There must be some aspect of the golf swing that creates what he feels is ‘natural’ to be commonly difficult. Why? Because what’s seen in new players (errors) is usually not unique. Most people slice. Coming over the top is very common (admittedly I assume this but @iacas could definitely provide input on this.) There must be some general physical reason why so many people have essentially the same fault/s as the next. This to me says some may have natural abilities but for the golf swing it isn’t something teachable as he poorly attempts to do.

My natural golf swing sucks 😂 Swinging a golf club isn't a "natural" motion, from an evolutionary standpoint.

The instructor basically said it all in the video in the first post, he got down to scratch when he was 16, obviously something that rarely happens in golf, he can't relate to the vast majority of golfers. For him those couple of feels with the feet gets him to make a good turn. Doesn't mean it'll happen for everyone.

Not a fan of not looking at the ball. If you're going to train the motion, then train it properly. If your head is up then you're training a different pivot. Yes, everyone (even pros) makes a different swings when the ball is there

One thing I do like is trying to relate the golf motion to a simple or athletic cue. Allowing the positions to "happen" because of the dynamics of the motion. Not saying this guy does that but it's something I'm seeing more with instructors I respect and I think moving in a way that creates some flow or momentum into the backswing is a good thing.

BTW just to illustrate what a golf wacko I am....the way the instructor is describing the body motion seems like it's coming from the Bob McDonald drills from his book "Golf" (1927),

Or Alex Morrison (1940). I guess what I'm getting at is it seems the instructor was on an "old school" kick when he was making the video 😉

I can skip a rock easily, no instruction needed. I can chop wood, chop a tree at its base with ease. Golf requires more precision than any of those activities and some people simply have a better ‘feel’ for it than others.

Yeah this.

It would be nice to arrive at anything resembling the instructor or the student towards the end in the OP with a single cue type method. There are few similar ideas like 'feel the clubhead' or 'swing the handle'.

May be it works for someone as I don't see anything grossly wrong in the OP. But I simply have too many interfering instincts to learn to swing through the ball as if it didn't exist. That in itself is a very unnatural adjustment.

I see all kinds of guys swinging their natural swing on courses around here, and they usually suck! Occasionally you'll find the guy with the goofy grip and the weird swing who can still hit the ball where he wants. This is a guy you don't want to bet with! He's figured out how to make his swing work despite his faults.

I think the idea of a "natural" golf swing comes down to every person having some physical gifts, and building on what they have. Look at the pros, every one of them swings the club differently. You can go from Keegan Bradley, who is so bent over I can't imagine how he can hit the ball, to Bryson DeChambeau!

Yet, they've all figured out how to make it work for them.

I'm very interested to hear some thoughts on this video.

Just an opinion here. I watched it all and tried it a little. I think it shows the importance of finding ways to reduce or eliminate tension in hands, arms, lower body. I noted the instructions to "hold and breathe". Also reduces tension. I just couldn't do everything he recommends. Best, Marv

Above is the video I'm referencing. I challenge everyone to give this a try. Maybe not permanently, but if you're in the ruts, it's a fun drill to just relax and do for a bit. Over the summer my scores have fluctuated so drastically and I've gone from striking my irons really well to not being able to hit the club at all and once I tried this drill it helped loads with my confidence. Let me know what you guys think.

Yes - my thought exactly, haha.

How's that working out for you? Any promise?

It's working out ok for me. My scores are consistently where I think should be. With all the practice, and play, my swing had become my "natural swing", that gets me to a constent impact position on the ball.

Of course not every ball I hit is worth writing home about. However, neither is anyone else's swing, and ball contact. We all miss a little most of the time, and miss alot more times per our talent level.

A great swing is a good thing, as long as it gets the golfer to a playable impact position on the ball.

at 17:30 in the video, he asks the instructor "do you play golf like this?"

The instructor's response is:  "I want to. I'm scared though."

The instructor was referring to not looking at the ball. He’s made it clear that the whole not looking thing is just a drill to train the swing.

No - I don't think he's made it clear at all.

Check out his instagram page. You'll find videos of him actually playing golf with this method.

    • With the H4 or the watch, you tag the club before hitting by putting the tag next to the device. The tag is on the club butt end. After a round, you don’t really think about it too much. You just do it. I don’t know how far you are from @phillyk, but he may know an instructor in your area.
    • So the biggest issue right now is marrying the hands down with an athletic turn. I can get stuck not turning. Things get interesting from there.

    • Hi everybody!  I am new to the golf game. I have taken some lessons and got fitted for clubs a couple of months ago. I usually score between 110-120 for 18 holes.  I bought a Stealth driver last year and have been hitting consistently with it 210-230 yds on the simulator. But when I take it out on the course, every drive is a severe slice!  I played 18 holes yesterday at the club where I belong. I removed the driver from my bag and used the 5 iron to drive with. I hit straight 16 out of 18 drives, 180 - 200 yds. I used the 5i - putter for the rest of my game.  I ended the day with a 92. Question: Does it make sense for me to continue playing with irons only until I get further along in my game before I reintroduce the Driver and woods again? Or should I continue to struggle with the Driver and woods and shoot in the 100’s again? To me it’s a no brainer, but for those more advanced I am interested to get feedback.
    • Thank you, currently I only had the 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons in the bag. I was never finding myself in a situation to use the 4 and 5 so I dropped those a while ago. The 60W is what I've been practicing with the most in the back yard, but that's only with short chipping. I don't think I've ever practiced hitting my wedges at 80% - 100% apart from yesterday. Maybe I should be doing that more. Generally I would be using a 9 iron if I was out about 75 yards or so. I am not really sure I understand your mention of the 60W and 3H. Aren't these going to be giving me completely different results? Unfortunately I am not able to adjust the loft on the hybrids I have. I looked into the Shot Scope H4 you suggested and this seems really neat and handy, however I am struggling to understand how it works. Am I correct in assuming it doesn't track the ball distance until you hit the ball a second time? Say I drive from the tee and walk up to my ball, tag the next club and hit the ball. Is it at this point when I tag my next club while standing next to my ball that is knows the distance? Thank you, I am going to give the local shop a call and check their prices and see what they can offer.
