I like Scheffler. This is what’s cool about golf though. Had he choked and went to a playoff with Rory….I’d be thrilled had Rory won. Now If this was a RC…damn you Rory! Lol…..

Tiger Woods is the only golfer to win more than 2 majors in a single season. If we are talking about the 4 majors now.

I would say he does not.

Ben Hogan disagrees.

I think he can pull off another major this year, but definitely don’t think a grand slam is going to happen.  Just a matter of how long he can stay hot.

Grand slam, highly unlikely. Would love to see it. But most certainly won't happen. I can see him picking up one more this year. For some reason feeling like the other, if it happens, will be the PGA.

Hell, the last time a career grand slam was accomplished was 2008.

Tiger for the third time?

Scheffler may eventually win the career grand slam. In one year? You would be out of your mind to bet that. Scheffler’s on a heater, but most of these heater’s fizzle out. Unless your Tiger from the ‘99 PGA through the 2002 U.S. Open,

And 2005 to 2009. His two heater runs were insane. About 50 regular Tour wins mixed with 13 majors.

And Ben couldn’t have won four in 1953 even if he tried. The qualifying rounds for the PGA were the day or week after the 1953 Open. And Transatlantic travel was still done mainly by ship still at that point.

Some Transatlantic Flights, but most of those had to stop (for fuel) in Gander, Newfoundland to make it.

He is the only one who has a chance this year, so there's that. 😎

That is true, but even if there were no scheduling issue, he hadn't played in the PGA since 1948 (which he won) and didn't play it again until 1960.  The PGA was match play until 1958, and his legs simply did not allow him to play such a physically demanding event.  He played in it 3 times, after it returned to stroke play, MC, T9, and T15.  So the scheduling conflict really had nothing to do with him not playing the 1953 PGA.

That’s how the thought popped in my head.  You need the first one to have any chance.  Odds are against him, but he’s the only one with any odds.

The potential for 216 holes (2 18-hole qualifying rounds, 2 18-hole matches on Friday and 4 36-hole matches Saturday through Tuesday) over 7 days is a lot of golf.

Hogan after his accident really didn’t play a whole lot but when he did he won.

Exactly.  Which is why the whole "he couldn't go after the Grand Slam because of scheduling" thing is a complete myth.  The schedule thing was pure coincidence.

  • 4 weeks later...

Jordon Spieth : In 2015 Spieth won the Masters and US Open.  Spieth went to St Andrews and finished 4th in the British Open, he was one shot off the play off having bogeyed the 17th.  The 3 man play off was won by Zac Johnson (Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman were the other 2 in the play off).  Spieth then finished 2nd in PGA, behind Jason Day by 3 strokes.

That was in 2015.  It would be nice to think that Scottie Scheffler could pull off the Grand Slam in 2022.

We will know by Sunday evening (PGA), if it is still possible.....

    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
