Heat question - leaving clubs in the trunk - probably not a good thing, huh?

No way. They use a super-duper glue. All club makers complain that Pings are a tough pull.

Must have been the heat or some other "incident."

I park in a cement garage at work, and it rarely gets above 85* inside. So, my clubs are usually in the trunk.

Over the summer, high outdoor heat might deteriorate the grips and leather shoes. Heat used to dry out old wound-rubber balls - not sure about modern ones.

Yes, sometimes even Ping (and Titleist, Mizuno, Wilson Staff, TM, Callaway, etc etc) make mistakes when puttinmg a club together. Heat from a trunk will not affect the glue that is used (as a matter of fact, the ONLY warning on the glue they use is extreme cold (I believe it was -20 celsius on the bottle of glue I bought), because it can freeze the thin layer of glue and make it brittle, and its also why we use to use special glue for the blades on our two piece sticks back in the day, because regular glue wouldn't hold the blade. . But there is definitely no problem with the heat a car trunk makes. Hell, it only gets up to 45-50 celsius on the worst summer days. That is nowhere near hot enough to affect the glue in your clubs, period.

Just to be safe I pack my club in a cooler with dry ice to keep them cool. :-P I have never heard of heat being a factor in a head flying off on the course. I have worked at clubs and this just doesn't happen. If you leave your shoes in your car, use mink oil or a leather conditioner frequently to keep them supple..

That would be UV damage, not heat damage. Not much UV light in a trunk.

When I took my clubs in to get them regripped (Ping Zings nearly 20 years ago) the guy did a quick count and asked me if I forgot my nine iron.  When I told him what happened, he asked me if I kept my clubs in the trunk, and then told me that given the heat and humidity in Florida, it wasn't a good idea.  He told me that everyone that ever brought him a head to be reattached to the shaft (most of them didn't go into a pond) admitted that they kept their clubs in the trunk.  He said that he figured it was cumulative effect of heating and cooling that caused the glue to weaken over time.  He also told me that I wasn't doing my grips any favors either.

I stopped keeping my clubs in the trunk and haven't had any issues ever since.

Wishon says temperatures in excess of 200 degrees can cause the epoxy attaching the heads to break down.  This is over time.  But it can happen.  Also I think it can cause the ferrules to separate from the heads and slide up the shafts.  Not a big deal but annoying to look at.  Easily fixable though.

You are aware that this doesn't necessarilly link the two? Does the guy ask everyone who comes in with clubs still connected if they keep them in the trunk? This conclusion has no standing. If you only ask the people who broke clubs ya maybe most of them kept them in their cars but there are many more people here posting that they keep their clubs in their trunk with no problems. clubs in trunk causing problems is well in the minority on this one.

I bring my clubs in from the car most of the time when I bring them home. Not because I think anything will happen to them by being in a hot trunk because it won't. I don't like to leave them in the car in the winter though, not because of the clubs, but because extreme cold does effect the performance of a golf ball.

the only damage I'd expect would be to the club grips and rubber components in your bag.

My 1st set of clubs lasted about 10 yrs. Most of those yrs. they stayed in the trunk of my Camaro if not in use and I didn't play every week back then. One day I hit my PW and felt something hit me in the back.I turned and looked around and saw nothing....no body, no ball, nothing. My partner came up and said "it's your shaft ."  It had broken apart up in the grip and the clubhead hit me in the back. The club still looked good until U put leverage on it, then it would bend in the grip.

Soooooooooo.........the yrs of humidity, I guess, had gotten in and rusted the inside of my shafts. After cutting them apart, most all of them showed some rust on the inside.

After I started paying for equipment, I started keeping them in the garage, but now they  do find in my SUV.

It's been 100 almost constantly lately, and I can't speak for all trunks, but my trunk stays very cool even on those really hot days. I have spray sunscreen I leave in the trunk before a round of golf and assume it will burn the shit out of me when I grab the metal can but it's always cool and on top of that it sprays out that refreshing cool mist of sunscreen.

Yes... I am ****ing aware that it doesn't necessarily link the two.  Obviously it wasn't a 'scientific' study, but rather an 'anecdotal' source of information, and I sincerely apologize for forcing you to waste your valuable time on the internet pointing out and correcting such a grievous error in judgment on my part.

Seriously though, my old Accord (that I used to haul clubs around in twenty years ago) had no insulation whatsoever in the trunk, so it was like a blast furnace when you opened it in the summer.

Caddies don't do real well in the trunk either. They tend to dry out. I would think that if you change your grips on a regular basis the effect of heat from the trunk would be minimal.
