I never realized how extreme Ryan's transitional move is. He almost looks like Furyk on the backswing and then he loops the hell out the club to flatten out. Hard to believe he can even hit the ball like that, so chaotic looking. I assume that creates an extreme inside out swing and I'm guessing he usually misses way right with a block?

Pfff… Come on, EJ. This thread needs some DTL Ryan Moore swings.

Alright, how about a different view too:

Doesn't this guy play pull fades with driver too? I think he does.

Thanks @JetFan1983 I'm at the kids' piano lessons when I started the thread so I couldn't add video or pictures. Never really paid much attention to Moore but happened to catch some swings yesterday and was surprised by the...oddness...

Totally agree Jason and I've always wondered the same thing. It appears as though that loop would cause him to have to go so much further and have so many extra movements that he's asking for trouble. It obviously works for him though.

Seems like we were all thinking the same thing... I noticed it these last two days (never really remember seeing him play before this year's Masters). I wondered if he struggled with getting laid off at one point, so he developed his takeaway and back swing, but then transitions back into more of where his downswing would have been when he was laid off? Otherwise he'd find himself coming over the top? I'm certainly no swing expert though... Just basing my 2 cents on personal experience

I've recently added a loop like this in my swing and have found it has helped my ball striking a ton. It is much much better to go from a steep backswing to a shallow downswing than the opposite of that. Here's Chris Como with why it works...

Me, too. I need to get less deep in the backswing, so I use the feeling of being too steep in the backswing.

I'm really curious how much of this type of loop is too much. I see Furyk and Moore having success with a ton of it and that really makes me wonder. So far the more loop I put into my swing the better I hit it.

Yeah, until you add too much. You know what I'm saying… :)

@iacas

What happens when you add too much, overdraws? (Path to much out?)

Yes. Plus fat/thin contact if the clubhead gets coming in too shallow/around.

Feel isn't real as they say.  My swing feels like I have that kind of loop, but on film it doesn't.  He has the 5 Simple Keys down pretty much, so it works for his body.

I may experiment with the loopy feel, definitely don't want to "look" like Moore, but I could use some flattening from A4 to A6 because even when I'm hitting the ball well I always tip out a little bit. I have shied away from any loopy concepts/feels because I ****ed my swing up trying that route in the past but I think I better understand the potential pitfalls to watch out for. The other day I set up with a second ball about 8" forward and 6" outside the target line of my ball and tried to hit both balls. Felt super weird and I thought I had hit a mega shank, very hard to evaluate ball flight as I assumed there was some collision factors and general chaos and it just felt too weird so I didn't do it again. I felt a very pronounced horizontally looped action right at transition, almost like swinging a bat. Thing is, when I reviewed my videos of the session later, that was a beautiful swing on video and it was quite clear at 120fps that the first ball was a perfect (!!!!) push draw and the second ball was hit with the toe on the follow through, no collision despite what I "thought" I had felt. I haven't had an opportunity to hit the range since but after reading this thread and seeing with my own eyes how damn near perfect my A4-A6 was on that swing, I'm thinking I'll be hitting a lot of two ball drills this season.

EJ, I am only commenting because I follow Ryan Moore because his "crouched" setup is similar to mine. I suggest you get some lessons from a pro instructor that you feel comfortable with and will listen to you. I have tried to mimic many pro swings and found that the instruction from a pro ,(combined with me grooving my swing using a SkyPro), helped me reduce my handicap to single digits. Body types are different so the pro will hopefully teach you the easiest swing for your body type. Hopefully your pro will use video and match you up with a pro golfer with a similar stance with swing mechanics that you can reproduce with practice. Good Luck.

Push fades, like Couples. Look at where he aims he body at 1.

Why do pros play these shots? Seems like something they should be able to fix?

    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.

    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
