Lefties get no respect...

Thread Starter
Playing golf and being a lefty is really difficult. I'm not really talking about playing the game but rather the lack of respect we get from manufactures and especially retailers. I just came back from my local Golfsmith store and the choices for lefties was dismal. Two long aisles of wedges — all righties with a few token left handed wedges in the corner. A really nice test putting area surrounded by just about every putter made, except they are all right handed with just a small handful of lefty putters to try. You see those long wall displays of club sets? Go ahead, try and find a left-handed one. Want a golf glove as a lefty? Good luck. Again, racks of gloves, all different brands and models but what's available for lefties is pitiful. Ever see that custom fitting Ping rack of clubs? Take a close look next time, all the clubs are for right handed hitters with just a few lefties. When you ask why so few for lefties they say that's all you need. All you need???? Why have so many for righties then? And then there are the sales... Most stores have sales for in-store equipment and since they don't carry much lefty gear, it's almost impossible to find anything on sale. Sorry, just full retail for lefties.

I know, one of you will say that you can order just about anything you want as a lefty but besides not really being true, I want to be able to touch and feel a club before buying. I want to take test putts with a variety of putters. I want a little respect as a lefty! Hey, maybe I should try a class action lawsuit under the American Disabilities Act to force retailers to support lefties!

Sorry for the rant. If your a lefty you'll understand. If your a righty you'll just shrug your shoulders like all the clerks in the stores and say "What's the big deal"

Re: Lefties get no respect...

suck it up, pay more and take the crap...you're a lefty. there might be all of 4 ppl who even read this simply bc it said lefty in the heading...all others were probably like "lol who wants to read about lefties?"

i'm only kidding.

i did notice that when i was shopping for clubs, because my dad is a lefty (hasn't changed his clubs b/c as you've noticed nothing to try; nothing to buy). wish you luck man, best thing i can say is try to hit up a demo day or ten to get fit and try to wrangle a deal there. wish you luck

Re: Lefties get no respect...

My buddy is a lefty and you are absolutely correct. Lefties get shafted. Luckily here in Canada, not only do we have one of the highest number of golfers per capata in the world, we also have the highest amount of, per capata, left handed golfers. The reason for this is solely squared on hockey. Many hockey players who play golf here in canada swing the club left! So luckily, golf stores here don't disrespect lefties as much as they do in the states.

Quick solution - move to Canada...lol kidding.

Just take the frustration out on your game!

Re: Lefties get no respect...

The main problem is that most of golfer are rightees, and companies focus on their main market, that is why left equipment are more expensive due to the lower demand.
As Derryck said, just take your frustration in the game ;)

Cheers

Re: Lefties get no respect...

On Ebay this is reversed. Leaft handed gear is way cheaper than the same stuff in righty.

Re: Lefties get no respect...

I like being left handed. We are blessed with the best short games.

Re: Lefties get no respect...

Yeah, the flip side is that I normally see a ton of great buys for lefty gear.

But yeah, you guys get shafted for the most part (see what I did there..."shafted"... golf forum...comedy gold! =) )

Re: Lefties get no respect...

It sucks, but I don't see it changing. I think 90% of the world is righty, so if you were a manufacturer what would you do? It just makes more monetary sense to make mainly righty stuff.

Maybe you should invent adjustable irons where the lie angle can move 180 degrees flat to flat. I'm not sure if they'd need to be centre shafted!?!?

Re: Lefties get no respect...

Its weird, with the percentage of golfers who are lefty's, we have 3 out of 4 in our group. And we just golf together cause we are work buddies. I was pretty excited to find out I was a righty putter cause that just opened up the selection door and I was in heaven shopping for my putter. Oh and my wife is also a lefty so it is gonna suck getting her fitted for her new set.

Re: Lefties get no respect...

I agree it does stink but actually my golf galaxy carries a decent selection for lefties. They have a lot of lefty wedges, woods, and putters but the iron selection is pathetic. Best advice is to keep an eye for demo days around you that will give you the opportunity to hit whatever you want to hit.

Re: Lefties get no respect...

I don't see what the problem is. Righties greatly outnumber lefties therefore the manufacturers are going to favor righties.

If I was a lefty I'd definitely be pretty mad but the manufacturures are going to do what is going to make them the most profit.

Re: Lefties get no respect...

I agree they do what's good for business and I don't blame them at all. I mean a lefty can still find what they want it's just not as easy as going to a local retail store and buying it.

Re: Lefties get no respect...

The pro shops at both the clubs I go to have lefty demo's.

But as was mentioned, a lot of hockey players shoot left, and a lot of hockey players golf, so they shoot left in golf too.

Re: Lefties get no respect...

It is a bitch and a half to get Lefty gear. I hate trying to find a particular model of putter and having to drive to 4 different stores to track it down.

Re: Lefties get no respect...

Ha ha. I love it how some of the right-handed players on this forum say, "Hey. What's the problem? There's not many of you. Suck it up."

I can tell you as a lefty, it's incredibly difficult to get clubs. You go to a store (I know: who goes to a store?! Certainly, I don't, but humour me.) -- you'll get nothing. Okay, nothing but some five year old no-name irons stashed in the corner; you go to a demo day -- you'll be lucky if there's anything there to hit, let alone anything by way of different shafts / lofts; you finally start looking online -- sure, there's more there, but you can't try the clubs out first and you have to wait months for them to arrive. And then you discover that most manufacturers don't even bother to offer their lineups to lefties.

You can't tell me it makes no difference in the end: for example, look at the different options in finish and bounce (more importantly) in Vokey wedges for right-handed players and then look at the lefty range -- the lack, or absence, of options can actually make a real difference to a decent lefty's game.

[Given that I made that comment about Vokeys, in fairness, I should add: Titleist are actually pretty good for lefties -- I think it offers its entire iron range in both hands. Mizuno, however, have really annoyed me lately.]

Have I tried the MP-58s or the MP-62s? Yeah, I tried them. But I found that I lost about 80 per cent of my usual distance.

Re: Lefties get no respect...

I'm left handed and I'm also part of the problem. I took up the game of golf at age 7 playing right handed and never even saw a left handed club until I was 12. I think there are a lot of natural left handers that play right handed and that cuts the demand for left handed clubs even further.

I'm in that group. I forced myself to golf right handed for a couple of reasons, one being that I knew that finding the right equipment for a righty is much easier. (I didn't get serious about golf until about age 20)

However, I putt my natural way. So, I had to deal w/ finding the LH putter, and all of that good stuff. It was a pain in the a*s.
