I've been shooting ok but not great lately, usually around my handicap.  Yesterday was day 1 of the club's senior championship and I had a total meltdown, for no obvious reason.  Poor shots, stupid shots, bad club selection.  I'm trying to figure out if I have the mental fortitude to get back to my normal game after a round like that.  I'm in the middle of the pack so I wasn't the only one but it sure is frustrating and disappointing.  I guess I just have to 'get back on the horse' and try to play my game.

Any other suggestions?  Drink heavily?

Tee time in 2 hours.

You are in the middle of the pack so just focus on playing your normal game today- take it one shot at a time and don't put extra pressure on yourself.  Understand that even the pros hit a handful of bad shots most rounds, so just move onto the next shot when you do.

No expectations, this is a game of recovery from poor shots and managing your game.

Stay in the shot, not the score - the past does not matter, the future does not matter, it is the now that matters.

You guys nailed it - now, if I can just pull it off.  A lot of it will depend on with whom I am paired, although it shouldn't.  I have to block them out and focus on me.

Off to the range for warm up.

Thanks for the advice.

Even worse on day one of a 4 day tournament.  Been there, done that, with the same handicap you have right now.  Actually played myself out of the tournament in the first 7 holes (already 16 over par), despite shooting in the 70's on days 3 and 4.

Shooting around your handicap is pretty good and, if you can do it two days in a row, that should garner a very good result.

I picked up some spending money in the daily pots that second weekend, but was finished as far as placing in the tournament.  That was the 1991 Club Championship.  By far my worst opening performance in any tournament I ever played in (first weekend was 103-88 with a 10 handicap).  The 74-79 the second weekend got me out of the cellar in my flight, but I never had a chance at placing in the money for the overall tournament.

The second day was better than the first.  First day, poor ball striking, ok putting.  Second day, good striking, couldn't putt.  Improved by 10 strokes, finished in the top half but not on top.  Oh well, the guys who shot their handicap both days won their respective flights.

You guys gave me great advice - thanks.  It definitely helped me drop the 10 strokes.

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • Hence your Avatar!😜 I drink a lot of water during the day if I’m playing or exercising. I get cramps otherwise.
    • If you walk up to a food/drink kiosk at Magic Kingdom and ask the person for a cup of "magic water" they will give you a small cup of Sprite for free. About 3 fingers worth. They don't sell alcohol at MK anymore so I go over to one of the courses while she hangs out there.
    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
