Time to bare my soul.

To be honest, I don't want to play ProV1 balls because I want to be different. I can make up stuff about the performance of this ball vs that ball. The truth is, I hate playing a ball that so many guys play simply because the pros play it. I know there are those on this site that play ProV1 balls because they notice a difference. But we all know most guys who play them do not have the game to notice one ball vs another and they play ProV's because the are the ball played by their heros on TV. Other guys want to play Tiger's ball even though the only thing they have in common with TW is that they'd both like to have sex with supermodels.

I've been playing Taylormade since they first launched. Remember the plastic sleeves? I played them because no one else did. They were rotten balls but they were my rotten balls. Β After a stint with Callaway (until they became too popular) I went to the newer versions of TM when they became good balls. I played Blacks, Reds, and I've played Pentas since they were introduced.

My problem is that I will play a ProV1 when I find one or someone gives me a sleeve with their logo. I played one from the 5th hole on today. I wanted to play a high-risk shot and did not want to risk one of my TM balls. And darn it, that ProV1 putted great. It felt good off my short irons. My game is not consistent enough to judge actual distance with woods and spin around the green. But I really like the way the ProV1 felt and even dropped a Penta a few times to compare head to head approach shots. I hate to say it, but I like the ProV1. Ballooned on me once when I hit a hard 9-iron into the wind. Same shot with a Penta flew true. But that could likely be something I did differently from one swing to the next. What I could not get over today was the feel on the greens off my Odyssey White Ice putter insert.

Do I just suck it up and join the masses playing the #1 ball in golf? Or do you have suggestions for balls that will feel as good as a ProV1 but be more unique?

It's a regional thing anyway. Some courses the trees are full of Tour Callys others Tour Nikes or Titleist. Some guys get a hard on for Srixon, and the Wilson Staff FG Tour is solid for slower swing speeds (inho), but they don't do much for me. If I had to choose a top quality ball that was unique and wasn't a Penta, I'd probably go with a Bridgestone B330 (whichever version is the highest compression)

Why don't you just play the ball that best suits your game?

I agree with Iacas.Β  Playing a different ball for the sake of just being different does not make sense to me.

Personally, I prefer Pro V1x as it suits my game better.Β  I tried all the others, but until they make a better ball for my game than Pro V1x, I won't switch just to be different.

I always mark my ball in a unique way to identify it easily.Β  Perhaps, what you need to do is start marking your balls uniquely to distinguish from others, if you are so bent on being different.

Just my 2 cents...

If you want to be different, be different.Β  If you think the Pro V1 plays better, then play it.Β  If it's too expensive, then just play the ones you find.Β  It's just a golf ball, and trust me, nobody else is looking at the label to see what you're playing.

Thanks guys. It is about my feelings/thoughts and not one bit about what my buddies think of my ball. They don't care and I don't care what they think. It is not really about money as I think of a good ball as the cheapest investment one can make playing golf. Since I pick a brand for the season, I buy in volume if I see a deal. I currently put seven lines on my balls plus a little mark under each number so I'm all in on the marking them up so no one confuses their ball with mine. I guess I'll have a winter to figure it out. I'll try putting some different brands -- Bridgestone, Srixon and others -- and see what feels best. If it is a ProV1, then I'll join the masses.

You say you don't want to play the ProV1 because you want to be different, but you also don't care what anyone else thinks. What does it matter being different if you don't care what anyone else thinks? Play the ball that best suits your game and purse. Focus more on the performance, less on whatever logo is stamped on it.

Play the best ball for you... if you happen to find that it is a ProV1 then go with it...

The Srixon and Bridgestone balls are a little more unique I guess and you might get similar performance out of them so you might want to give those a look but at the end of the day I'd play the better ball over the "unique" one.

"To be honest, I don't want to play ProV1 balls because I want to be different."

My man!Β I didn't want to buy ProV1's (Yes I play them when REAL money is on the line, but not when small money is on the table) so it took a while to build up my vast trove of experienced balls. I found so many that I started a "ritual". I would play the same ball of whomever won the most current major. I found out that the Wilson Staff, (Thanks Mr. Harrington) plays very well. I have a feeling that you too have a collection of used balls. I suggest you try this "ritual". I hope you try it and let us know how it works out for you.

I wonder if you can order them with "No logos"??? That would be kinda cool… Just play a completely blank ball. Only you would know what you're playing.

I doubt you could get them without the Titleist logo but you could use white paint or white out to cover the logo up.Β  I'm not sure I fullyΒ understand what the OP'ers issue is, but ifΒ cost nor his buddies opinions are an issue and he hits that ball the best then I don't know whyΒ it bothers him that the majority of hackers and pro'sΒ all use it.

Doesn't want to use a ProV1.

Wants to use a ProV1.

Doesn't want people to think he's using a ProV1.

Wants people to think he knows they think he's using a ProV1.

Wants people to know he doesn't want them to think he's using a ProV1.

Maybe you can buy a Rumsfeld branded golf ball.

Meanwhile.........most of us are just playing golf.........

The answer is Range (Ron-zhay) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIR3oCQMQBE&feature;=youtube_gdata_player Cool stripes... I fell in live with the Pro V and found a great place locally to get them mint for 15 a dozen (definitely a step up from the Gamer v2s I was playing). Last weekend I won 2 dozen Pro Vx in a tournament and almost traded them for the V, but decided to try them. I actually think they are better suited for my game with a 77 on the first round. We shall see and it is the ball Paddy plays. Finding the right ball should be a balance between what you need and what you can afford.
