I'll accept it once I understand it. That's the problem. Now I got this visual in my head of a plane on a fricken treadmill :p

As for the wedge. You don't need friction, period. In any golf shot you don't need friction. The only thing that friction causes is backspin, period. As long as your not hitting the ball with the clubface at 90 degrees, and hitting the direct bottom of the ball, the ball will move.

The only equation that matters between two objects colliding is mass x velocity. That's it. There is no friction needed. You could hit a golf ball off the fairway wit a frictionless reaction and cause the ball to go forward. The ball will not travel up the face, it will not have backspin, but it will go forward.

Friction is a force that RESISTS MOTION, that's it. It isn't some magical movement producing machine. Given you need friction to walk. But if your standing still and someone hit in the back, your going to move.

Check out the video from time 2:00 and forward. Notice, ball never touches the club.

I'm surprised that some of the more experienced Sand Trap guys are partaking in this petty quarrel.

I agree. :-P

And to jamo What about gravity and wind resistance?

At the end there I said "additional force." If your airplane can't overcome gravity and air resistance, you've got bigger problems than it getting exercise.
I agree. :-P
I'm in too deep.

The topic very clearly includes "various lays" so in an attempt to steer it back to the topic and off of airplanes

Just going to post this quickly for saeval25 (I like the guy) because the plane drove me ****ing nuts too and this post helped me grok it fully:

Here's another possibility.

Imagine a subway train that was connected to overhead rails with gears of some kind. These powered the train's movement. Beneath the train, it had free-rolling wheels that just held the train up and let it roll freely instead of scraping along the ground.

You could put that thing on a conveyor belt, start turning the gears above to move the train forward, and the conveyor belt could begin moving backwards at whatever rate it wanted and the train would still go forward because the gears above are providing the locomotion, not the free-rolling wheels beneath.

The gears are the plane's engines or propellers.

Back to the topic.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

I actually laughed out loud at this comment. Hahaha.

I don't think there's hope for him...

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
