Just watched the video that guy is a freaking idiot. Throwing clubs? SMH...

It was obviously on a closed course/hole, no fans around, plus it was probably a bit of showmanship for the cameras.

Plus it's unlikely that the club got bent out of spec based on his throws, and if it did, the tour van at the next tournament he plays in will get it right back to spec.

Not a big deal IMO, and certainly not an action worth calling him a freaking idiot

Actuaries at such companies have calculated the chance of an average golfer making a hole in one at approximately 12,500 to 1, and the odds of a tour professional at 2,500 to 1

Seems pretty obvious to me. Tour players hit it closer far more often than average golfers do, so naturally their odds of holing one should be better.

What does anything you said have to do with it?

You stated your opinion that you think he is a freaking idiot, I stated my opinion (backed up with facts) as to why I disagree with your opinion. That's typically how conversations go on forums...

I didn't know when stating an "opinion backed up with facts" you could use words like  probably and unlikely. No fans around? He's on The European Tours Twitter acct.

All of what I'm about to say is :offtopic:

Spoiler

Facts

  1. The hole was closed for the duration he was doing this challenge
  2. No fans were present in person, he wasn't in a tournament setting
  3. He knew he was being filmed and it would be on social media
  4. If the club did get bent out of spec as a result of the throws, he would be able to get the club repaired or replaced before his next tournament

Assumptions

  1. He threw the club to add a bit of showmanship/emotion to the video
  2. The club was not damage or significantly altered as a result of him throwing it.

So with the facts presented, let's go over your opinion again. You think that someone who threw their club after narrowly missing a hole in one during a 500 shot hole in one challenge on a closed hole with no spectators present while he knew he was being filmed is a "freaking idiot". Can you explain why you think him throwing his club in this situation makes him a freaking idiot?

I dont agree with your opinion and think him throwing the club made the video more entertaining, made it seem like he was more invested in getting the hole in one, and made it easier for average golfers who have thrown clubs before to relate to him and realize that he was probably going through similar emotions that amateurs go through.

iacas, maybe this will change your mind:

You don't seem to properly understand what my "mind" is right now.

Of course a PGA Tour player is more likely to make a hole in one than a 12 handicapper.

My mind doesn't need "changed" on that.

I think this makes sense. I have no documentation to back it up. But seems like the more a ball is rolling around it would be more likely to eventually find the hole. Where as this poor lad's shots all land and stick. So, he literally has to bullseye the hole.

I will say this, I bet this guy would get a lot more birdies and way more GIR's.

Some people are claiming this guy is an idiot for getting all made but cut the guy a break. You can see from the sun going down that this guy seems to be out there all day working on this. He probably thought he'd get one...  maybe 2 before the day was over, but no dice.

I just reread the original post. I think the rolling ball is more likely to drop than the stuck ball. But I don't think high handicappers have a better chance of getting an ace. Take a look at the statistics for high handicappers in terms of GIR's. Some of them average fewer than 2 GIR's per round. Tough to get a hole in one at all if you aren't even hitting it on the green.

You could give a high handicapper 500 balls and an 8 iron. They may only land 25 or so on the green at all.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Here's a rolling Ace - https://www.golfchannel.com/news/happy-birthday-gaby-lopez-celebrates-ace-blue-bay-lead

It's just a very clear picture of a ball rolling across the green - if the hole would have been anywhere along that fairly long rollout, it likely would have fallen in.

Compare that to a closer hit within 4 feet that stops after a 3 foot roll.

If the same pro hits a green and allows a roll out forward, vs sticking it close with almost no rollout.  both cases the pro has given himself a chance by putting the hole somewhere in his statistical shot dispersion........15 feet of chance vs 3 feet of chance.....

I agree with the idea that a ball rolling some distance will be holed more often than a shot that hits, hops and stops (or releases very little).  I am not so sure about a disproportionate number of aces being recorded by high handicaps. Aces per GIR for a high handicapper, however, is likely higher than a low handicapper.

I couldn't think of a logical way to work in the fact that I had two aces this year (so far!) so I will just blurt out the brag.😉

I hit a 6I to a green (14 at Whispering Woods) a few weeks ago that never left the flag. I thought of saying "Natalie, we're tied" (she has one ace, I have zero) but didn't want to jinx myself.

Good thing, too. The ball hit a foot right of the hole, popped up a few inches, and dropped and stopped two inches in front of the ball mark. Unless I flew it in the hole — and @billchao can attest to how poorly that works out for me too — there was almost no ground covered by my ball where it could have gone in.

One hop it into the hole. Seems like that’s the key 😉

My wife and I have made 5 aces between us and none flew into the hole. They all rolled in. I believe a one hop and stop in the hole is improbable. With the pin in the way a rolling ball has a better chance of going in the hole that a ball that hops in the hole. JMHO.

    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
    • I had two events the past two days. Yesterday I was playing a course blind. Hit it solid. Hit 9/14 fairways, 12/18 greens, 34 putts. Many of those putts were the result of balls that were close-ish to the hole when they landed, but wound up a long way away once they'd finished rolling (backwards mainly). Then today, hit 11/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 37 putts, and shot 80. 8 over par and it wasn't particularly pretty. My big problem today was my pitching. I was inside 100 yards of the hole and off the green on 9 occasions.  1st - drive to about 75 yards, fanned a 58 degree short and right. On the green, but a good 40 feet away and good two putt from there (so took 3) 2nd - laid up to a bunker and it's narrow past it, so had 165 in, missed it right with an 8 iron. Wet rough, chip from about 5 yards off the green and the club snagged. It got on the green, but only temporarily. Overcorrected a bit on the next one and hit it a bit firm and it rolled out to about 35 feet. Putt didn't break and it ran on a bit and I missed the one back (greens were fast and a little bumpy, which didn't help, but doesn't excuse either). (took 5 to get down from close to the green) 4th - had about 95 from the right rough, hit it on the green and two putts (3) 5th - 90 from the fairway, tugged it and it got a firm bounce, chipped on and hit what I thought was a decent chip, but it ran out down the hill and two putts from 20 feet (4) 7th - 65 from the fairway, significant upslope and hit it a bit hard, ran long left against the collar. Tried to blade a PW, but it got under a bit so didn't advance it anything like far enough. Made a good two putt from there (4) 11th - 63 from the fairway, hit a squirrelly pitch on the green and two putts (3) 12th - 75 from the semi-rough, caught it a bit clean and it wound up on the back edge. Putting down a tier and it ran 8 feet past (that was actually a really good putt and couldn't have done any better I don't think) and missed that (4) 13th - 55 from the fairway, overcorrected and hit the big ball before the small ball. Then made a stellar up and down from 25 yards short to an elevated green with a putter (3) 15th - down in three from a greenside bunker (3) That was it. The other 9 holes I hit it on the green from outside 100 yards. So on those 9 occasions, I took 32 shots to get in the hole. 3.56 average. Terrible. Reason I'm posting this in here is to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to work on my contact with pitch shots. I don't have access to a grass range. Only mats and it's easy off a mat. Partly I think my problem is I've hit it off mats so much this winter that I've lost my judgement on where the ball is versus the ground because of the leeway granted. Open to ideas. I also suspect that under pressure I stand a bit closer to it and then get steep and hit down on it and it puts me in a bad place, but I can't seem to get myself to not do that.
