the golf course?" How is a golf course "gone?"

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
