I can relate.  Last time Lisa and I went to the range facility near us we were there all of 10 minutes before 5 young "kids" (in their early 20s at most?) arrived (rather loudly), picked 5 stalls near us, pulled out their drivers, and immediately began their version of a long driving competition, grunting loudly with each shot, yelling at each other after their shots, and generally not showing any consideration to any of the other golfers who were there actually trying to improve their game.  Even when they weren't yelling during my swing it had an effect because the ANTICIPATION of the yells and shouts was almost more of a distraction than the sounds themselves.

I completely agree with the bolded part, but I do still disagree with the first paragraph. In baseball games, several (dozens?) of cameras follow the baseball from all different angles as it goes towards the stands. All of the cameras in golf are focused on the ball and the player, and there's really no way from that to pinpoint sound. Baseball crowds are also static, while golf fans move around constantly. Don't get me wrong, I hate the stupid shouting as much as anyone, I just don't think the current infrastructure could do much to stop it.

First time I heard "Mashed Potatoe" was at an aussie tournament, second at a forgotten euro tourney. Last US Open had only "In the hole" yells.. To say Americans are the only ones to yell is simply retarded. Most were drunk fans and nobody cared. What pissed me off was all the cell phones that got past beeping metal detectors because security doesn't give a shit...

I actually heard somebody say "mashed potatoes" at the D bank this weekend. It sounded way more stupid than I imagined. I don't get it at all.

I know the one you are talking about. It was the only thing I heard. My kids in the other room even perked up and my son said, "Who got Mashed Potatoed?" I think it was Dustin when he hit the little flare on the par 3. It was a total misuse of Mashed Potatoes. Even the seasoned shouters should shun him. What a newb.

I thought that it was odd they said it on a par 3. I heard some women laughing (at him?) after he said it. Unfortunately I don't see a way to stop this. I guess you could limit the crowd to only clapping and no yelling what so ever. Somebody would just figure out how to be an annoying clapper.

For all of you who say it can not be stopped, do you think it would be stopped if the yelling was at the top of a backswing? How about if the yelling was vulgar and not allowed to be aired on TV? Do you really think they would just close off the microphones and let fans, visitors, patrons yell during a players swing? Or shout obscenities?

IMO, it would stop "instantly." It does not stop because it is "not that bad" yet according to the people in charge of events and the TV coverage.

They do it at players swings or prep now. People will just dismiss is to an accidental noise or whatever.

I've got an idea.  When some yahoo makes an *ss of himself, an official approaches and asks for photo ID - name and city of residence.  This information is then relayed to the TV commentators and we all get to find out who the idiot is, along with an action replay.  Of course there would need to be convincing video evidence taken by a discrete roving cameraman.

If you don't comply with the request, off the course you go ......

I wish we could have done that.  Might be something I start doing when I go to the range myself.  Wouldn't really work when I'm trying to help Lisa with her swing, though.

If the PGA continues to allow it on the tour, it just makes them look bad when virtually every other sport has managed to deal with similar issues effectively.  And with all the camera angles, I'm betting it wouldn't be that difficult to spot the trouble-makers.

People do it because they want exposure.

You stop the exposure (turn off the mics after impact) and the shouting will eventually stop.

Or, people can just choose to ignore it. I agree that its not funny, meant only to get yourself heard on tv, mildly annoying, and that the people that do it generally are not people I would choose to associate with.  But come on, on the list of things worthy of getting your panties in a knot over, someone shouting "mashed potatoes" after Tiger Woods hits a ball should be pretty low.  Does it really stop you from enjoying the tournament or appreciating the golfer's shot/swing, when you hear that on your television?

I dont think any other sports deal with similar issues.  Its not the same as someone running on the field at a baseball or football game--that actually affects play.  This about what you think "should" be said at a golf tournament and whether people should be banned for yelling something that you find annoying.
