Yeah, I agree. It's too bad those people don't get this press to find their maximum potential. I remember back and forth chats with @GHIN0011458 , and feel like people like him and others on this site deserve all the attention that Dan is promoting.

If Dan really cares about golf, he would use his marketing skills to sell the public on those people, and grow the game instead.

I agree but I don't see him doing anything like that, Here is the current OGWR amatuers and Dan actually thinks he can get past these guys??? I know one of the players in the low 800's and he's a flat out stick, has to play at a +5 on a 139 slope, Dan is a joke.

Actually I think we are born with it.

The 12 year old analogy doesn't apply at all to why I can hit the ball as far as I could when I was stronger.

Of course, but that doesn't mean the speed you have today is your max speed. You can build it. Speed comes from strength...look at the difference between a sprinter and a distance runner.

You can be born a fast runner...if you do squats and deadlifts...you'll get faster.

As far as why it doesn't apply to you...the only real way would be for you to get data from a trackman before and after your strength loss. You could have made up for a loss of strength with better technique.

I'm not saying that we can't improve our body speed slightly. I am saying we can't improve it very much.

Luke Donald will never hit a ball as far as Rory McIlroy no matter how many weights he lifts.

Greg Maddox could never throw as fast as Sandy Koufax no matter how hard he worked at it (and he was a bigger stronger guy).

You might take a guy that runs a 5 flat 40 and get him down to a 4.8 but he'll never be a 4.3 guy. Another guy might run a 4.4 the first day he walks on a field.

We can of course improve our technique and get the most out of what we've got.

Edit: The guy on the bottom picture you posted can bulk up all he wants and he still won't be a sprinter. He has slow twitch fibers and the sprinter has fast twitch fibers.

It's amazing how this thread just keeps going.

Trying to figure out what makes golfers good is always going to generate a never ending discussion.

As for me, I keep coming back with pretty much the same points.  Some of the info he is passing out is not good - not all of it, but the gist of it. It bothers me, but I guess it's nothing new, with all the pros out there right now who aren't that great.

Hey, there's about 4 more years of this till it resolves. Dig yourself in, break out the popcorn.

So according to a Flightscope rep, his clubs are not flat enough. Let's wait and see after he gets his clubs adjusted how much improvement there is. http://thedanplan.com/flightscope-ready-and-some-d-plane-thoughts/

I believe it will help to some degree but ultimately his own ability will be the final factor. I have always measured out to standard lie, length, with every clubfitter I have ever seen but this was done in a very basic process and not with a launch monitor, that is something I have always wanted to have done and am more determined to do if I want to get to the next level the equipment does matter.

Is this true?

Yes, forged are easier to bend.

They allow a lot more customization.

Read a few of the posts for a good laugh. :-D

According to Dan he hits it as fast as the average tour pro, but with a much higher smash factor!

Funny. :-$

Funny.

In Dan's defense it may be possible the flight scope like he said will not throw anything out that is not solid evidence, however I find that highly unlikely, Also the guy/salesman with the flight scope is doing a good job hiding the fact he's trying to sell Dan a new set of sticks would be more believable. I'm not doing it but it sure would be funny if someone were to post this info in his blog. Also Dan may be full of crap about his numbers and lies to make his donators feel as if they are supporting something worthwhile. Lastly, is somebody now flying this clown to Europe on their dime again? First Australia now Switzerland? I do however have to give credit where credit is undoubtedly due, he knows how to sell himself pretty good or is it just the law of averages if you shoot an arrow aimlessly at a herd of buffalo your chances of hitting one are better than average.

If he said his swing speed was 93 with the 7i, it would be a little more believable than his smash factor being 4-5% more efficient than a PGA pro. I still wouldn't buy it.

Unless the shaft in his 7 iron is somewhere around 43"  Dan can't swing a 7 iron that fast, nowhere near that fast.

I just think at his level, better fitting clubs aren't going to help as much as a good pro and smart and effective practice and just nitty gritty hard work. As he progresses, his swing might change and he'll need to be fit again. If he were a lower handicap, then, yeah, custom clubs are going help more than practice in the short term. And there is a disconnect between his as of late luxury accommodations, world travel, expensive training and the donate button. At least to me. If he was getting a free ride on good and effective instruction and posted useful stuff for people to learn from, fine. Basically a not trivial portion of his blog consists of products and services he has gotten pro bono, so he is exposed to those with the most aggressive and or opportune marketing, not necessarily the best and or relevant product/service. So if he gets really good or meets his goal, he's gonna tell us to take this vision mental class? It sounds expensive and money better spent elsewhere. But this mental camp, the world travel and his tv spots test driving high performance cars is a turnoff, at least in terms of golf, learning and instruction wise. The blog seems to be veering away from learning swing to marketing opportunity. If you were the professor of the deliberate study he is putting into practice, would you be happy how The Dan Plan is going? He's not exactly helping to support the professor's theory so far.

Always. The club is heavier and shorter. A shorter radius will almost always be swung more slowly.

I could beat Dan using my wife's set of clubs.

How about Preston playing righty? That would be interesting. Don't mean to put you on the spot Preston :-)

    • I know there are a lot of people on the site with science and engineering backgrounds here so @p1n9183 is getting a lot of questions about how this theory would even work, but I’m going to ask the obvious one here… why? Like what is the purpose if you already have a speed radar, even if such a thing as you proposed was feasible?
    • It might be at some distances, but none are realistic. For example, if I put a microphone 2.5m away from a sound source and another 3.5m away, the fall-off there is only about 3 (2.98 I think), but your sound would have to be incredibly loud. A microphone that picks up an 80 dB sound at 1 millimeter will only pick up about 12 dB at 2.5 meters (and it's still only 20 dB at 1m from an 80 dB sound source). I also don't think swinging a club generates a very loud sound, and sounds that can injure your hearing require 85 dB or so. In other words… You need to generate (at the source) an ear-injuring level of sound with your club, and if the microphone is as little as one foot away, that 85 dB is already down to ~43.5 dB. It's almost half of what it was. Swing 14" away with the same 85 dB swing instead of 12" and the same swing will read 42 dB. Sound attenuation is subject to similar laws like light fall-off because it radiates, so it diminishes in the inverse square: I have also talked to some sound engineers, and they've laughed and said that unless you were controlling EVERY aspect of this, including: temperature distance of max clubhead speed from the microphone angle (both axes) to the microphone clubface orientation (a face open or closed will change the frequency) location of the max clubhead speed (reaching peak speed at the same exact place) everything in the vicinity, including the shoes and clothes you're wearing, the surface you're on, etc. ideally with all of them producing virtually no noise even when moving. You'd have to control all of those to within very small margins. Even just the doppler effect is going to dramatically change your input. No. No, you need to realize how wrong you've gotten all of this. See above about the doppler effect. Unless you're a swing robot, you're not going to generate the max speed at the same exact location every time. Tell me, @p1n9183, why do you think recording artists (singers) put their mouths so damn close to the microphone?
    • Digging deeper... you can use the frequency of the woosh also.  It is possible to measure the speed of an object using the noise it generates when passing through a decibel reader,  but with some limitations and considerations. The method relies on the relationship between the frequency of the sound emitted by the moving object and its speed.  When an object moves at a constant speed, it generates sound with a characteristic frequency, known as the "Doppler frequency." The frequency of the sound emitted by the object can be related to its speed using the formula: f = (v / c) * f0 where: - f: frequency of the emitted sound - v: object speed - 😄 speed of sound (approximately 343 m/s in air at standard temperature and pressure) - f0: frequency of the sound emitted when the object is at rest Having "C" been constant, and "f0" been unknown but equal for both swings you only need to compare the frequency of  each swing to know how much faster or slower is a swing over the other.
    • As I told you before, the sound attenuation is 3 db at 1 meter (38").  At 7" (your example) is a wooping 1 db less, for an 80db 7 iron is under 1% error. I know for sure that my PRGR is not that accurate, even my skytrak isn't that accurate. For a FREE unit seams to be promising if you can't afford a speed meter.   Again, you are swinging in the same spot, over and over again in the same session. Phone position is the same , background sound is the same, environment is the same. The only difference is the peak sound you produce when you whoosh the club.     You need to do a lot better to discharge an idea.
