Love me some fairway woods. I’m not a high swing speed guy, but I’m not slow either. I play 3, 5, and 7 woods, then 4h. Higher launch, higher spin gives me a softer landing. Took out a 52* wedge and changed around to a 48, 54, and 60 mph edge setup to accommodate more clubs at the long end. I like it.

I find hybrids are not as good out of rough as I have seen advertised. Maybe it’s my technique, but I am reaching for my irons instead now.

For me it depends on the depth of the rough. But in general my concern is a poorly struck iron out of the rough will be a disaster for me whereas a hybrid will still move the ball even if just a ground burner.

I find it challenging because I can’t practice it at the range, only on the course.

I’m lucky to have hillsides and rough to practice with…..and  they’re on the far right side of the range so I’m good.😃🥴

That's like the bushes on the far side of my range that I practice out of. When wielding a golf club bushes have more give than you might think. It's the big oak trees that don't budge.

For me the shape of the sole and leading edge on the M6 9 wood makes it much easier and consistent to hit out of the rough compared to the hybrids. It seems to glide better through the tall grass, and doesn't get wrapped up and pulled closed or open as easily.

Please tell me it was also a vintage MB rather than modern utility iron.

Oh yeah, definitely.   This was in the late 80s/early 90s and it was old then.  All the clubs were.   The “clam digger” 5 wood was metal, but I think everything else was wood.

As you can see from my signature, I'm a 9-wood user. As IACAS noted, at 23* it has the loft of an old school 7-wood. On a simulator, I had an average carry of 155 yards, which is being born out on course. It is a great option for 150-160 yard par 3s and similar length approach shots.

    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
