Close but no cigar.

The cut came a lot lower than expected. The East course was set up for scoring.

Here's the tale...

Best 36 holes I've ever seen Dave play. Far, far better than last year where he made the cut.

At one point, Dave hit 22 greens in regulation in a row. In the final round, he hit 17 of 18 - the first 16 in a row. If he had birdied the last two, he'd have made the cut. Instead he kinda wiped a 5I, gunned the pitch, and missed the putt coming back. Virtually every GIR was 30 feet and in - it's not like he had 60-foot birdie putts. He just didn't make any. Not a one. 30 or 31 GIR over 36 holes and two birdie putts...

This might sound weird, but keep reading... AimPoint was a tremendous help. We didn't misread a putt (and most of our "reads" took 15 seconds, tops) the entire time. Dave didn't mis-stroke any. We just didn't get the break on any of them. AimPoint is great in that you don't even have to look at the green. We had our maps, we knew the percentages, etc. The only "problem" arises when you take something as a 2.5% slope and it's a 2.65% slope. It's enough to miss by an inch, which is all that was necessary here:

We lipped out more than I've seen anyone lip out in 36 holes. If we could buy a foot to use on putts as they approached the hole, Dave would be co-holder of the course record with the guy who shot 63 today. Never mind what he'd have shot the first day...

Last bit on AimPoint: it was painfully obvious when the guys we played with would misread putts. On one they both thought they had a straight putt but we knew the zero line was well to their left (uphill putts). They both missed low/left.

On another putt, the guy in our group needed to hole a 10-footer on the final hole to make the cut. He played the putt to break right but failed to notice that the slope at the hole went a different way (the mounding off the greenside bunker was deceiving). He missed it to the left as well because he didn't notice that the zero line had curved. He had a straight-aim putt. It hurt to watch. I was tempted to say something to Dave a little louder than I normally would about how the green sloped left there... :-P

Anyway, Dave played really well. You don't hit 30 greens and play badly... we just couldn't buy a putt. Just a bunch of edges.

No Cigar?  Really?

Oh... I know I'm getting your $100 at end of this year.. so I let this one go.

Anyway, 146 is not bad at all. :)
