Prior to about 14 months ago, I had never (that I know of) played a course designed by one of these "marquee" guys.**  But since last November I've played a couple of Tom Fazio courses, a Nicklaus course, an RTJ Jr and an RTJ Sr. course.  Now I finally have an appreciation for "good" golf course design.  Of those, I think the one I played yesterday was my favorite design (RTJ Sr.) followed by the RTJ Jr. designed course.  I still have yet to play a Donald Ross or Pete Dye course.

** Well, I had played Torrey Pines since it was redesigned for the US Open in 2001-ish by Rees Jones, but he only tinkered with a couple holes, really, so I don't think that counts.

HAHA, I know. That and his greens are almost always elevated and domed shape. Meaning you hardly catch an edge of the green on his courses. False fronts are evil. Just play with your eye, and then you watch in horror as your ball slowly rolls off the green.

I'm a huge fan of the old "country club style" courses: small elevated greens, false fronts, tree lined fairways, etc. A.W. Tillinghast is one of my favorite classic designers. RTJ also has some really great ones, as does Fazio, but I guess he wouldn't really be considered a classic designer, per se. I don't think I've played a Pete Dye course (yet).

Probably one of my favorite course designers. If I had to describe Ross's designs, it would be elegant. The courses really do fit the land. He doesn't do much to change what nature gives ya. I also found Ross to be extremely fair with his courses. I never found him to be much of a shot makers course. His greens are always pretty fun to putt though, good slope on them.

Fazio is pretty good, and so is Robert Trent Jones. Depends on the course I am playing for Pete Dye. Sometimes I think he  gets to strict on shot making, and sucks the life out of the round. Honestly I have never been on a Jack Nicholas course that I liked. I am not a fan of his courses.

Who is this???

Is he related to the big bellied, white bearded guy that brings presents?

:-) No, he's the guy who really does all the work in the Jack Nicklaus design/architecture company.

Well, I have decided that I am going to go with the more full membership(Watertown).  My index will probably spike a bit at first but I think I will become a better player overall by playing on this course.  It is a par 70 and plays 6400 from the tips.  Time will tell how much of a pain the drive is going to be in the morning.  The positives are just too much for me not to at least try it this year though.  The price is right and I like the renovations to the course and the conditions.  The junior program for my son is a plus.  The ability to play 7-8 months instead of 5-6 was a big one for me.  It will also be a great excuse to get out more with some of our business partners.  The $400 food and beverage minimum is pretty small as well.

cipher jr. going with the long putter here.  I tried to tell him they won't be legal much longer but he did not listen to me as usual.   Made a decent stroke but pulled it pretty badly to the left.  Probably going to have to fly him out to Erie to work with @iacas on the SAM Puttlab.  These results are not acceptable.   Also I am not sure his method of lining up the putt is legal.

In all honesty had a lot of fun with my little guy at work the other day.  He hung out with me for half the day.  He did tell me to stop looking at golf stuff on the computer and get back to work at one point though(true story).   The kid is a riot.   He is very outgoing and has a ton of charisma, I am not sure where he gets that from.

hi I think your swing is excellent, but wow look at the bow in the shaft at impact, maybe this is affecting your consistency?

It would be easier to answer your question if you quoted the post containing the swing you are referring to.  This thread is several pages long.

But, I will make the assumption that you just looked at the first post, and in that case, I can tell you that the "bow" in the shaft that you are seeing is not actually happening.  Read this thread for details.  :)

Good point!

His clubs just came in today as well.

I think that is the third or fourth time the question has been posed in this thread.  I am just going to start telling people,  "yeah, it is hard to be consistent when you are just so strong."

Here we go.  Finally got to a range this winter.  Not too bad.  I need a little more leg bend at address.  I tend to do that every spring.  Mike helped me fix my posture last year so I know what to do to fix that again.  The hips need some work...but not as bad as I feared.  I really like how the right thumb changes are helping the club position at the top.

Pretty good right here.  When you say "hips need some work", do you want them more open?  I would suggest looking at the right foot first.  To me it's flared out too much, scale it back to 20-25 degrees and it should make that piece easier.

Yeah, I want them more open by impact. When I saw the video I immediately thought of what you said, which was the same thing a couple months ago on the right foot. I am definitely going to add that into the setup next time. I also want to feel more Zach/Arnie extension info the follow through. Thanks Mike!

    • Okay, I'm genuinely curious about this "biodegradable leather" trend in golf. Are we talking snake oil here? I mean, golf balls, clubs... they all end up in the water eventually. Is this just greenwashing, or is there actually a real environmental benefit? And honestly, does it even perform as well as traditional leather? I don't want to sacrifice distance for the planet, you know? Anyone with real-world experience with these eco-friendly golf goods? Spill the tea!
