Leaving aside some of the shots that others have named that at my low skill level would be nothing short of heroic and thus only occur sporadically (and without any control by me--pure luck), my favorite shots that I actually can produce with some regularity:

1. 3H from 220 out or, somewhat less reliably, 5W from 235ish that lands on and holds the green (easily my favorite shot and probably the only thing I manage to do with some consistency that gets me compliments from playing partners--this is also the shot that is most likely to get me on the board in a scramble when teamed with good players)
2. Scrambling with a difficult up and down from a questionable lie (I have to do this far, far too often, but very few things are more satisfying for a dodgy ball-striker than pulling it out of the fire several times in a round)
3. High smash drive that goes right where it's aimed (okay, here I'm shading into rare territory for me--so very many ways to hook the ball, apparently)
4. Any pured iron (love that sound and feeling; too bad it comes and goes for me at random)
5. 30-foot putt that holes out or lags to within a foot

I can't say these are my "all time" favourites but here are yesterday's.

1.) two smooth 3-woods to the front edge of a very tight par 5.
2.) full 50.5 degree wedge to 12 feet - the divot stayed on the clubface to the finish position, falling on the ground behind me
3.) making that putt
4.) punching an 8 iron to < 10 feet from 140 yards in a bad lie (poorly repaired old divot)
5.) having the guts to play a target par 4 the smart way (backwards - 9 iron, 6 iron) and hitting the approach pin high (~15 feet left)

#1 Driving a green in one - ultimate hero shot and is obviously rare, depending on certain holes on your course.

#2 Just a well struck wedge from 100-120 feet that goes high and lands soft. Those feel good .

#3 Anytime I hit a 3 iron straight and long I'm happy.

#4 A well judged flop shot that finishes beside the hole - Special thanks to Phil's 'Secrets of the short game'

#5 Any decent lenght putt.

A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

I didn't include this in my post but this would be one of them for me.

I rarely use my 3 iron but recently at a little scramble tournament between friends, we had 3 people on our team which meant we we circulate hitting 2 shots. Par 5, we had about 220-230 yards left. it was my turn to hit twice and first shot I hit my 3 iron PERFECT and landed about 15 ft from the pin. Figured, hey can't get much better than that...i'll hit a 3i again and hope it lands even closer. Lo and behold, hit my 3 iron with a nice fade to land it about 4 ft from the pin. Made the eagle putt! Hitting long irons, while sometimes intimidating, is so much fun when done right.

1. Holing out from off the green.

2. Making long putts.

3. Sticking it tap in close.

4. Perfect tee shots that felt just perfect and are bombed.

5. Playing a perfect short game shot and almost holing it, nothing but a tap in left.

to recap a few from today:

1) Flushed drive on 11 w a slight draw ending in the short stuff on a hole I normally go right on all day..w a PW left into the green
2) 235 yd 5w onto the par 5 10 and sticking it to 15 feet...on in two baby!
3) Tap in birdies (see 2.)
4) Draining a 35 footer from the fringe to save par after a horrible sand shot
5) A flop shot to a tight pin and zero green to work with ... and leaving it 4" from the hole

I had a good day today!!! hahaha!

but my absolute fav shot in the world is a greenside chip (10-15 yds), flying it almost to the hole
it hits and instantly stops, just as your playing partners yell "SIT, SIT, WHOA !!!"
leaving it cuddled right up to the hole

Thank you Pro V1x for that shot!

a well struck long iron shot that lands close to the pin
a longish (~20ft) breaking putt that's read perfectly and sinks into the hole
well played short and mid iron approaches
long drives
close short game shots

In the order I think of them:
- A 30 yard pitch that only rolls out 3 feet.
- Hitting a GIR.
- The 3 foot putt for par.
- Hitting a great drive down the middle of the fairway, or even cutting off a dogleg if I'm lucky.
- Actually managing the course: Being in situations where I can't just hit as far as possible, or at least it's not necessarily to my advantage to do so. I love forced lay-ups for some reason.

Any Golf shot that flies exactly like I imagined... Their RARE!
Full swing wedge that stops dead on impact. Had one on Tuesday that checked back into it's own mark on the green.
Short chips & out to 20-30 yards that manage to nestle up close.
A low stinger under the branches to get out of trouble
Any putt that appears to have a real chance of falling whether it does or not. Putting is my weakest part of the game!

1. Well struck wedge that's right at it. Land it short, one hop forwards and spin back towards the hole. Love seeing the ball having a chance to go in both ways!
2. Any putt within 10 feet that goes in, especially those par saves after tricky short game shots
3. 40 meter pitch shots over a bunker (or any 40 meter pitch for that matter) that take one hop and check up for a tap in birdie
4. A well struck long iron/two hybrid to set up a birdie on a long (i.e. 200 yard) par 3
5. Puring a drive down the middle and then proceeding to do the same with a 3W or 2H to set up an eagle putt

What I love about golf is that is has something for players at every level. Here is my "first year of golf" list:

1. A well struck iron.
There's something magical about the sound it makes and how the ball seems to just go and go. Even if it's a bit off line, if it flies high and straight, it's awesome. This was my first golf "achievement".

2. Any drive that is longer than 150 yards and doesn't slice.
For many (and for me at least) the slice is the first hard problem to get rid of and hitting a straight drive with anything more than 50% power is an amazing accomplishment.

3. A fairway wood, hit from the fairway.
Very tricky, indeed.

4. Hitting a shot from a greenside bunker to within 10 feet
This is the one time, other than putting, that a newbie might get to feel like a pga pro.

5. Making a really long put.
I actually think beginners have an advantage when it comes to making 50 foot putts. They don't realize how hard it's supposed to be . .or don't put any pressure on themselves . .or whatever . . but I've seen a lot of newbies, including myself, drop some super long putts (not with regularity, of course).

5. A well struck fairway wood from the fairway. I struggled for years with this but have finally gained the confidence to hit it properly and seeing the low, boring trajectory just gives me an 'ahhhh....' feeling.

4. The drive that most everybody here has mentioned. You don't feel it because it's like hitting a marshmallow. The ball takes off on the perfect line, draws a little bit, hits the fairway and runs. I always hold the pose on that shot.

3. The 40 yard, over a trap to a short-sided pin flop shot that jumps off the face of the club, hits the green and hops backwards 3-4 inches stopping 5 feet from the cup. Just the faces of my playing partners make that shot worth it.

2. A crisply struck 5 iron that fades perfectly into the portion of the green I intended. It's been my go-to shot for a LONG time and has produced some amazing results... although it's produced some equally disgusting results when I pull-hook it instead.

1. My 8 iron from 140 yards that tracks the pin, hits the green from a high trajectory... hops, then backs up for me. It doesn't back up much... but even if it's 3 feet... I know I hit the shot well... and like others, I stride to the green with the pitch-mark repair tool in hand while others are chipping. I don't think there's a more satisfying feeling in the game.

Would say canning a birdie putt, but it has been so long since I've actually made one that I pretty much forget what it feels like.
