OKay, many of these comments on roids are the typical comments. Steroids don't make you bigger. All they do is allow you to train more often and longer. Your training and diet is what makes you bigger. Otherwise, people would just take the roids and not work out. So, no you can't always tell who is on and who is not. I would say that there are probably more people on them that you have no clue about than people that are on them and you can tell by looking.

As far as Doug Baron.....150% on steroids!!

Looking at Barron's results over the past few years, you have to ask: what was he on? Mogadon? Valium?

Guy has health problems, doctor prescribes help, drugs prescribed are illegal on tour. It's kind of a shame. What was his intent? To be healthy, not gain advantage. What I would like to know is if he knew the drugs were banned would he have chosen not to take them and stay unhealthy or would he have taken them anyway?

My understanding is that his non-medicated testosterone levels were found to be withing the normal range when tested by a 3rd party doctor. Given that, and given that he was not granted an exemption, well, what do you want the tour to do? They have to be consistent in rule application and he doesn't leave them much choice.

probably need more info to give a fair opinion, but here is one thought. does pga know that he is on something before the testing? if i were taking steroid prescribed by mds but know that there may be issues with pga, i would, without any hesitation or delay once i know pga sanctions a list of banned meds, contact pga proactively before any testing is done. now the horse is out of the barn. tough chance for pga to recind. no need to get a black eye for one guy. use him to set an example, justified or not.

The tour said Barron was the first player to be suspended under the policy, and not necessarily the first to receive a positive test. The tour is not required to suspend or announce any punishment for recreational drugs.

It seems he was singled out!

HGH would be very beneficial to Golf players. hhhmmm, you can't test for it.

Many people seem to forget the wide range of what a steroid can do for you. Many athletes take steroids not to only get stronger, so never truly do, but the recovery thing is dramatically reduced. We all know the wear and tear you put on your body is staggering... Just a thought...

Anyone who thinks these young golfers arent doping are just plain ignorant. Secretariat still holds many track records. People or animals dont magically improve 25%. The idea that it is equipment is just as ignorant. They can measure culb head speed and it is up more than 30%. When a guy 5ft8in hits a ball 380 yards something is up. The idea that PEDS wont help a golfer are plain stupid. Look what happened to baseball in the 80-90s. Magically mediocre players started hitting 50 home runs. Just like Tiger and many other golfers the Canseco magic happened. They went from normal looking guys to the incredible hulk in 2 years. That doesnt happen in the gym without help. PEDS help focus and strength. Sunday Bubba Watson who never goes to a gym - hit a drive over a green 400 yards away with no wind helping. Just like baseball the PGA loves the results because they need spectators and there is nothing more exciting than a 400 yard drive! No one in the Golf "journalism" world will dig into it because they will get punished. Gary Player had the guts to talk about it and he is viewed as a kook. Well he loves the game and if they dont start SERIOUS testing the game will be ruined. After Lance Armstrong got caught doping cycling is totally different. the times are slower and the finishes, especially on the mountains are pretty even. These golfers make millions to be mediocre and have plenty of money to pay the Drs who specialize in this and they do and will keep doing it. Can you imagine when the PGA finally gets tough like cycling or baseball and the same golfers are playing 8000 yard courses while hitting the ball like they should? The game will be ruined and the PGA doesnt get it

I will - I love golf and care - I loved watching the old guys because they were not on drugs - these young golfers are cheating and soon it will ruin the game for all of us. How people cant see the similarity to baseball is insane!  Gary Player gets it and he knows whats going on. What pisses me off are the phony journalists who are afraid of the golf gods who are so selfish that they will sit and watch teir sport turn to crap because fans are so naive they think its wild to see someone 5ft8 hit the ball 400 yds and think its real!  Just like Brady Andersons 55 home run season was real. Sickening. I am an 8 and am 6 2 and workout regularly - I couldnt hit a ball that far down hill, down wind on concrete. yet everyone is going nuts over Jason Day who magically hits 400 yd drives and has club head speed 30% faster than Nicholas

Are you that sure that this many people are taking PEDs? I know a lot of high school students that fit into the 5'8" category making 300+ yard drives. They're just young and flexible.

I had two friends that took steroids for medical reasons, and both of them stated that while they were really strong during the time they took it that their accuracy, in certain sports, suffered tremendously. There were lots of side effects that interfered with their ability to focus.

Seems like another plausible explanation could be that golf is simply attracting more athletic players than it did in the past?

I wonder how many players blaze it up every now and then..I don't think it would give any sort of advantage (however, I've played with some guys that toke during the round and then shoot 72).

I can tell you that the guy that Won the Big12 tournament back in 1984 toked it up. 20 minutes before the biggest high school golf tournament in the state of Illinois. How do I know? Because our coach caught us. He shot a 69 and I shot a 77. He went on to play golf at Mississippi State.

Ridiculous post. I teach kids who can hit the ball far and don't even touch artificial sweeteners let alone PEDs. It's also Nicklaus. Not Nicholas.

How about some proof of their PED's use?  At this point you just seem a bit jealous you can't hit the ball as far as they can.  Maybe the simple answer is you're not as talented as they are.

    • Nah, man. People have been testing clubs like this for decades at this point. Even 35 years. @M2R, are you AskGolfNut? If you're not, you seem to have fully bought into the cult or something. So many links to so many videos… Here's an issue, too: - A drop of 0.06 is a drop with a 90 MPH 7I having a ball speed of 117 and dropping it to 111.6, which is going to be nearly 15 yards, which is far more than what a "3% distance loss" indicates (and is even more than a 4.6% distance loss). - You're okay using a percentage with small numbers and saying "they're close" and "1.3 to 1.24 is only 4.6%," but then you excuse the massive 53% difference that going from 3% to 4.6% represents. That's a hell of an error! - That guy in the Elite video is swinging his 7I at 70 MPH. C'mon. My 5' tall daughter swings hers faster than that.
    • Yea but that is sort of my quandary, I sometimes see posts where people causally say this club is more forgiving, a little more forgiving, less forgiving, ad nauseum. But what the heck are they really quantifying? The proclamation of something as fact is not authoritative, even less so as I don't know what the basis for that statement is. For my entire golfing experience, I thought of forgiveness as how much distance front to back is lost hitting the face in non-optimal locations. Anything right or left is on me and delivery issues. But I also have to clarify that my experience is only with irons, I never got to the point of having any confidence or consistency with anything longer. I feel that is rather the point, as much as possible, to quantify the losses by trying to eliminate all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Or, I feel like we agree. Compared to the variables introduced by a golfer's delivery and the variables introduced by lie conditions, the losses from missing the optimal strike location might be so small as to almost be noise over a larger area than a pea.  In which case it seems that your objection is that the 0-3% area is being depicted as too large. Which I will address below. For statements that is absurd and true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. You will need to provide some objective data to back that up and also define what true 100% sweet spot is. If you mean the area where there are 0 losses, then yes. While true, I do not feel like a not practical or useful definition for what I would like to know. For strikes on irons away from the optimal location "in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?"   In my opinion it ok to be dubious but I feel like we need people attempting this sort of data driven investigation. Even if they are wrong in some things at least they are moving the discussion forward. And he has been changing the maps and the way data is interpreted along the way. So, he admits to some of the ideas he started with as being wrong. It is not like we all have not been in that situation 😄 And in any case to proceed forward I feel will require supporting or refuting data. To which as I stated above, I do not have any experience in drivers so I cannot comment on that. But I would like to comment on irons as far as these heat maps. In a video by Elite Performance Golf Studios - The TRUTH About Forgiveness! Game Improvement vs Blade vs Players Distance SLOW SWING SPEED! and going back to ~12:50 will show the reference data for the Pro 241. I can use that to check AskGolfNut's heat map for the Pro 241: a 16mm heel, 5mm low produced a loss of efficiency from 1.3 down to 1.24 or ~4.6%. Looking at AskGolfNut's heatmap it predicts a loss of 3%. Is that good or bad? I do not know but given the possible variations I am going to say it is ok. That location is very close to where the head map goes to 4%, these are very small numbers, and rounding could be playing some part. But for sure I am going to say it is not absurd. Looking at one data point is absurd, but I am not going to spend time on more because IME people who are interested will do their own research and those not interested cannot be persuaded by any amount of data. However, the overall conclusion that I got from that video was that between the three clubs there is a difference in distance forgiveness, but it is not very much. Without some robot testing or something similar the human element in the testing makes it difficult to say is it 1 yard, or 2, or 3?
