Hey guys,

Just recently added a wedge to my bag and took out my 5 wood. Does anyone hit a 5 wood these days? I use to love mine, but thought the extra wedge would be more helpful. Just wondering how many woods you guys carry these days?

- RLM

Yeah, I do not hit a 3 or 4 wood consistently well or high enough at the moment. So I play a Ti 5 wood ... at the moment.

I agree with you.  I have a 17 deg 4w and a 22 deg hybrid, then start my irons at the 4i, so I can get in an extra wedge.  I have 4 wedges:  46, 50, 54, 58.

Used to carry a 5w, but don't have the room for it.     Now, I choke up a bit on a 3w or use the 3h ...

Right now I am still using a 5 wood choked up instead of a hybrid. I just can not seem to find a hybrid that I like.

I don't use a four wedge set up anymore.  I use three wedges that are spaced 6* apart.  It is much easier for me to take a little off a wedge than it is to manipulate a swing with a longer club.  All that to say that I do use a 5 wood.  I'll swap it out with a #2 hybrid some but I'll have one or the other in the bag at all times.

I use 4 wedges and a 3 and 5 wood.  This configuration leaves me a gap between about 195 and 220 yards.  So far I just try to avoid those yardages but sometimes you can't.  So I have been considering a 3 iron (hybrid) as now the largest I have is a 4.  I would like to get a strong 4 wood (for those days I can't keep the driver under control), take out the 3 & 5 woods.  I think this might help me at these yardages.  But I wouldn't give up one of my wedges as I use them all much more than I find myself at these problem yardages.  I don't think there is a club set up that doesn't leave you some "awkward yardages" that require you really hit the short club hard or take something off the longer club.

I'd use a 3-wood if I were more consistent with it. I use a 5-wood instead.

...and only 3 wedges... (PW, 52, and 56)

...and I usually carry only 12  clubs...

I sometimes add the 3-wood or a 3-hybrid in.

I ditched the 3wood & 5wood for a 16.5* 4 wood. Best of both worlds as the 4 wood is a lot easier to hit off the deck than the 3 wood and I can choke down an inch or so if I need to take something off it. .

In a lot of the club fittings I do, golfers hit a 5 wood just as far as a 3 wood.  Also, they hit it more accurate (left and right) and they are more consistent with overall yardage.

That's exactly why I have one in my bag.  I love my little 5 wood.  I tried a couple of hybrids, but they seemed to be more work than not (I repeatedly sliced the heck out them, when my misses are usually left with every other club).  I have hit some decent shots with the hybrids, but they aren't as confidence inspiring as the 5 wood for me.  I plan on re-shafting one for my kids, and my wife loves the 3H, so I guess it wasn't a total waste.  Maybe it's just my faulty swing, but I find it easier to loft the ball off the deck with the 5 than with the hybrids, so in the bag it stays.

I still carry a 5 wood and a 7 wood. I only have one wedge a 56* that I have learned to manipulate from 5yds off to 70yds. I want to soon switch to a 3 wedge setup with a Driver, 4 Wood and 7 Wood.

I used to carry a 5 wood but I had a large distance gap between by PW and 56* Wedge so I decided to add a GW and pull out the 5 wood, which I didn't use as much. I now just choke up on my 3 wood.

Best Regards,
Ryan

I love 5 woods. I've had one in my bag for several years now and I love them. Most people I see put a hybrid in its spot instead, but I've preferred my irons and fairway woods over hybrids.

I've been much more confident since changing the top of my bag around to include a 5W

12* driver, 18* fairway, 23* hybrid is my top end now.

My 5W is a consistent 205-215 yards off the tee and I give up 10 yards or so off the deck. The extra loft and shorter shaft makes it a lot more forgiving than my 3W ever was and I'm not giving up a huge amount of distance really. My driver is good for about 250y if I catch it well but honestly it's much more usually in the 230 range and that is a fine distance gap for me. Occassionally I get caught out on a dogleg or something that will leave me short with 5W or long with driver. I try to just accept that now and use some of my prodigious handicap to play that hole for a bogey

I carry a Driver, 3W, and a 19* TM Raylor as a 5W. For time being, I drop out 4i and carry 4 wedges.

I have considered adding a 22* Raylor. The Raylors carry longer than comparable hybrids.

I sometimes talk to a local mini-tour player who practices at my home course. He said that m-t long-ball hitters tend to go with 4 wedges, while the medium hitters tend to go with 3 wedges to fit in another long club.

    • I'd find a free fitting, take your clubs, and see what you can see. For example, we have a PXG fitter come to our academy every Tuesday, and he's great about sharing info about why he's having you hit a certain shaft or clubhead or something. And… if you don't see much of a change, skip it.
    • Day 1 (3 Apr 25) - Restarting the routine after a 4 day quick trip.  Got back in the groove today for some swings of the 6i and driver into the net -‘to just warm the muscles a little.  Wrapped up the day with grandson hitting 20-25 yd pitches in the backyard.  Love watching his swing and also his concept of course management, to hear him say he left himself in a good position to finish (good words from a soon to be 9 yr old)….
    • Day 185 - 2025-04-03 Had a good 2.5 hour session at Golf Evolution. Kinda glad it was still wet and windy out today as I wouldn't have gotten such a good session in if I played. Got up to 93 MPH (with a pause) on my 6I and 130 MPH ball speed (on a different slightly slower hit, a bit more de-lofted than I'll want eventually).
    • I'm highly probable for the entire weekend, thanks for doing the hard work to set it up.  I can't wait for more details.
    • I take 2nd, is a confirmation that you can eventually win your major and also is good material for having a laugh about it in the distant future.
