So you don't believe the Open got there (United Kingdom) first and other Opens need to indicate their country in front of the word "Open"?

Nah, it's just that people calling it "The Open" grate on me like Ohio State players calling it "THE Ohio State University". It's a *me* problem

I once had a similar shot on a par 3.  I was on the green and had to wedge over the corner of a sand trap to get it close to the hole.  Used a high bounce, wide-soled wedge but, nevertheless, took a divot out of the putting surface.  Seems like a golf course architect wouldn't design a hole like this.

Which begs the question: Is this a one-putt or two-putt?  I made the 3 footer off the wedge shot.

Shots from on the putting surface go into the books as putts, regardless of club.  Shots from off aren't, even with a putter.

Plenty of golf courses where hitting the green at one part makes it tough to roll the ball to other pin positions.  Hole 6 at Riviera comes to mind too, and I think TPC San Antonio #17 is similar.  Non-pros playing probably shouldn't be allowed to hit a non-putter from the putting surface.

Kindly remind me what is printed on each trophy.

Uh oh.  Too steep of angle of attack.  You get those clean crisp short game shots with a good shallow AoA.  Really helps with the spin.

Why? I’d still do less damage than Sergio.

Good point Vinsk.  Thinking poor Sergio has become somewhat irrelevant.  As for me I am not going to let the design of the green, nor pin placement, dictate that I putt away from the hole.

Interesting that the last two champions at Pebble Beach were McDowell and Woodland. McDowell was ranked #33 in the world when he edged Greg Havret and Woodland #25. Between those two wins at other venues you've got McIlroy, Rose, Kaymer, Simpson, Koepka, Spieth, and DJ, all future Hall-of-Famers (yes, I think Simpson will have a resume good enough when all is said and done to get in). Perhaps Pebble brings in more of the underdog winner? You had a few more big underdog names in contention than usual with Reavie and Hadley in the last few groups. Could just be a total coincidence, too.

Also, really concerned that this is the "new" U.S. Open. Lightening up on the difficulty to try and make players more happy. Gore being brought in to try and get players' opinions and make changes based on their recommendations. Heard some guys this morning on radio say in their talks with USGA officials that the US Open is going to try and make the US Open more player-happy in the future. T

It did not look easy to me.  Approach shots too short. That high grass wreaked havoc on those who got in it and holes 8-13 beat them up pretty good. The winning score was less than the last five pro-ams there so the course played tougher with better talent.

I think the USGA screwed up Shinnecock,  but got Pebble Beach right.

Good answer, and a correct one, but I bet Sergio could pitch from on a green without leaving a divot if he needed to do so.

Don't say that to Benny Beaver...

Or Brutus Buckeye! There's the crux of the matter. TOSU does not want to be confused with any other OSU's! I'm a fan of TOSU and think it's a small worry. Their football program is successful while the others have had a moment here and there.

BTW, I refer to "our" open as "The U.S. Open", and refer to the open across the pond the "The Open Championship"! After all, when it was created, it was THE only one around!

I graduated from UNC.  I always hear, "Oh, North Carolina."  Nope, University of Northern Colorado.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
