I was asked a question. I'm done talking about it if everyone else is. I even specifically waited awhile before I answered. Sorry. I don't stand to make anything from sharing what I know about putting and fitting. None of you live close enough to come see me for a fitting. I share what I know because I hope it helps people get the most out of their game and have a better time playing golf.

The title of the thread is "shopping for a new putter"--why should it just be limited to the OP's question?  I appreciate Erik's input, as I'm sure others do.  I am intrigued, to say the least.  Are there any Edel fitters in Hawaii?  If not, are you planning a vacation out here any time soon and want to expense part of it?

As I said, I think I'm a good putter, and I think I'm pretty good at hitting my lines (aside of the inevitable days when my stroke is off).  I know that I don't read greens consistently well.  If that's because I'm not actually hitting my lines, then that would be very valuable information.

Okay, sorry, most of you don't live near Erie, PA. Greg, looking forward to it. Spend the day, hit some shots, chip some balls. You'll have a blast. Just let me know what time works for you.

I think the reason we talk Edel is because they actually discuss and have a method for custom fitting, and we are the beneficiaries of having an Edel fitter on this site; whereas the OEMs and other putter makers tend not to educate. Ignorance means you spend money on a lot of putters trying to find the "one." Of course, Ping has begun talking more with their iPutt (?) app for arch and giving you a choice of putters that match an arc - but still, that's rather primitive.

The point being, the OEM's, makers, and resellers have not shown they want you to think outside the box when buying a putter; neither have they shown that they understand how to fit you into a putter. Not even Cameron.

I hear the same from big box stores, "It's all about feel and what looks good to you. You like it, you putt well with it."

Yeah....

One of the more frustrating things that has happened when I was looking for a new putter (this was before I knew about Edel... now that I'm out of school and have a real job, my next putter purchase will almost certainly be an Edel) was demo day representatives asking me how big the putter I used at the moment was -- it was 35", which I'll assert isn't the right length for me. Then they'd suggest that that's the right one for me, since it's what I'm using (I have similar difficulty at many OEM driver "fitting" days).

question - maybe Erik can chime in.

i really like the way my putter feels, looks, etc.

i want to see how well or poorly i aim it.  can i buy one of those laser putter alignment things that you attach to the putter face to see how i am aiming?  are they an accurate assessment?

secondly, i have one of those jumbo grips.  i love it.  does the putter fitting allow for that?

I like the "not even Cameron" part. Around here they're pretty much the same as any other mass produced OEM putter, just more exensive for their entry level models.

Um, that would be because Cameron doesn't have entry level models. To get anyone else's (Ping, Odyssey, etc...) equivalent, you have to buy from their premnium line which costs around the same as a Cameron.

Not worded correctly on my part - their least expensive models are still expensive. A price point not necessarily justified by any additional service or quality.

I personally have no issue with their prices and they're still relatively inexpensive compared to other consumer purchases. Price out hifi or home theatre equipment and you can get price jumps of the price of a Scotty Cameron in the blink of an eye. When you're spending $4000, what's another $275 here or there?!?

Go here:  http://www.seemore.com/products/category/accessories/

and get the Triangulator - it does the same thing as a laser - but you will need a friend to help you.

The problem with putters like that is that it'll affect your aim - attaching something to your putter like that. The best thing is to do the check just like an Edel fitting: attach a small mirror to your putter, bounce a laser off it, and see where the laser points. Back at itself or left or right? You want your putter to look the most like your putter - without crap hanging or stuck to it - as possible.
