That would only be half right...

He did. I was certain he'd fold but he proved me wrong. Good for him!

I got a little nervous with his odd choice of lay up on 18.

Yeah, no kidding. If it was a normal guy (mostly) like me it would have been a mishit but for a pro like him it was a unique positional move...

Deal!  Does the tour give strokes?

Off topic Double Mocha, but any chance that you are playing in the State Mid-Am up at the BGCC this August?  I went to school at Western and lived up there for a while, so I am nearly a lock to play unless work or family gets in the way.

It was a good choice but bad execution. With a 8 iron, he should have put it right in the middle of that left fairway. Lahiri had the same shot and birdied. He just pulled the 8 iron. Wallace did the right fairway and overshot. It’s a tougher shot from the right.

Gin & Tonic is very upset with your choice.

Ask Phil about below.

Can you explain? I thought what Notah Begay said made sense:

’The right side is much wider and leaves a better angle to the green.’

I was stunned when he first pulled out the 3 wood.

My bag:

Taylor Made R7 (x-stiff).
Taylor Made Burner 2 irons (stiff)
Cleveland Wedges (gap and 60)
Odyssey two ball putter (white)

It’s odd he said that because 5 minutes before he was praising Lahiri. Wallace hit it to between the two bunkers on the right in the fairway. Spieth was trying for the left middle fairway with an 8 iron, which he’s pretty accurate with. He just pulled it uncharacteristically. The flag was top of green from this angle, so Wallace had less green to work with and went through. Lahiri had all the green to work with an put it to something like 5 feet. So Spieth still was the only one in his group to get it GIR, which is all he needed to do to win.

The other dumb thing Azinger said was Hoffman chip being an easy one. Downhill lie from the rough to a green sloping away and a flag 7 or 8 paces on. Left top rough in the aerial. That’s a tough shot even for Pros. He missed long, which is expected.

Some of that is smoke and mirrors.

When we were consulting, we saw a few bits of data like this (I’m going to slightly inflate some of these numbers to make the point):

Imagine a par four where the scoring average is 4.0. Spieth might hit a drive into the “other” here, from where the expected score is 4.2, thus LOSING 1.2 strokes off the tee. But when he arrives at his ball, he’s in some trampled down stuff with a wide enough gap between the trees that he doesn’t have to pitch out sideways or take a penalty stroke or anything. So he hits a decent shot to 33’ on the green, thus shaving those 1.2 strokes off as the average from there is 2.0 strokes (he reduced his expected strokes to hole out from 4.2 to 2.0 with one stroke, hence, +1.2).

Thus, his driver numbers are deflated sometimes, and his approach shot gains are inflated sometimes.

I am not sure I get how those numbers work.  He hit the green in 2 and he would score either 3 or say more realistically 4.  If he scores 4 where is he gaining strokes.  Is it from hitting the green in 2 from a difficult lie/area and is he losing strokes off the tee by hitting it into said area 🤷‍♂️

Also, why is the differential 1.2 and not 0.2

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Soft 500 golf ball

To all the Gin & Tonics I've ever drank I would like to send my sincere apologies.

That would be about 4000 apologies.

I'll be busy for a while.

Spieth has been playing well this year, building up to a nice win. Let’s see if he can carry the momentum into Augusta where he’s won and finished 2nd twice. People forget how hard it is to win on the PGA tour. Glad to see him smiling and back. Very excited about the masters holistically.
