Whats your "go to" wedge for green side chipping ??

I'm not talking specialty shots where you have to hit over traps, tight lies, or even long flat approaches .... just the wedge you reach for the majority of the time when a short approach shot is called for near the green ?       I like my 54° Wilson Staff wedge ... enough loft to land soft, but easily controllable (use if for probably 90% of green side short chips from the rough).    Curious what is everybodys most trusted green side wedge - thx

I use Pelz's 3x4 system.  I think it is fantastic.  I have a similar system for chipping.  The backswing length and stroke is constant, but I just switch clubs.  My 60 rolls out 14 feet, my 7 iron close to 68 feet.  I can't chip or pitch well under pressure relying on feel.  Not saying its for everyone, but I find a mechanical approach (same swing, different club) is more consistent.

But most pros don't do it this way so it probably isn't the best.

If I had to pick, I'd say a Cleveland CG15 60/12.

Of course, it depends on the situation - when I want to keep it low and roll - it's a 55/56. When I want it up and stopping, the 59.

Interesting responses so far ... the main reason I began this thread was I'm torn between trying to keep it fairly low with my 50 (which I find a tad easier to control, but tend to miss way long when I miss), or lofting it a bit with the 54 (which more often than not comes up short).     Seems the vast majority here uses higher lofted clubs for average chip shots, so I guess I'll stay with the 54 & learn to hit it confidently...

For me, it always depends on the situation.  For a routine 2:1 roll/fly ratio, that's a pitching wedge. Using the same ratio going uphill, it might become a 9-iron.  If it's uphill AND against the grain, it might become an 8-iron. A 3:1 ratio means a 9 iron for a standard shot, etc.  The good old Rule of 12.

PW.  Im not sure why anyone would want to use a 58* or 60* to try to hit a low, running shot which is what a chip is supposed to be.

Courses I play at are typically very firm. So I prefer hitting higher shots that will land soft opposed to lower shots with roll. So the majority of my shots around the green are done with my Scratch 8620 S/S 60*. Great spin off the wedge so the ball sits very nicely on approach shots.

I generally use my 56, I have a very old and oversized sand wedge at the moment, and it's fantastic for popping the ball to 6-10 feet and getting it to release just a bit. Though my irons are very forgiving on full shots and from left to right, the wedge is so chunky and flat soled that it hits straight and high with little spin. I'm replacing it with a blade SW for more spin, and learning to use my gap wedge to chip and run.

If it's uphill, a hard lie, or the whim strikes me, I'll use as much as a 7i, but I'd seldom take any more club on a partial shot; It's too hard to launch long clubs without hitting them pretty solid.

Anything more than 30 feet and I prefer to hit a pitch. My yard is about that size, so I have a lot of practice and control at that range. I subscribe to the idea that hitting any shot with your favorite club is usually better than having a method and varying clubs; I like my SW, and I use it for anything within 70 yards. If a 9i is a go to club for you, you'll trust it more.

It has the advantage of helping you adapt to green speed and slope, and can help you take a club out of the bag.

I use my 50 but only because my 54 scares me with the amount of bounce it has greenside. The 50 seems to be far more consistent and I thin the shot far less. Could all be psychological however. ;)

Depends on the setup. Some irons are better suited to chipping than others. When I play Clevelands (TA1 or TA3) or Ben Hogans, then I use the 8 and 9 iron a lot. The 53/58 and 54/60 combos I use with those set are decent for all shots, but not much better for "green side chipping" than the irons from the set.

When I have my old Mizunos in the bag, I put in a matching Mizuno Pro 53/58 or 53/60 combo and the 53 (bent from 52) is like a magic wand around the green. I can add a bit more spin for faster greens or hit with a ton of release for my usual course.

My "best" chipping rounds in the past couple years were rounds using the short irons from my Hogan Apex PCs and rounds using my Mizuno Pro wedges.
