The Best (worst) Spelling and Grammar Errors Thread

Writing and reading other people's writing probably consumes 80% of my work-day and I rarely come across someone who uses one space.  I like the idea of one space though, and I'd switch if I were permitted to do so.  But at the same time it seems silly to say that two is wrong when so many people do it.  If "literal" can have two definitions that are the exact opposite of each other, there's room in this world for one-spacers and two-spacers.

Right.  That is kind of how I feel.  If one space was correct, I'd happily switch.  But it sounds to me like one space is no more correct than "colour" is correct.  It's one way, but there is another, and both work just fine.  Until the author can tell me exactly how many extra nanoseconds people pause after that extra space, and then tell me how that will ruin the flow of the writing, then I'll probably just continue to go ahead and use two spaces.  Since it's an ingrained habit anyway.

Broseph, you missed a comma there! It's always good to be extra fastidious when calling out an erroneous post!

I was taught it was optional as well.

Tehehe ... there are commas between Ernie's butt!

Commas, are, optional?

Not optional, situational. If the words following the "but" form a complete sentence then a comma is appropriate.

Examples:

  • I thought I lost my ball but, I found it.

  • I thought I lost my ball but eventually found it.

You sure?  That does not look right to me.

It seems to me like the pause should come before the but.

I thought I lost my ball, but I found it.

P.S.  You are full of ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I saw you drop that one out of your pocket, you flippin' cheater!!!!!!!!!!! :-P

Not 100% sure, fairly certain though. See how I avoided the "but" altogether there. ;-) Maybe one of our resident grammar police can clear this up?

Defiantly work on this! I feelt as though it was a bit rushed when I watched it aswell

Paging @mackingchicken - the word is "definitely." Not "defiantly." People are going to judge you based on these kinds of things (right or wrong, but all things equal, you'd rather not be judged poorly because of spelling, right?). You'll do yourself a favor if you learn these things earlier on… :)

    • Yep.  If a vehicle is even moving at 25 mph, that covers 37-FT in one second, or 10 yards in one second. It is highly probable that Scottie didn't have time to react, and ended up driving further than what the cop probably deemed acceptable and thought Scottie was trying to run him over.  The fact is, the cop should not have put themselves in that position to begin with.  Edit. I didn't even calculate the stop distance needed (when Scottie hits the brakes). That 10 yards is if he never slowed down. Human reaction time is about .25 seconds, maybe longer when it is 5AM.
    • I read this story yesterday about Scottie, interesting to read something a little different than the standard coverage about him. If you have NYT or Athletic access.  Scottie Scheffler’s secret: How a ‘venomous’ trash talker became the best golfer in the world Scheffler has worked to tame his inner competitive fire but those who've seen it up close have...
    • His recognition factor may be even lower if he has to play in that orange jumpsuit. May be mistaken for Rickie Fowler.😉
    • Reports are saying the officer jumped onto his car. So he assaulted the officer with his car, that the officer voluntarily jumped on top of.
