Is there an iOS/Android app that views/creates/simulates green mappings/diagrams?

I'm surprised no one has created this or I can't find it. You could take photos of existing diagrams, but a simple app to create your own, I think that might be useful.

Once you have a green properly diagrammed, you could drop a pin/ball by tapping on the green, aim it with an arrow, select how hard to hit it and see where it goes. Of course this is a grey area in terms of rules, but great for learning a green beforehand, no?

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

I wouldn't call it a gray area.  Sounds like a good idea though.

  • 5 months later...

A little late to the party, but I was searching for something to help me map the 9 hole course greens I play on 3/4 times a week.

I think once I diagram it out I can really use that information for several things.

1.  decide the best landing spot

2.  know to what degree I really need to aim to get the right read on the break (i.e. figure out the fall line rather quickly)

I might just do it manually since I don't have any other options.

I was also thinking of an iphone app that I could just walk around the green and click in data points that I can later on see on a map and just connect my self, also I can just walk all around the green and maybe this iphone app could actually measure if my elevation is changing or not.  Sounds doable to me, but most likely doesn't exist.

Oh well!

I'm not aware of any apps that do this. My low tech version of this was to print the greens using Google Earth, Mark them up, then scan them and save them on my phone.

That is always an option.. I guess it would depend on how large or detailed they appear when you download them..

That option wouldn't work for me..

Most likely I'll just stick to the manual drawing, and then every time a new pin position is there, draw it up and clearly mark the fall line for it.

I'm going to start tomorrow.. Maybe I'll post my first rough draft.

I'll try to find the pictures I had...I think they're on a memory card in an old phone.  But I printed the maps, then used paint or something to zoom in, essentially getting each green to be 1/2 a page.  Printed it, traced the outline of the green on blank paper, added slope %'s, slope directions, directions, length/width, and took pictures of that.  Sort of like this:  http://johngrahamgolf.com/blog/aimpoint-golf-green-reading-5/

Fall lines aren't all that helpful, IMO, because they are easy to find with your feet and change for each new pin location.

What I would like to do is once I completely fill in each map, have it made into a little laminated book.  I'd rather not have to use my phone at all.

It sounds to me, by USGA rules that this would be illegal. The only function a cellphone is able to allow is to measure distance. That is only if Local Rules allow it. Even then the cell phone or electronic device's app CAN NOT have any other features but measuring distance.

Anyone tried StrackaLine? I'll attach some demo screenshots. First one is the 3D image of a green. This is #17 at Sawgrass: Then you place the pin and ball where you want by dragging your finger. Then you click the putter icon to get info on how to aim your putt. The app comes with only a few demo greens like this, but has an expanding store as they map the green. The app itself is free. I also see Aimpoint has an app. I've seen lotsa talk about the Aimpoint course, but not sure if anyone uses the app as a companion.

If you learn Aimpoint and put in the time to practice it, you won't ever need an app like this. I don't want to sound all "preachy" but it really is that good.

Did they discuss the Aimpoint app at your class? In the description in the Apple App Store, it makes mention of being a way of implementing the course work. Maybe it has the charts you need ? Dunno. It's $24.99 in the store.

Its probably nice, but honestly its not really needed.

Unless you are playing putting games with Erik, then you get ripped for using aimpoint :-P

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
