My goal this year is to finish 9 holes. I have popped in and out the past 3 years while I have been trying to rebuild my swing and stamina after breaking my back, heel and leg several years ago. It's still difficult to play 9 even on a cart once the pain sets in, but I am hoping a little cooler weather will aid in my finishing 9. Thanks to a few of you, my swing has improved and so has my repeatability. I even took my MP33s out of the shed

Get more consistency out of my driver.  The club has been my downfall for far too long.

It is really becoming a huge drag on my game and my excitement level for the game.  It stops me from playing nicer courses because it is a drag looking for your ball in the hazard every couple of holes and just ruins my mood.

Every time I think I am starting to turn the corner I end up right back where I started, pushing it to the right with a high fade or ripping it on a line way to the left.  Just can't seem to get the club face square at impact.

My goal this year, from now till February and start of golf season, is to get to the point where 45, my average now, is just a mediocre score, rather than a good score, which will be 41 or 42. I think, with the new practice schedule I’ve made, that goal is very realistic. Bully this time next year, I want to have 40 as my norm. 10 strokes off my game in 12 months. Going from 90 to 80. That’s the goal. I think with practice, it’ll get done.

Hey mate.  I am no expert by any angle.  Yet this has been my goal for the year, unofficially...but most certainly. I have jumped through considerable hoops to rid my self of this pattern.  I do PRECISELY that same thing.  And it has had the same affect on my game and my perception of the sport as you describe.

This has been a demon for me for so, so long.  I have had it tamed with duct tape for periods of as long as a few weeks, only to see it return with a vengeance. But I have learned a lot and I am cautiously optimistic that the seal will hold this time.  It feels like a weight off that I am peering over my shoulder to make sure it does not sneak back up on me.

If we presume that you are not swinging with a very vertical stroke, you can try what *finally* worked for me.

Lean forward an exaggerated amount on your downswing.  You can tell you are doing it right if it causes you to rise on your front leg.  This has enabled me to strike the ball with the club head on its way forward and outward at the same time.  The “outward” is the key.  The movement starts in your hips. Just be sure you are rotating your hips rather than sliding them or you may not get this result.

To make sure I am not sliding, I prematurely push my weight forward just a bit at the start of the backswing. The net result is that my weight forward downswing ends up with me rising on my front leg.  Try a bucket forcing yourself to do this. What you should get is a predictable result.

Good luck!

...another few months and I can report that I finally broke par at my hone course this weekend.  15 years of playing this course and several 72's in the past year or so, I finally shot a bogey free, two under par 70 on Saturday!

re #1  I gave up on the 3 hybrid I got this year and bought a 5 wood (also on callawaygolfpreowned.com) and crush it.  the 3 didn't seem to go much farther than the 4 hybrid that I love.

re # 3 on my goals for the year-  I shot one of those 72's in the first round of our Club championship.  I was in the final group on Sunday and ... completely fell apart.  shot 85.  I went from one off the lead to losing by 14. We'll get 'em next year!

re #4  i am up to almost 70 rounds for the year.  not bad for a 9-5er.  Not sure how much longer I will last as it is getting rainy and colder up here.

re #6  I have birdied #2 and #12, but now have lost track for sure if I have gotten them all or not.  need to make a check list for next year.

Five five month check in...

#1. Done ...  Club Champion was a neat experience, but if your swing is awful that day, fitting is pretty much a waste of time.  That day I was pulling everything 30 yards dead left.  So no real good info with which I could base new club purchases.  I ended up buying a “new” D,3w and 2 hybrids on  callawaygolfpreowned.com  for less than $600.  The driver is working out great and I am still finding my way with the others.

#2 ... the main reason I am posting tonight...  shot a one under 70 today at a course I’ve never played.  Woohoo!!!

#4. Definitely have gotten a lot of golf in so far this year.  Today was the 25th score I have posted  in three months.  Bandon trip is not happening, but Reno is in 3 weeks!

#5.. still no movement on my weight... still trying to figure out how to drop a little weight and keep it off without going to extremes, but I’m still trying...

#6...  still have only birdied about half of the holes on my home course.

  • 3 weeks later...

A bit late for 2019...but my  goals this year were:

1) Play a round without losing a ball (zero penalty strokes from OB/penalty area)...still working on it.

2) Break 90...DONE!

To accomplish these goals, I started full swing lessons at the end of last year (average about 1 lesson per month), and I try to practice at least a little bit every day. Biggest issue with my game is the full swing, so this is my primary focus when practicing. I work on what my instructor tells me to focus on. I have a net and mat in my yard so I can do full swing practice, but I don't have the ball flight visual which makes it hard to tell if I'm progressing (I can gauge my progress on the course though). So far this year has been the most rewarding year of golf for me in 20 years playing.
