he can't play on the weekends

I hope you aren't basing that opinion on how he played this weekend, because IMO he showed this weekend he is capable of putting together 4 decent rounds and competing on the weekend again.

Over the weekend he shot two strokes worse than JT, 1 shot worse than Brooks, and Spieth shot 5 strokes better than Rory over the weekend...does that mean none of them can play on the weekends either? one or two shots over two rounds isn't that much, especially considering Spieth missed a 1'11" putt and blew a ball OB in the round today.

Also, Spieth missed a 1'11" putt today and STILL gained 2.365 strokes putting today, along with gaining .976 strokes putting yesterday. Thats gaining over 3 strokes on the greens in the two weekend rounds, not bad for someone who "can't play on the weekends"

IMO this week's performance doesn't help your case that he can't play on the weekends. He hit two bad shots that cost him 2-3 shots today and a chance at the playoff.

Yet you’re basing Spieth showing he can perform on the weekend based on this one tournament?

He ranked 149th on the PGA Tour in third-round scoring average before this tournament and 201st in fourth-round scoring average. He has a good weekend and that shows he’s back to putting 4 rounds together?
Or are you just saying this weekend cannot be used as a ‘Jordan can’t play on the weekends’ argument?

I mean, yeah.

Did he perform this weekend and put 4 rounds together? The answer is clearly yes.

He finished T10 and in rounds 3 and 4 he beat the #1 player in the world by 5 strokes, played 1 stroke worse than the number 3 player in the world, and gained over 3 strokes on the field in putting.

Being able to perform on a weekend and being able to perform on a weekend multiple tournaments in a row are completely different things. I agree that a sample size of 1 tournament is not large enough to say that he's back to his prior self or that he will consistently be able to perform well in rounds 3 and 4 again.

The original statement was that he can't perform on the weekend even though he quite literally just performed on the weekend.

I drove a ball 300 yds in my last round. If someone were to come up to me and say "you cant hit a golf ball 300 yds" that wouldn't be correct because I literally just did it, and "you cant hit a golf ball 300 yds" is much different than "you cant hit average 300 yds over 20 drives".

Spieth literally just showed that he is still capable of putting 4 rounds together, now whether he can do that over multiple tournaments, that is unknown for right now. Prior to the COVID shutdown he couldn't, but he's off to a solid post- COVID start so far IMO.

98% of his strokes gained on the field came from his putting. That doesn't strike me as something that's sustainable from week to week.

Yeah I agree. I thought it was a good showing in all. I still ‘feel’ like he’s uncomfortable over the ball. Maybe I’m just fishing but he just doesn’t seem....confident when he’s over the ball.

Yeah but stats from one tournament can’t really be predictive of future play right? This was a stacked tournament and he did pretty well...especially compared to many 2019 finishes. I’m more concerned with his ‘volatility’ with his ball striking. Several players missed easy putts...XS, Morikawa so they’re just knocking some rust off. But Spieth played pretty damn well..I just seemed nervous every time he was about to hit a shot.

I don't like Bubba...a big whiner.

My nicknames:

Spieth = Cry Baby

Rory = Mental Midget

DJ = The REAL Dumbo...though In Gee Chun's (LPGA) nickname is Dumbo...she even acknowledges it and has "Dumbo" on her staff bag.

There is some correlation, but the biggest problem is that gaining that many strokes by putting is not sustainable. The leaders in SG: Putting over the full season are usually gaining under 1 stroke per round. Meaning that gaining 2 strokes per round through putting is not something Spieth can rely on over the course of the season. Spieth was second in SG: Putting last year, and gained on average .862 strokes per round. Bottom line, he can't rely on his putter being that hot every week and needs to improve the rest of his game to compete.

Sorry.  I knew it was off topic, but this seemed like the only thread addressing last week's tournament.  Maybe I missed the tournament thread or didn't get the memo.  Reed's action was an outlier... I couldn't help but notice it.

Please! Post all the stats you want, I thought Spieth faded over the weekend. I took a statistics class in college. The main thing it showed me was that you can get stats to say anything you want. If you're not getting the numbers you like, turn it upside down and look at it. Or backward, or inside out! This puts me solidly in Benjamin Disraeli's camp!

You want an example of playing on the weekend? Local boy Jason Kokrak shot 65 on Saturday and 64 on Sunday to finish second. That's 11 under just on the weekend! And he had a birdie putt on 18 graze the edge that would have put him into the playoff.

What's your point? I never said Spieth played the best out of anyone in the tournament over the weekend, but if you're 1 shot off the lead halfway through the back 9 in a final round, clearly you have played at least decently well over the weekend, which Spieth did.

Since you took a statistics class in college you should also know what outliers are, which is what Kokrak's weekend was since there was only one other golfer out of roughly 70 golfers who was within 3 shots of Kokrak's weekend score.

Certainly we can both agree that the outlier score shouldn't be used as the baseline to determine if someone was capable of putting 4 solid rounds together and can perform on the weekends, right?

I can say Spieth making a good show at this tournament definitely increased my interest to see him in the next one. Had he blown this weekend I would’ve had zero interest in watching him. Tough crowd....but I’ve heard Spieth say ‘ it’s coming along’ for so long now I would’ve just quit paying attention.
