What's your practice routine?

Curious to hear how everyone approaches practice.  I still find myself falling into the same "warm up with SW, hit some full pitching wedges, work through to driver, than hit way too many balls in too short of a time with randomly selected clubs" routine.  

 

Assume 1-1.5 hrs, including full swing, short game, and putting.  Not looking so much at how much time dedicated to each, but rather what clubs hit, how many balls, how frequently you hit a shot, etc. etc.

I find a net is the best way for me to practice. That big ol' bucket of balls and a wide open range is just too hard to resist. So I hit into a net using 3-5 balls and film/review pretty much every swing. Slows me down, keeps me mindful and also keeps me process oriented.

I also rarely practice more than 30 minutes at a time. Practice often but in short, focused sessions.

Start with stretches, then half swings with left arm only, weight forward drills, then slow swings working on takeaway.

20-30 swings with gap wadge and 8.

Then I go right to driver, I like driver when I have energy, waiting until the end is bad IMO.

I swing a few drivers to warm up and then play holes, pick targets and go driver, wood/hybrid/long iron, wedge, if I make a bad shot I keep hitting the club until I do well, then start over, I try not to hit any club too many times in a row though, if I have trouble I move on, start over.

I'll usually hit a minimum of 125 balls, usually much more, my last time out I hit 275.

After stretching for a few minutes, I will hit up to a dozen easy wedges and then a few full 9 irons.  I then do right to the Driver for a couple of dozen while I am fresh.  The rest of the time is spent going through the clubs and spending extra time with the clubs that are giving me trouble (ok, the ones that I am not swinging well).

I'm trying to avoid slipping into a routine. Instead I try to focus each practice session on whatever it is I'm making a priority, and that will be different on different days. In particular, I'm trying to stay away from hitting the same club repeatedly. Today I was concentrating on swing path and going up and down the bag, hitting driver, five-wood, 7-iron and wedge in pretty much random order. I find it helps me to concentrate on setting up correctly every time if I avoid hitting the same club for successive shots.

Lately I've been working around the green.   I'm chipping 6 balls to each of the practice green holes and then putting each from that chip.  I'm making a game of it and trying to conclude that up and down (1 chip, 1 putt) is par.  I'm working with my sand wedge, gap, pitching and 9 iron.   I'm learning quite a bit about how each works around the green since I have to putt each chip.  The short game has always been my downfall (until recently).   There are times I'll have almost as many chips as putts.    I'm spending more time working with this than with full shots.  Believe me, I need the practice on the entire game but I believe the separation value for me is as high as driving and approach shots.

 

When I do practice full shots, I have to learn to practice.   I usually don't.   I will pretend that I'm playing the course and start with a driver and depending upon the shot, select what I believe to be the correct club to get to the green.

I do dynamic stretches - same ones I do before I play.

 

Hit some partial shots to warm up.

 

If I'm going to play the next day, I usually go through the bag on every other club. Pay attention to set up and alignment, and smooth tempo on driver.

 

If it's just practice, I will usually have an emphasis: long clubs, irons, wedges, or greenside short game. If it's long clubs, I'll hit the driver first after warming up - a pro told me that the driver is the most physically demanding club to hit, so do it before you get tired.

 

I often practice for a half hour or less - course is along the way home from work. If I lose my attention span and just beat balls, it doesn't help much.

I've answered this question before, and I should go try and find it and see if it's changed much.  Currently its:

 

Stretch a bit (and I stress "a bit" because its basically arms over my head on each end of the club, then to the side a bit, and done)

A few 40-50 yard pitches

A few full SW shots at the 100 pole.

Then either 6 iron or 7 iron for about 20 balls with whatever drill/swing thought I'm working on.

Then 8-10 drivers with the same drill/swing thought

Then a handful of PW or 9 irons at the 150 pole.

Then whatever I feel like with the remainder of the balls.  Sometimes more pitches.  Sometimes some 8 irons.  Sometimes some "trouble" shots, or some hybrids or 3 woods.

I also usually try to peg the 50 yard pole with a few 4 irons too, just for fun.

Then grab some Taco Bell or Carl's Jr. and head back to the office.

My practice routine is golfing. If there is no one behind me, I might hit a few extra balls. If I'm at the range, I hit a few irons, some drives, etc. just to keep things fresh, but I'll spend a lot more time by the practice green chipping and working on sand shots.

Rarely hit balls.. The course I play at has a 120 yard pitching green so I just practice wedges from 120 and in from this distance and bunkers.  Then practice a lot of putting.

First off I live 60+/- miles from the nearest practice facility, so I have to make do with what's available. In this picture is my practice range. It's good for full shots, off a mat, up to 200 yards. My regimen is to hit the ball, using various clubs, between the two palm trees, and land it in the turn around area, which is my make shift green. In the picture I hit from left to right. Other times I practice working the ball around those palm trees, and hit the make shift green area. The clear area to left of the picture is my chipping, pitching area. Near by, but not pictured is an area of blow sand for bunker practice. The only thing I can't do is practice my putting.

A man gotta do what a man gotta do................:dance: Yes I find an occasional rattle snake when retrieving balls.

  That is awesome patch & makes me wanna quit bitchin ( I wont obv) about not having a decent range near me as the only good ones are half hour away

 

 I don't really have a regimen but need to get one. I need to stretch a lot more as I am now in 40's and I never stretch.  My usual is hit a few half shots with SW and move to PW and so forth. The ony thing that I constantly do is hit 3 solid shots with whatever club I am going to use to start my round, be it a 3w or Driver.  

 

 I am also working on a pre-shot routine so well see what, if any diff it makes

My routine has changed a bit as of recently but in general here it is:

 

-Stretch

-few PW

-few 8i

-few 7i

-few 4/5i

-few Hybrid

-few 5 wood

-few Driver

 

then I usually try an hit some shaped shots

-5 wood cuts

-whatever I can with the Driver

-work on a few draws with like a 6 or 7

 

then I go an do wedge work with SW

 

The range I go to has a decent pitching area and while you pay per bucket, you are able to retrieve your SW shots from the pitching area. So I usually hit from shots from the sand and go retrieve them then take those 20-30 or so balls and re-hit them with whatever club I feel like again on the actual range or whatever club I feel that needs the most work.

My practice routine on the range:

  • Stretch

  • Place club or directional stick on the ground for alignment

  • Start with sand wedge and hit 3-4 balls with each club, changing the alignment point occasionally

  • After hitting the driver, finish the session hitting 8-10 balls with a lob wedge to a variety of distances

 

Alternative routine on the range:

  • Play your favorite course by using imagery

  • The first shot you hit would be tee shot on the first hole (assume the hole is a par 4)

  • The next club you hit would be your normal approach to the first green, select a target on the range as the green

  • If you miss the target used as a green, hit a pitch or chip shot to a target near your practice tee

  • Continue until you play your favorite 18 (or 9) hole course

 

My practice routine at a short game area:

  • Start with sand or lob wedge shots around the green that have minimal roll

  • Next, hit bump and run shots from various distances

  • Conclude session with a number of bunker shots

 

My practice routine on the green:

  • Do circle drill, where there are 6 balls in a circle around the hole, starting at 2 feet and progressing back to 5 feet

  • Do line drill, placing six ball on a straight line to the hole, beginning at 2 feet and each subsequent ball placed two feet farther away

  • Hit putts 10-20 feet

  • Finish session with lag putts 20+ feet

Nice!  I guess you can practice sand shots at any time.
