Brutal Round, how to stop

Just had a brutal round. Hard time off the tee, dont know wtf was going wrong.Thats not even the problem The secondary shots where fine. Problem was I was so frustrated with losing balls. I mean it would be just on the first cut of rough see them land but just cant find them. After the 3rd time it happened it went down hill from there.

That just sounds like bad luck. When I have a bad day, I pick one club that I am hitting well and try to play the whole hole with it. If your hitting a 7 or 6 well, why not take the extra shot than worry about hitting a driver or 3 wood OB? Just something to think about.

Not a bad idea. I said to my self I was going to put the driver away but I just never did.

I think we all run into that. We know that the driver isn't working but we just keep hitting it in the hope that we can turn it around. I've found that my 2 biggest problems on the course are, keeping the driver in play & wasted chip shots. I find that those 2 things cost me an average of 10 shots a round.

I had horrible rounds last week. It sucks when you're hitting it bad and you feel like you don't know why. I do 2 things to try and help me minimize the carnage. Firstly, as has been said, club down. When I'm hitting it really bad I'll hit nothing bigger than a 5 iron - even on par 5's.

The other one is don't look away in disgust when you hit a bad shot. It's hard to do but force yourself to watch that sucker fly into the trees or wherever and get a visual landmark in your head before you start walking (ie . . it's just past the 3rd big tree on right, etc). Half the balls I lose are because I look away in disgust - usually right after the first bounce or so. Force yourself to watch it until it stops.

Looks like a lot of good advice here. I would add one thing, slow down. Not necessarily you swing but just make sure you are doing the pre-shot routine and have a target in mind before you swing. Also important to keep your head up when you walk and not get mechanical when you swing.

I usually run into to problems like that when I am distracted. (One of my friends loves to not STFU as I am going through my preshot routine and always wonders why I play poorly with him).

My solution is to focus, focus, calm down, and focus! Try to think about how nice the course looks or how the air feels, relax and then approach your shot with a zenlike focus. If you still cant calm down and start hitting it straight crack a few beers and have fun hacking it up for the round. Just dont get so frustrated that you dont want to be there anymore because thats when everything really goes bad.

I stop trying and take my medicine. I've been playing long enough to know that once the landslide starts the worst thing to do is get all tense and angry. Dramatically lowering your expectations can help. If you are hitting like crap don't try to aim even tighter to the pin or try to hit the 290 yard drive to make up for the triple on the last hole. Take the little victories (a GIR or a 1 putt) and build off it.

Anytime I am playing and something is going way wrong, I just stop what I am doing wrong and do something different. If I can't hit the driver well, I'll start teeing off with a 3-wood or 4-iron. If I am struggling with full iron shots, I will club up and hit easy shots.

By doing something different, you have to refocus and think a little about what you are doing rather than just the same thing (which obviously is bad). After a while, it will all come back.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

A lesson pro from many years ago told me every golfer needs a failsafe shot which will work in all conditions.

If I go wild, I pull out the 5 iron and hit a little draw off the tee. My brother hits a low, punch 3 iron. Around the green I would hit a chip and run of some sort rather than a pitch shot - go with the basics.

Then, when I start making contact again, I'll try a return to normal mode. My progress the last two seasons has been limiting the blowups to a couple of holes in a row, then getting things back on target.

when i am playing with B and C grade golfers and things aren't going my way, like a bogie or even 2 bogies in a row, i will fore-go the Honour at the tee box and concentrate on placement in the fairway of that next tee shot..

always give way to the Greenskeeper!!

This was my round today. I ended up leaving after 13 holes, wasn't worth dealing with the slow pace that for some reason was happening ahead of us, the heat, and my crappy swing. I think I played 2 holes somewhat decently. Usually, if my driver is failing, I can go to my 5 iron to just get it in play but I couldn't even hit that today. I actually ended up hitting a lot of punch shots just to get around the course. I focused on just getting bogeys, so getting on in 3 on a par 4 or 4 on a par 5 was ok. Problem was I couldn't get my wedges on target, either hahahaha!

It sucks man, I'm right there with you. When those days come around it's a sickening feeling, especially if your immediate round before it was pretty good. I'm with one of the previous posters that said to just scale back your expectations and simplify the game. Take some 6 or 7 irons and punch those suckers down the fairway. Most par 4s I play are around 355-390 so two punch 6 irons puts me within a nice, easy 15-20 yard shot for my 3rd. We make the game much harder than it is, and it's funny to realize this when you start simplifying your strategy.

I had a day like that two days ago, I ended up with a 103. I havent shot in the 100's in quite a while, after the first hole I put away the driver and used the 3 wood, which I kept in regulation 60-70 percent the rest of the day. Then after 3 holes I was doing something to hit the ball directly right with my irons. Even wedges. I don't think I was hitting the ball with the hozzel, but really I don't know. I could hit my 3 wood and hybrid but that was it. What a horrible day! I've completely lost my swing, including the driver- which was my one strength on the course. Now I think it's time for a lesson.

I'm also thinking of getting rid of the str8 fit VR driver. There seems to be no feel when I hit the shot, and I can't hit it on line. Since I hit the burner 3w so well I may just go with that.
