You don't know what you're hearing here. You heard a noise.

Hell, dude, you don't even have a screenshot or a photo of the event's leaderboard.

I’m relying on the OP, who was pretty clear on the circumstances, and he WAS there.

Regardless though, IF the circumstances were that any of my players quit after 9 because they were simply “out of it”, we’d have one very direct conversation.  If it ever happened again, I’d afford them the opportunity to participate in another sport...

We all run into adversity in life.  High School isn’t too early to learn that quitting when things get tough isn’t going to get you very far in life.

Hearsay. And what "circumstances"? Does he know the tournament conditions? The individual circumstances of any of the withdrawing players? Anything else?

He was pretty light on the details.

But hey, here you go:

We don't know what their reasons were.

As I said.  If they quit because they thought they were out of it, they wouldn’t play for me if it ever happened again.

I don’t give out participation trophies either.  Hard, I know, but welcome to life.  It’s tough.  A lot tougher than a High School golf tournament.

I don't either.

The simple truth is that you don't know much of anything about the topic of this thread.

I should rename the topic "Old Unaffected Adults Without Knowledge Make Assumptions, Leap to Conclusions in Judging Youth"

Are you intentionally ignoring the several times now where I’ve specified that my comments are specifically directed towards those that quit because they felt they were out of competition?

If you’re ok with that behavior as a coach, which I kind of doubt, that’s fine.  But I’m not.

You don’t know that that occurred even once. Are you intentionally ignoring that very simple point? You’re making judging statements without really knowing much of anything.

Plausible. Unlikely but @David in FL doesn’t know.

The tournament could’ve given them a bad lunch. Heat stroke. Allergic reactions.

Or maybe they quit because they ducked.

Fact remains… we don’t know.

Yeah, sure, but...PARTICIPATION TROPHIES!!! Aaaagh!!!!

Seriously, though, there are good and bad reasons for quitting pretty much anything in life. I’d hesitate to get too upset unless I knew the exact circumstances.

You mean like when a 6-6 team goes to a bowl game?😜

We don’t know the circumstances regarding this. If they just quit, then that would be disappointing. But there are a whole host of other possibilities.

Well, I’ve had the shanks before so bad that I quit in order to protect my playing partners and other golfers on the course.😳

It was pretty obvious why the WD.  I don't know if they have a mercy ruling but plan to make contact with the organizers to discuss.  There were too many WD for it to by injuries.  It was obvious by their front 9 scores why they didn't play the back 9.  Some of the kids were shooting 60s and 70s on nine holes.  Saw one 97.  But again, I think it sends a totally wrong message to WD after nine even if there is no chance.  Perfect opportunity to work on the mental side of the game.

I wonder though....if a person withdraws is that score posted for handicap purposes?  Could this be a way to avoid posting a really bad score?

It’s still an assumption.

Plus, I’m not the “never quit” type. Sometimes it’s prudent to quit. Quitting a marriage that flat out will never work makes sense. Quitting a war you’ll never win makes sense. Quitting smoking makes sense. 😉

What if the WDs were all playing together and they were making the turn as their teammates were finishing 18? What if they were holding up the course that badly?

Plus like @jamo said… why do you care so much?

There is wisdom is knowing when it is prudent to quit something.

Heck there are times when people quit things with out really making what we call conscious choice. Like a person who is really into a martial art, but then ends up changing jobs, getting married, etc... Then they return to the sport 20 years later.

I agree, with out the reasoning behind it, speculation is just that speculation. Rash judgments on speculation is not a good thing.

Part of the point of the original post was the sheer number of withdrawals that this particular event had. Any single withdrawal can have a very solid reason behind it, but the number struck the man as over-the-top.

I have no experience with high school or youth golf, but suspect that the dig at the younger generation might not be totally warranted. Last year, a full quarter of my flight didn't show up for the second round of our Club Championship.

Well I am a golf coach and I can tell you this, if any of my kids just decided to quit, they would be gone. That being said, we have local rules when it comes to a golf match. For instance, you play until you make double bogey, if your score goes above that, pick up the ball record the double bogey score and circle it. It keeps pace of play quicker. It could be (in this situation) that something like that may have happened. We also have a similar rule during tournaments for kids who shoot a huge front 9 score. Again, it's for pace of play. Maybe that was the case here? All of that being said, I have coached other sports also and seen kids literally quit during a game/match. It happens relativity often these days. I don't condone it and don't support it but I can't tell you how many kids I've seen transfer to other schools because they had no shot to start/play at the school they were attending. When I played sports as a kid, you had to work harder to earn that starting spot. Those days are long gone. I'm not that old, and the kids these days do not work nearly as hard as even 10-15 years ago. We can't even coach any more when the weather gets to hot or there is some kind of testing coming up that the kids should be home to study for. It's become ridiculous.

If younger players quitting after nine holes in tournaments becomes a trend then im all for it. . Then maybe i can finish a round in less than 5 damn hours... College players are the worst...

I would encourage this kid to quit.  I would drive him to the pawnshop after the tournament and help him sell his clubs.  I was trying to think of the equivalent of a 9 hole 97 in another high school sport and I'm coming up blank.  Maybe throwing 23 interceptions in a half?  Scoring 43 points for the other team in basketball?
