Im curious to see how they make Canadian/northern locations work. As I understand it, the bays are very open and the amount of unit heaters needed for winter would be a lot?

They seriously, seriously blast the heaters. I was at the Edison location on a nippy day, wasn't that cold, but they just maxed out the heaters and all the bays were pretty much empty. I bet the utility companies love them TopGolfs.

Wasn't familiar with Edison so I see its NJ which definitely gets winter weather. I still think the utility bill on a Minneapolis one would be another level, along with future Toronto expansion.

Definitely, but Minnesotans and Torontonians are on another level w/regards to cold weather tolerance compared to the average person, maybe TopGolf will somehow reconcile the two, find a middle ground.

Finally went with a couple of friends. It was fun. Definitely more of a bowling alley vibe and not somewhere I would go on my own.

The grips were loose on half of the clubs in my bay. I might bring a couple of my own clubs next time I go.

I believe TopGolf has developed "TopGolf Suites" (or something like that) for those locations where it isn't realistic to keep the open stalls heated. They are Simulator bays as opposed to full ranges.

I will surely be curious when they open in Montreal, Canada in the future to take a look. But with the winter we have I assume it's more like a simulator than an open bay if they wanted it open all year.

In Palm Beach, FL there are negotiations for TopGolf.  Looks like it will happen.  But there is another, probably more interesting company, Driveshack also coming to town.  It looks like a higher tech alternative.

-Offer Lessons.  Lots of varieties of this.

-Topgolf has targets you aim for, which was fun for me the one time I went.  Driveshack seems to have VR stuff on their range or something.

-Has virtual courses to play.  I would like to try that.

The Silver Legacy Casino Resort in Reno,Nv. is just about to open a state of the art Top Golf Suite. I peaked through the cracks of the construction wall and saw what looked like several simulators. On the casino website it says it will have a 18 seat bar, simulators that you can play top golf type games or play different courses, zombie dodgeball, hockey, baseball, carnival games, and more. It opens April 17th.

My daughter works for the TopGolf here in Ft. Worth.  She doesn't have her drivers license yet, so I drop her off or pick her up 3-4 times/week.  It's surprising how busy that place is, especially on weekends.  They often have a waiting list on weekends and "holidays" (like during spring break) even with 102 hitting bays.  They have a teaching pro on-staff, and I see a lot of people taking their own clubs, mostly earlier in the day.

I think it's a great way for people who don't normally play golf, or who would feel uncomfortable at a traditional driving range to be able to enjoy the sport.  It's not where I would go for a serious practice session, but would for a night out with friends.

I’ve been to the one in Edison, NJ a few times.  TopGolf is a fun activity and a good night out.  It can seem expensive but with a group of 6, which is the most they allow to play in one booth, it’s fun and not too pricey.  It’s not something for serious golf practice though IMO.  

A bit off topic but the simulator isn’t really something I’d do.  In NJ, it can get as expensive as a real round.  The only benefit is you can “play” a foursome in under 2 hours.   I’d rather be out on the course.  I have a midrange simulator in my mancave and I have my golfing buddies over occasionally and it’s fun to play courses around the world, have a few beers and never have to drive to and from the course.  It’s also good to keep maintain muscle memory over the winter months.

Kevlar, how much money would you say you dropped on the entire setup with your simulator?  Is it just the device or did you pad the walls?  Do you worry about killing your clubs on the mat?  Did you get a high end projector or something? Are you satisfied with the experience for the money?

I put in about $1000 so far, it was refurbished.  Right now I just have the software, which I run on my laptop, the sensor, and an LCD projector.  It has the option to either hit balls (foam or real) into a net, or no ball.  My screen is 9 feet high by 11 feet wide so it's pretty realistic, it has great graphics and I have 48 courses.  Normally I use no ball but I have a net as well when I use the driving range.  I don't worry about my clubs because I have the sensor set about 1/2 in. below the level of the turf mat and I have a soft tee to set the ball on.  That way my clubs don't contact the mat.  I don't let my friends or my kids use my clubs though.  They have to use their own.

Been to the one in Vegas, it was kinda cool, flashing lights and glow in the dark everything. I'd say it would be fun for a party or booze up, but the golf purist won't get much out of it.
