Zach Johnson had a run in with Rule 16-2

Quote

Rule 16-2

Ball Overhanging Lip Falls into Hole

Q.Gina has played two strokes and her ball is lying on the putting green. She plays her third stroke and the ball is overhanging the hole. Before Gina can reach her ball, it falls into the hole. What is Gina`s score for the hole?

A.3. As the ball fell into the hole before 10 seconds after Gina reached the hole had passed, she is considered to have holed out with her third stroke. If Gina had reached the ball, waited 10 seconds, then the ball fell into the hole, Gina`s score for the hole would have been 4.

I understand Zach's point, but golfers should not be given indefinite time to wait for a ball to fall into the hole. Tough break. He walked to the hole & counted to 10.

It's ten seconds plus the time it takes to walk to the hole.

So if he stands there, counts to ten, then walks to the hole (directly, not circuitously), and then counts even one second, that's beyond the 10+walk.

@saevel25 According to the conversation, Zach was concerned about making a stroke at a ball in motion (the Mickelson effect?); after the ten seconds has elapsed the ball is deemed to be at rest so there would be no penalty under 14-5, If the ball falls in after ten seconds (plus time to get to the hole), there is a one stroke penalty under 16-2 and the ball is holed with the previous stroke. In other words it costs a stroke after ten seconds whether it falls in or you make a stroke.

The rule came up again at the Quicken Loans National. Ancer takes (IMO) more than "enough time to reach the hole without unreasonable delay" plus 10 seconds.  (Didn't matter, because it didn't fall in this case.)

And Mark Immelman explains the rule incorrectly as "you've got just 10 seconds to get your ball, and once you get to your ball, you've got 10 seconds." Nope.

I can understand Johnson's delay since, when he approached his ball, his playing opponent (don't remember who it was) said, "That ball's moving!"

Doesn't matter: if the time has passed, it's at rest.

From rule 16-2: When any part of the ball overhangs the lip of the hole, the player is allowed enough time to reach the hole without unreasonable delay and an additional ten seconds to determine whether the ball is at rest. If by then the ball has not fallen into the hole, it is deemed to be at rest.

What if the ball is moving away from the hole? The greens At Shinnecock were capable of that. Wouldn’t you be penalized for stroking a moving ball?

Then it is no longer overhanging the lip of the hole. Or if it is still overhanging slightly somehow, then I would take the rule as stated: deemed to be at rest.

Ridiculous rule.  He hit the ball 3 times to put it in the hole.  Birdie.  Enough of this stupid crap.  I get not allowing someone to wait all day but c’mon.

The bold is precisely why it's not "stupid crap."

He didn't hole his third shot. He got a par.

How long do you think he should wait?

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
