Jenkins isn't making any sense. Even if a guy like Bob May finishes runner-up, Tiger still beat name players because they were in the field. Sergio, Phil, Furyk, Vijay, Adam Scott, Davis Love, Ernie, Lee Westwood, Duval, Graeme McDowell, Padraig.

http://www.geoffshackelford.com/homepage/2015/5/20/dan-jenkins-on-tiger-beating-nobodies.html

Quote:

From the Q&A;, talking about Jordan Spieth:

Incidentally, there’s much more talent at the top (and the bottom) than there was during Tiger’s peak years. Tiger beat a lot of nobodies to win most of his majors.

Yeah, there was Phil [Mickelson] and [Ernie] Els around, in and out, but go back and look who was second to him in those majors and tell me where they are now.

Did we take Tiger Woods’ dominance for granted, and will he catch Jack Nicklaus’ record for majors?

I never took Tiger’s dominance for granted. The media loved him because he was golf’s only rock star, only dynasty, and people like dynasties in any sport. People also like to see dynasties crash and burn. Every golfer hits a wall eventually. Tiger has hit his, in more ways than one. He’s lost his game and putting stroke and his head. It happens. And I’ve only seen one player lose it all and come back. That was [Ben] Hogan, who damn near died in the car wreck. He came back and won six more majors. Tiger seems more confused about it than anyone I’ve ever covered. Maybe that’s partly because it came so easy for him in the beginning....

Shackelford added

Quote:
And this is where I would differ from Dan: the course and setup means as much as the competition. Tiger won at an Augusta National seemingly rigged to stop him from winning annually. He won at a Torrey Pines playing much firmer and faster than he was used to (and which Phil Mickelson has struggled on post-redo). And he won at the Old Course against some pretty stout leaderboards.

All I've heard is that Tiger did not grant Jenkins a one on one interview several years ago, and it's been sour grapes ever since...

I just ignore any pieces that are basically complaints or negativity regarding Woods. Saves a lot of time.

This is all I've ever heard too.

His comments are lacking in logic, especially given that this was someone who covered golf since the days of the pharaohs .

The current situation of players Tiger beat in his prime has nothing to the quality of competition they offered back then. Situations happen that may have knocked them off their game. Are we to say David Duval was a terrible player in those days because he's no longer making it on tour?

Just seems like another piece where you insert Wood's name to get some attention.

I'm not going to click the article and give him a view, but it sounds like Dan Jenkins said something so monumentally stupid that even Geoff Shackelford could come across as reasonable and/or intelligent in response. That's not easy to do. A sampling of runners up from Tiger's major victories: Tom Kite, Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els (twice in 2000), Miguel Angel Jimenez, David Duval, Phil Mickelson, Retief Goosen, Colin Montgomerie A sampling of runners up from Tiger's WGC victories: Phil Mickelson, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Justin Leonard, Jim Furyk, Retief Goosen, David Toms, Vijay Singh, Stuart Appleby, John Daly, Stewart Cink, Adam Scott, Ian Poulter, Steve Stricker, Keegan Bradley, Henrik Stenson

I think the old man is confused.  Tiger came back twice (in my count) to win lot of tournaments.  The third comeback is unlikely.

As for Tiger beating nobodies in his peak days, that's a bit harsh.  Conversely, there have been no dominant player since Tiger's peak years and anybody (even a nobody) has a good shot at winning a major.

Jacks competition made tigers look like HS players. Tiger is washed up now. Rory is the "next Jack".

Yeah all those club pros were tough competition for Jack ;-)

All weak players....... Jack had to beat multi opponents that have multi major wins

It may be true, the competition is stiffer now, better players, maybe... but we have Tiger to thank for that.

I'm not sure why it matters though, does this make Tiger lesser? nope, so why say it?

Jack has acknowledged that the overall competition Tiger faced was tougher than what he faced.

Maybe Dan Jenkins' articles get published because there aren't any good writers around willing to write about golf...

Dan Jenkins has less credibility than half the posters on this site..........his opinion is worthless right now and, quite frankly, I haven't read a "decent" Dan Jenkins article in years...

All that said........"Dead Solid Perfect" was a great read

    • Day 5- Slow,  short swings with short practice club.
    • Lemme guess….’ We don’t want any confrontation so nobody says anything.’ Sheesh…..Call him out and fix the problem.
    • Went to a PING fitting day today. Going to be ordering a G430 Max 3w with a 75g x-stiff shaft at 5w length and a 3h. I forget what my fitter did with the shaft on that but she told me she’s going to email the club the specs of everything. The 3w combination we found pretty quickly. As for the hybrid, we tried a bunch of different head and shaft combinations for that distance with mixed results. Then she handed me the 3h and I took three swings with it and knew it was the one.
    • Yeah, this isn't sandbagging. It's outright cheating. He should be banned.
    • That’s quite a generalization. It’s clear that you don’t like water but there are plenty of us that drink it just fine. My daily intake is usually about 20oz of black coffee, 16oz of soda, 8oz of milk mixed into a protein shake, and anywhere between 30-60oz of water. It doesn’t even need to be cold and I kind of prefer it closer to room temperature than cold. I quite like the taste of tap water, with sole exception being the tap water at Magic Kingdom (it’s terrible). I can’t stand when people bring me tap water with a lemon wedge in it. I didn’t ask for lemon in my water.
