Monday I am playing 9 holes at this Arnold Palmer designed course for the first time. Here is a link to descriptions of each hole. What would be your strategy with this challenging par 33? At some point they are going to add another nine and redesign the hole layout. Appreciate the help. http://www.theclubatblackthorne.com/golf-course/course-tour

I don't think you'd get the book by the time you play the course. I would look into buying, "Lowest Score Wins", http://lowestscorewins.com/

In the book it gives you a guide on how you analyze your game, and how to game plan around any course. It's really a simple and intuitive way to play golf.

1) Stay away from OB.

2) Stay away from Water, even if that means you take extra club to make sure you clear it.

3) Stay out of bunkers, even if that means eaiming away from pin locations.

4) Aim at the center of the green from outside 100 yards. Give or take the considerations from 1-3 listed above.

5) Know where your ball will end up majority of the time with your shot. Knowing this, aim in such a way your ball will land where you want it. Even if this means aiming 20 yards left and trusting it will slice back to the right. Play the shot you have that day.

Sometimes the best play isn't at the pin.

@Sante TwoGloves

Check it out on Google Earth, they have the ruler for distances.

Looks like some holes are fairly open and others have a lot of bunkers you'll want to navigate around.

Hope this helps.

cool. thanks. i was hoping someone would take a look and using their Lowest Score wins knowledge show the way. :) curious how people map out a course ahead of time. i think i will be using my 4 iron or my hybrid a lot off the tees.

There would be a 4 iron and a 5 iron. That 9th hole is just scary. For me it's only 241 and I'd pull driver and hope to clear the bunkers. I'd probably overswing and end up past on the other side of the green depending upon how well I made contact. Or in the drink. But if I had to play a guaranteed 200 yd forced carry I might as well start with my third shot from the drop zone.

I use Google earth to map out the tee shots. I make a little spreadsheet with the distance off the tee to the hazards and a reasonable guess at what club to use. Sometime driver is not the best choice. Then I print the spreadsheet out and laminate it into a card. I've done this for league tournaments at courses I have not played. The example below shows the hole yardage, my likely club choice due to the nature of the hole, the hazard to avoid off the tee, the distance to and past the hazard and fairway width.

This course has a lot of doglegs that require less than driver.

This method really helps off tee. The rest is reading the terrain, wind and getting some idea of where to miss around the green. As @saevel25 states, approach shots should target the best place to land that will minimize a higher score if you miss. That can be aiming a the left side to avoid the bunker on the right even if the flag is right.

That's excellent. Has it helped you to score better since you started doing that? I imagine it would. How big was your drop in handicap? I went on google earth for the first time in forever and checked out the course. Looks like I better bring my sand wedge. :-) not sure how to measure yardage yet. Maybe that is a special app?

To measure yardage, click on the "Show Ruler" icon (5th from the right on the toolbar on my Mac) or use the menu "Tools | Ruler", choose the "Line" tab, change the distance units to yards. Click where you want to start a line and click again where you want to end it. Voila: it shows you the distance in yards. Click again to start another measurement or click within the bounding box to move your starting or ending points about.

Note that surveying a golf course like this is a good start, but doing it this way, you have zero idea of elevation changes and what you think may be a 3 wood to stay safe short of a bunker may in real life easily be a driver when the hole is very much uphill, or what looks like a 7 iron to hit the center of a green on a par 3 could easily be a pitching wedge or a 9 iron because there is a 100ft drop from the tee box to the green...

Also, using Google Earth this way means that you have some idea of the routing of the course (try to match the map to the one on the scorecard for example), so that what you think is the #1 hole on Google Earth is really the #1 hole on the course... It goes without saying, but sometimes it's not that obvious! :)

Just as a heads up- The ruler is ONLY in Google Earth, NOT Google Maps... There is a "distance measure" feature in Maps, but it is tricky to find it. I use Earth all the time for stuff like this. Matter of fact, playing a new course next week, and I Earth'ed it for that reason. There will be a LOT of irons and 3w's off the tee at the place.

My first check now is always bluegolf.com. Click on "courses" at the bottom and search for yours. If they find it and offer a "course tour" then it's great. Basically looks like google earth but you navigate through the holes easier and it's got s built in distance tool - just click two points. :)

Very nice course. Good ball striking today, no sand, no obs, no water, lost one ball in the thick fiscus....4 4 putt greens was my downfall in my quest to break 45. 14 over 47. My only par was that beautiful par 4 9th. Driver just to the top edge of the first bunker, 7 iron to the green, two putt par. Most satisfying outing of the year. I think the ThinQ games are helping. :-)

Cool, thanks for that- Now I KNOW that there will be more long irons and 3w's on duty. Especially since those yardages are from the tips.

Holy crap I love you! I spent an hour about a month ago in my office mapping a course like this using Google Earth, a legal pad, and a ruler. I got through about 5 holes. What a great tool!

    • This. Whatever your longest iron is where you won't be in the trees a high percentage of the time. If that's shorter than 7i (as in, you'll have to hit a longer iron for your approach bringing trees back into play with high probability), I agree you're better off getting closer. But again play the percentages. If your 3w or 5w dispersion is solidly narrower than your driver, hit those. But some people hit driver straighter, so whatever gives you the highest probability of not being in the trees.
    • Essentially find the longest club you can hit straight and go with that off the tee.  You want the shortest shot into the green for your second.  If that is the hybrid or 7i or even PW, go with that.  You lose a lot more by being OB and having to re-tee
    • @TxGolfDude I’m curious as to how long this ‘repeatable swing’ has lasted. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but we all know how cruel the Golf Gods can be. I too have had quite a golf swing journey. Unfortunately, when it comes to the golf swing I have zero natural talent. Nothing about it feels comfortable or natural. The grip? I’ve done them all and it still feels like I’m holding a knotted oak branch. The proper take away feels awkward and weak. Arms in a proper position, asinine and no feel of any power. I’ve had times where I think I’ve developed an acceptable swing with handsome ball striking for months only to fall apart. So, how long have you had this swing working for ya?
    • How come the marked shots on the picture add up to 366 yards and the label says 325? Are you playing it at 325? In any case, that hole is narrow with a capital NARROW. If those woods are lost ball territory, then I think you hit from the tee whatever club is accurate enough that you'll be able to hit the fairway "most" of the time. That could even be a wedge potentially, especially depending on how restrictive the trees back near the tee are. I might seriously consider playing this hole as 8 iron 6 iron or so. There's more room up by the green than the fairway, so save the longer club for the second shot.
