Here I go again stepping right in the poop.  Iacacas is going to really tear me up.  I am so stressed.

Just listed to Nick Faldo's narrative about Tiger Woods problem with putting. (Iacacas said it was ok), problems with wedges.  And trying different "things" on the course instead of the range.

Listening to many of your writings, Faldo is without the "sandtrap" expertise truth in knowledge also.

Totally agree. I don't even know if Faldo even played the game! LOL You'd think that they'd find someone who knew what he was talking about. Problem is that he most probably plays off 25 and can't possibly know anything beyond what the average Sandtrapper does. There must be someone out there, hopefully an ex player who can not only analyse a swing, but give insights on the game. Pretty sure I heard him call a 3 wood a "3 metal" the other day.

Nah - he's just a guy they dragged off the street. I don't think he was a player at all. Certainly never won anything of note that I'm aware of.

One of the dumbers thread titles I've ever seen on this forum, which is saying something.  A subject unworthy of serious debate.

The only sensible word in the OP was "listed" .... Perhaps the post was made from the 19th.

Nah, Faldo and Miller might be obnoxious pricks, but they know something about the game. They have overly large egos but don't go as far as to attack current players. Whether they know anything about Tiger or have any insight into his thoughts is another story. McCord is a clown who just says whatever comes to mind, and Feherty is funny but about half the time ought not to say anything. That goes for all of them, really. But Chamblee really has no credibility and has a bad attitude regarding Tiger.

BTW, I do think it's annoying when they use the term "fairway metal"... As if to remind you they played so well without all that technology that makes the game so easy...

Being slightly obnoxious at times, and willfully so, is an English trait that I have long admired but never been able to properly emulate.  Like many excellent and effective drugs, it must be used at just the right dose and for just the right period of time.

Only experts should attempt it - best to leave it to those with a millenium-long tradition.

p.s. there should always be an an accompanying and leavening dose of self-effacing humor - something often lacking with the wannabe's.

Nah, Faldo isn't being witty. Feherty is more witty than Faldo. Faldo could be replaced by anyone with a condescending smirk who says "I told you so" all the time when someone makes a mistake. He has an okay sense of humor but too much smugness and, as you said, he's not willing to self-deprecate. He does give players credit when they hit a good shot, but isn't willing to besmirch his memories of how he played; i.e. he never made the mistakes the current players did and the contemporary players aren't as good as his own opponents because in those days they didn't use metal drivers. (Which of course hit the ball 8 yards further each year and require no skill whatsoever to hit.)

I'd like to see Stephen Fry or John Cleese do the color commentary instead of McCord. That would be interesting to say the least.

Uhm, I don't remember saying either of those things (if I did, it certainly wasn't after some recent tournaments), but okay. Whatever floats your boat man.

One thing Faldo knows that Chamblee doesn't:  what it feel like to win a major.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

U guys talkin' bout SIR Nick Faldo?  He knelt before the Queen; honored for bringing back to England the golfing glory so deserved.  In the UK lands, and Commonwealth in general, He is always Sir Nick. When he comes to USA, he shrinks back to Mr. Nick, thus he feels bummed out and annoys us all with his chatter.

Nick doesn't obey the ball flight laws so he is out on credibility

"My ball is on top of a rock in the hazard, do I get some sort of relief?"

Oh, right!

Sorry. That makes sense now. After all, I've got two functioning eyeballs and I'm capable of using 'em.

Lucius,
John Cleese doing the commentary - what a wonderful notion!

Yes, Sir Nick can be smug and certainly Feherty is the wittier, no doubt.  But you gots to forgive Faldo to some extent.  He has received the undying gratitude of the British public, desperate as they were in the 60s and 70s (as I well remember) for someone other than a consistent loser.  They finally got their man in the 80s - someone who didn't choke and even seemed to relish the big moments.  That sort of thing has to get to your head to some extent.  He would probably acknowledge it after knocking back a few pints at the local pub.

Valley: next time I walk past Nick at Torrey Pines, probably on his way to the bar after finishing his commentary, I'll try to explain to him the relationship between clubface angle, initial direction of flight, spin and trajectory.  I'll offer to buy him a pint to help him appreciate the enormity of his error ....

    • You need to stick with one instructor as long as they’re not terrible. There’s no blueprint to improving a golf swing and different instructors may see different things as being more important and try to fix them. The end result is you get a hodge podge of things to work in that may not be cohesive or necessarily help you. If you stick to one instructor and communicate to them as such, they’ll also be able to work out a roadmap to your improvement which is more beneficial in the long run. If a guy assumes you’re just coming in for one lesson you might end up with a band aid.

    • Many thanks.  I read a lot of those posts.   Man, that is really deep.  As an old beginner, during a lesson or on the driving range, I have hit a good shot, you know pretty straight and it goes say 130 yards (7 iron).  The very next swing, I dig a ditch behind the ball.  I know I didn't do the same things on both swings.  Even this last lesson I had, I would hit a pretty good shot, not so on the next shot.  The instructor would quickly point out, "Hey you stayed on your back foot" or "Guess what happened there.  You got all armsy or handsy".  Sort of feels like I need a checklist when I prepare to swing each time.  I can see it now before every swing, "Hey can you guys give me 10 minutes while I run through my checklist".  In all seriousness, I see what you all are saying.  I wouldn't be overthinking it so much if just I could make decent contact most of the time.  Next lesson is about two weeks away.  Can't wait.

    • I was going to link in the same think @snapfade did.  Your swing is already consistent, repeatable, except for nearly "microscopic" differences.  The more mechanically-sound your swing becomes, the smaller and less frequent those "microscopic" deviations become.
