Well, I wish there was a humorous way to put this, but I'm 32 years old and had a stroke the other day.

Yesterday the doctor gave me the rules, which included 3 months of no golf, (but she did say I could practice putting). Gotta say I'm a little bummed about everything, but at least I'll be able to get back out there this year, however, i'll have a lot of catching up to do. The funny thing is I recently started a thread here ( Winter Practice Blues ) where I was bummed over the lack of progress I'd seen over the course of winter... Now it'll be nicer weather out, and I'll be even further behind, lol. Oh well, at least this way, I'm forced to work on my short game.

Feel free to comment, not looking for sympathy points here. There's only so much you can do in this hospital bed, so figured I'd share some of it with the S.T. community.

Sorry man, that is rough. Hope the prognosis is good for a full recovery!

I had 4 months with a rib cage injury in 2010 when I couldn't make a full swing. Not going to lie, it sucked. But I putted and chipped and read and thought a lot about golf in that time and, looking back now, I would say it was still a productive time.

All the best.

I'm guessing "a one stroke penalty" is not the joke to tell at the moment, huh? Gotta say, having a real stroke must be unbelievably scary. As Woody Allen's character said in Sleeper , "My brain? That's my second favorite organ!" I hope the prognosis is for a full recovery. Best of luck. When I was laid low by a shoulder impingement a while back I kept the Stir Crazies at bay by dragging my Playstation-2 out of retirement and becoming a whiz (again) at "Tiger Woods PGA Tour '08". No gross physical movements required, like a Kinect, et al. It ain't golf, but if your movements are limited (and you ingest enough alcohol) you can almost fool yourself into believing you're at least simulating it. Hang in there. Focus on your recovery and the time will pass. And if you can pick up real clubs in 3 months, that still leaves 5 months give or take to play this season. Not bad, considering!

lol... actually, this is the PRECISE moment for those kinds of jokes... lol.

I'll be honest, I'm more scared about what limitations I'll have moving forward than anything else. I got 4 boys, all of which need and benefit from my active involvement. Just had another talk with the doctor and she seems confident that if healing goes well over the next couple months, that I could be in really good shape for the future. So I appreciate the kind wishes from everyone.

I think I'll take your advice and go buy the new Tiger Woods game, just won't use the Kinect... (that much).

Yeah, I'm a fan of Rotella too. 'Golf is not a game of perfect' is a good one also. And all of Harvey Penicks books (although be careful because some are compilations of the others) and the old standby ... ' Golf my way' by jack Nicklaus.

At least it wasn't stroke AND distance! Now and again we need reminders that health is paramount and the key to our longevity... if not for us than for our families. I feel your frustration. I currently have a torn tendon in my right hand that is even preventing me from practicing. I al leaning toward the broomstick for the season because oddly enough the tear bothers my putting grip more than my swing grip... so I could probably drive right now even though I can't putt. I'm reading the Stockton putting book right now... definitely worth the time!

thanks stretch... ur the man

which of these would you recommend the most? I'll get that one to start with

Jesus. Sorry to hear that. That is some scary stuff, I'm 38 and although I no longer smoke I still probably (definitely) drink too much. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Well Double D, look on the bright side. After three months of putting practice you are going to rip up the course once you are allowed back on to it :)

Hope you get well and have a full recovery.

Dave - hope you have a full and speedy recovery. Maybe try the Mark Frost books - "Greatest Game Ever Played", "The Grand Slam" and "The Match". Great for appreciating the history of the game. I love Frost's abiliy to weave seemingly unconnected tidbits together into a compelling story. Even though I've been golfing for 40+ years I've got a greater insight into the sport than I've ever had.

    • Day 37, June 10.  Today was primarily WFH, so I had several practice sessions (indoors, off a mat, into the net).  At least one each of U, 9, and 6-iron full swings with the usual priority.   I also tried a few times a putting type stroke with my 4H, as something I should probably learn how to hit (and what it does), but the mechanical shot at home off a mat doesn't tell me much of what it's doing.  That's something I should probably try on a real green, not during a round until I've tried it.
    • Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.
    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
