Depends what you are doing at the range. If it's just aimlessly hitting balls without actually trying to improve the swing flaws then you might as well be out on the course.

I try to get to the range at least 3 times per week and play at least once.  Ideally, I'd like 4 ranges days and 2 course days but that would get expensive with green fees, divorce attorney fees, child support and alimony.

I voted once range and twice on the course.  I like going to the range sometimes but I feel like I get better practice on the course and I enjoy it a lot more.

I voted other because it really matters where you are in your game.  There are some that are making major swing changes and trying to ingrain certain feels and for those players more range time vs. playing time would be beneficial.  Others, however, would improve more by improving their course management which can only be done on the course.

I never go to the range........... I haven't hit buckets since 1995, but it depends on your situation.....

If you really want to get better, you'll need to beat a lot of balls one way or another.  Me...I've always had an annual playing pass, so going to the range was never a consideration for me.  I get free range balls and I still never hit buckets.  Why hit buckets when you can play?  ....even if it's just a few holes, I'd rather play.

At the very least, you'll need to play twice a week to get better if 'playing' is your thing.....

me...I like to PLAY!

I am 60 yr's old and started golf 3 yr ago.  As you would guess, I started by just slapping balls on range and playing rounds.  With this came depression, because I did not understand what prat ice was.  I now understand the swing, so when I am on the range, which I go to every day unless sick, or weather, and playing every other day.  I know exactly what I want to practice on each and every visit.

I really groove in my swing flaws at the range. I do practise putting and chipping a couple times a week though.

I voted play 2 times and range 1, but I'd also add a short game session in there too.  I play more like 3 or 4 times a week and range maybe once, and definitely a short game session at least once a week.  I use the range to just gather my thoughts on how I'm hitting the ball and make minor swing adjustments, because I just don't like hitting at the range too much.  The short game is important to me though, so I take a lot of time with that.  But, for me, playing is the best way to get better, because it's putting everything at work, not just one portion of your game.

Out of the first 3 choices, definitely go play two rounds and go to the range once. But I would say that for me, going out for 3 rounds of golf, to the range twice, and practice putting every day helps improve my game the most.

I don't go to the range either. I play every Sunday, year round, and an occasional Sat.

The swing is what it is, and I'm satisfied with my current level of play. Yes, I'd like to break par more often, but it isn't a priority.

BK (Before Kids) - I found that playing once a week, then have two good days at the range really kept me on my game and in touch with my swing.  Because I worked so close to the course I would putt at lunch, then I really started seeing the results.

I've been golfing a ton this summer, but haven't been to the range much. Ideally for me, I'd like to get to the range at least once a week, which I haven't been doing.

I play at least once a week and practice putting for about 3 hours and my short game for about 2 hours each week.  My short game practice is hitting balls from dirt, hardpan lies distances of 60 yards and in.

Others.  Play 1 a week and practice shortgame and putting on the practice green 2-3 times per week.

Since I don't do range ever, I picked #1.  However, I don't really think that anything would do much to change my game right now.  My game is what it is, and since I"m in my mid 60's, it will likely remain so.  I have played some decent golf over the last month by doing nothing but play.  3 of my last 7 rounds have been 79, 81, and 83.  However, a couple of rounds on more difficult courses broke into the low 90's, but I think that was partly because I just tried to play too much, going 5 days in a row in 4 different towns.

Now I'm laid up having just had my right knee scoped, so I'm off the course for at least 3 weeks.  I don't expect that to change my game any either.

And when do you practice your full swing? Actually practice it, with drills, possibly filming, etc.?

To answer the question I spend the majority of my time on the full swing. If it's in place I'm virtually guaranteed to shoot par at the worst when I play. The short game and putting I'll mess with once in awhile but it's simple enough that on good days and with good luck I'll shoot 65 and on bad days par as I said. If my full swing is off then 72 is a good day!

    • I cannot supply scientific data on the old fashioned knee action.  I have only anecdotal support for it. In my own game focusing on pressure shift in the feet is not a feel that's effective.  Last time out I was not at my best and part of it was focusing on my legs for maybe ten holes probably due in part to this thread.  I was beat down hard by the golfing gods.  They even took away my putting also but threw in good chipping to further screw with me haha! Sadly,  I can only admit I am not as athletic as those golfers with that hyperactive left knee.  It's my theory that this active knee motion contributed something to their action,  perhaps helping their sequencing or power or possibly protecting the spine,  but I can't put forth a good argument based on solid evidence.   The shots of Nicklaus above are fascinating.  It's hard to believe they did that with that unforgiving equipment. Photos like the ones of Nicklaus and Wright are just amazing to me to look at.  How the heck were they able to be so dynamic looking and still crush a tiny headed persimmon driver with a tiny sweet spot/clubface?  It truly boggles my mind.  
    • It's now 8 months since I started playing golf.  I'm fairly happy with the progress I've made so far... ...I've (mostly) got past the impulse to try and whack the ball really hard ...I've (mostly) learned not to overswing and start standing up in the backswing ...I get the concept of the hips starting the downswing rather than the arms, and can see how this causes the club head to rocket through at the bottom of the swing AND I seem to end in a good finish position ...that said, I have also learnt to move my hips at a moderate pace rather than too fast, as that was making me slice it - confused me for a bit but I get it now ...fat shots are now a rarity rather than a constant plague - tend to now only occur on uneven lies but not too often ...I'm not yet as consistent as I would like to be, but I hit the ball cleanish and straight most of the time ...chipping and putting is reasonable compared with my playing partners ...I would expect to get 4 or 5 pars in a round, and mentally before each hole I tell myself a bogey is ok so better to be short of the green with a controlled swing than in trouble with a wild one.  A double bogey or worse is now a disappointment however. I am also starting to get a reasonably good idea of my distances for each club.  What I have noticed, however, is that my distances are much shorter than my friends.  I can hit straight drives about 210 yards, a straight 4 iron about 150 yards, a 7 iron about 120 yards.  Now, I'm ok with this, I'm not bothered about outdriving them or being a big hitter - I know that trying to match them club for club will not end well for me. My question is, will my distances increase as my swing develops and gets more consistent?  Looking at some of the swing speed charts online - for what they're worth - maybe my driver swing speed is around 80mph for those distances?  My irons are Callaway X-16 with new Dynamic Gold R300 shafts.  Are these a heavier shaft, and would I see an improvement with different shafts?  I've no intention of changing them just now, but have my 40th birthday next year so a new set might be on the cards then. I'm really enjoying my golf at the moment, and am quite content with my progress, but the desire to improve is very strong - I guess this happens to a lot of new golfers.  How might I expect things to go from here on?  I've been working it out by myself and with the help of YouTube videos and books, and lessons are not an option - the nearest pro is two hours away.     • Umm, the penalty he took is directly related to that. It would be strange not to emphasize the reason why he took the penalty. 
    • Does anyone have a picture of the pin chart for this course? It's usually on the back of the carts but I can't find it online.  Thanks.
