During the winter, once a week at most. During golf season I'll hit the range twice a week and the putting green at least once. I tend to practice more than I play. It's a bit cheaper and I can sneak away much easier when it is one or two hours at a time.

Plus I enjoy the range and working on my game.

Fairways and Greens.

I usually go to the range once or twice week. I work on my driving and wedges. I almost never seem to have a problem with my irons. I like spending most of my time in my yard chipping and putting. Short game is where I think I can cut most of my strokes.

I try to get out to the range atleast once per week. For one reason or another, if something goes wrong during a round, I attack that problem at the range. When at the course I always head straight to the putting green to get a feel for the speed that day.

I think not enough. I went a few weeks without hitting a club and paid for it score-wise. I think at least once a week from now on, I need to go to the practice area. I'll hit a few full shots to warm up after stretches, then I'll chip and pitch the rest on the chipping green. I'll pick them up and re-chip some if I didn't feel I did it particularly well. Then I'll putt until I lose my focus, hit a few range balls on the range, and back and forth.

I think my handicap on the range must be about 1.1 and on the course about 13 more strokes -

I'm at the range 2-4 times a week and am often told I have a great swing, etc. I will always hit mid irons and driver to ensure the tempo is good. However, I now spend a lot more time practicing my pitching using Pelz's 3x4 system. Always working on distance control. The main drawback is it's off the mats, which is OK, but obviously not ideal.

The range near my home (7 minutes away) does not have a practice putting green nor a short-game area, so I only get to putt and chip before a round, which is once a week. I know I need to spend more time around the green, which will happen as the days get longer and I can get to the course (20 minutes away) either before or after work on weekdays.

If I could only translate my practice range game to the course ... (sigh ... )

I find that the mats creates problems for practicing my irons as I can't take a divot (it is like hitting balls out of a hardpan trap...no fun) and it creates golfer elbow for me.

I'm hearing very good things on the new Vijay mat, and well on the way to ordering one. you should check it out.

Of the two courses I regularly play, one does not have a range (Sunday AM round) and the other (Wednesday PM League) I don't get there early enough to use it. For a while I was trying to get to the range weekly, but I got to busy to keep it up. I have been once over the winter and I only hit 3 balls. We took the kids and my back is still flared up so I didn't even take my clubs.

I know that if I am going to improve this year, it will take regular practice. Hopefully soon I will be my own boss and I can make the time to get there.

Do you bring your own mat to the range?

I play at the range 4-5 times per week. I always play one round per week, on Sundays, sometimes two. I play with this schedule, because I don't have enough time to play 5 days a week but I still would like to improve my playing. I would rather play 4-5 rounds every week and hit the range once, maybe in a perfect world.

Range mats have no bad lies and you don't get the crucial feedback of a real divot. It is OK to start out on mats but they instill bad habits in the long run.

good point tm. I take divots almost every shot and mats give me the worst feed back, i always try to hit on grass if i can.

5 or 6 times a week. In the summer sometimes everyday. Before a round its always just to warm up, never to work on my swing. It's a bad mistake to try and work on a swing change right before a round. I hit balls after the round if there is something I need to work on in my swing.

I never just beat balls either. Always have a plan before going to the range, my father taught me that.

    • Day 20: Did 30 minutes after getting home from work, before kid's baseball practice. This session was piecing out the new hip move in transition, doing 2-3 rehearsals from the top, and then hitting a ball from between P5/P6. Did another 45 minutes after baseball practice and dinner. Did 30 more minutes of what I did earlier, and then about 15 minutes of full swings trying to incorporate athletically.
    • Day 296: did a stack session.
    • Day 126: 5/1/24 Putting and chipping practice. Slow motion swings with 8-iron.
    • #4 - 1st hole at Kingsbarns I rolled in a 15 footer for birdie. Showed my caddie an old guy could still play a bit. #3 - 18th hole at Basin Harbor Club, Vergennes, VT. I had played matches against my nephew over the years. He had never beaten me although through the years he had become a long hitting teenage golfer. I was 1 up but bunkered near the 18th green. My nephew had a long putt for birdie. I splashed out of the bunker to 4 feet. He rolled his first putt close and I gave him the par. Sadly for him, I rolled mine in and won our last match. He went off to college and then Europe for a Ph. D. It was our last match. Family champion forever. #2 - First playoff hole in the City of Livonia, MI “65 & Over” division. I rolled in an 8 footer that broke about 4-5 inches. #10 Whispering Willows GC. #1  18th hole at TPC Prestancia, Sarasota, FL. A 4 foot slicing putt for par to beat the prior year’s Member/Guest winners and win the Member/Guest with my father at his club. I was having heart palpitations as I played the final hole solo when my father put two in the water. There was never a better golf sight for me when that ball dove into the hole.
    • Finally, wedges getting somewhere. This one a punch gap from 87 yards to about 12 feet. Contact and ball flight absolute restaurant quality. It's nice when grass comes back.
