There's the Bear Trap, doesn't this course have some nickname for a stretch of holes? I can't remember. I think Akshay Bhatia, number one ranked junior for a long time, is playing.

And the amateur's goal is "to win."

Still a long way to go obviously, but he's off to a great start on his first hole in a PGA Tour tournament.

I went today. It was my first ever PGA tourney. I live about 45 minutes from the course and have never been. I was able to witness Knox's albatross. The shot at least. No one could really see the pin. Not even him.

Nice! So how was your first time? I always like seeing these guys hit in person. It’s just something to see how pure they hit the ball. Weather looked perfect. Thanks for posting!

I live about five minutes from course. I usually go every year but I’m not going this year. Last year was pretty cool to see Tiger Woods up close.

It was pretty great! I was in awe with the whole thing. The size of the course, the distance they hit the ball, and even the hills ha! I want to kick myself for not going sooner. The weather was perfect too.

Wow! Nice to live that close. I can actually take Belcher from it's southern most point. I didn't buy parking ahead of time so we didn't know exactly where to park. I ended up parking at Bentley Elementary School and we took the shuttle. It really wasn't bad. 10 bus ride to and from.

Akshay Bhatia is -3 through 7 holes today. 1 shot inside the cut line right now. IMO that's pretty impressive from a 17 year old even if he doesnt end up making the cut.

I just saw Luke Donald’s shirt...I had a little animal head on it. Whose he sponsored by at the moment?

Im surprised he never made his way back up the OWGR. Did the distance monsters take over that much...or did he change?

Uh, didn't Palmer, Nicklaus, Woods and many others start out as amateurs with big dreams?

I was pulling hard for Jason Kokrak today. He grew up locally and played HS golf at Warren JFK. He's been on Tour for 8 years and makes a nice living, but he's never won. I think today was the closest he might have come. Even the guys in the booth seemed surprised that he hasn't broken through.

A lot more, thousands haven’t and won’t achieve a Nicklaus, Palmer or Woods status. I’m saying I didn’t see anything unusual other than him expressing his intent to win the Valspar.

I too was pulling for Kokrak. He needs a win. I like his radio show too.

A 17 year old who can drive it 340+ yds and be within a couple shots of making the cut at his first PGA tournament is pretty unusual IMO.

    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
