Is there an optimal way to do this?

I'm going to assume that both of you are joking. Cuz if you're not, you're now both farther away from getting your Stupid Monkey badges (if we were still issuing them) than ever. Stop trying to do other people's drills! Just do what you're given please!

I'm working on my drills. . .as we post, really. . .

I was wondering about this.

Lately, I noticed that my hips turn back centered about the spine on the takeaway, but move forward a little with the start of the downswing.

Good

Should I start the turn first before letting my hips move forward, or wait till A6 before letting them move forward, or should I continue with the way I am already doing it?

Here's a clue, the hips are done going forward by the time they get to A6/6.5.  You should probably continue with what you're doing since you know it's correct.

Is there an optimal way to do this?

Yeah do it the way we talked about in your lessons ;-)

Umm ok, so guys is this operation still on schedule or has there been a change in the plan due to the circumstances and changing conditions..

What operation?-What plan? Kyle's plan seems to be play a lot of golf while TRYING different things and hopeing for a magical fairy pill that will stop him from shooting 102 to let him shoot 72. I give my students the HOW questions all the time-I give them the answers, it's called a practice plan-but this "operation" has no plan. Goals should be achievable and to achieve a drop in handicap you should have a plan.-Without a plan his goals are not achievable.
Umm ok, so guys is this operation still on schedule or has there been a change in the plan due to the circumstances and changing conditions..
Exactly. He seems to think he can sort it out on the course and when it's not reflected in improved scores he bounces to the next quick fix. If anything he is heading in the wrong direction. The scores he is lamenting are bogey golf, his index should be trending up. Can't speak for anyone else but my swing changes take months of regimened practice not days and weeks. He needs to find an instructor.

I think you are over reacting... The only reason for the criticism is because everyone thought you were serious about the operation.. And everyone was rooting for you, but then it became clear that this was more of a dream than a reality and thus the current feedback.. I can tell people want to help, but maybe just outside this specific thread IMO

Kyle, I honestly believe that you are making a poor decision here. The advice you have been given is solid and will help you improve. If people didn't care, they simply wouldn't say anything. I understand that you are getting better and say that you're not looking for a quick fix, but when you say I'll try that and a day or two later you're trying something different it leads people to believe otherwise. I really think you should hang around until at least the So Cal outing and get to meet everybody in person. Obviously it's your choice, but I think that leaving right now is the wrong one.

I was going to say the same thing, also give the 5SK a real try. Take a lesson with Mike, he (and everyone else on this site) would like to see you (and everyone else) improve.

Cound not agree more. @KyleAnthony , the criticism you've received all along should be viewed under the "constructive" category.  As in, if you take it for what its worth, and don't be so easily offended, it's HELPFUL.

Also, I'd ask you to have a little persective of how much help you've been receiving in such a short period of time from several different people.  In just the last month or two, you have started your Operation Scratch and Myswing threads, and combined they have about 300 posts.  If you look at all of the Myswing threads started by new (and some old) members since you started these threads, I am pretty sure that they don't even come close to having the same amount of responses ALL COMBINED as yours do.

People have done nothing but try to help you - not to mention a handful who make their living off of helping golfers get better were HELPING YOU FOR FREE - and if you don't want it, then that's fine, but don't mistake all of the help for criticism.

Whatever about golf, I worry about your business plans. You need to be mentally strong for business. Quite frankly, you're not. Another key is the abilility to listen to people and what they are ACTUALLY saying, not what you like to hear. You're severely lacking in this. Best of luck making the big changes you need to make. And it's a good decision to end the thread, you're not ready for it.

I hope you come back as well - but I hope this thread gets back to what I had hoped to follow.  This thread started as a log about a guy who is all of a sudden going to play a bunch of golf and try to go from 14 to scratch in 8 months.  That is riveting.  And I've been hooked since the start.

What isn't riveting is a million posts about where to put your shoulder and your left hip and where you might get a putter fitting and how some golfer who isn't even you has had problems with different parts of their swing as well.  Boring.  Boring. Boring. These things seem to belong on an instruction thread.

You have peppered the thread with some scores and some stats and what happened during different rounds - which is the main part I like to follow.  Suspiciously absent is handicap updates and a clear charting of the scores since you started on Jan 3.  I'd love to see that.

You are 1/8 of the way to your deadline and I'd love to know what progress has been made.  I hope you come back and finish this out.

Totally off topic and relative to all the practice and plan talk that I wish wasn't in this thread - I heard a quote from Herm Edwards once that I really liked.  "A goal without a plan is just a dream."  Great quote.

You're right that the two threads (this one and the "My Swing" thread) could have been kept a bit more separate, but they're not THAT different. To improve his golf game, he's going to need to improve his golf swing.

Still, this thread, could have been a bit more of a diary than it became, while the actual improvements should have taken place in the other thread.

I'll agree that it's a great quote. I'll disagree that it doesn't belong in this thread. Heck, I think that the main topic of "Operation Scratch 2014" should be not only the updates, but the PLAN itself, and how successful @KyleAnthony is being at sticking to the plan - not only his scores, but how his practice sessions go, etc. The actual mechanics can go in the My Swing thread, but the PLAN and the short-term results (which over time form the long-term results) belong here, IMO.

Right now it doesn't look like it matters, though.

I'll buy that.  The plan is interesting too.  It would be relevant that he had practiced the heck out of chipping for a whole month and we saw the cap drop 3 shots or some equivalent. It would also be interesting to just see how he attacked the project.

It just seemed it got bogged down in the minutia of swing mechanics.  And other golfers swing mechanics.  And unsolicited tips from 14 Handicaps.  And whether or not he was a good listener.  AoA? Putter fittings?? It veered way off course from something that started interesting.  IMO.

It was a bold statement to take on scratch in 8 months.  It seemed we'd have our own little Dan plan.  I didn't think he would actually achieve it, but he might achieve something and it would be interesting to see how it went down.  Something real and quantifiable to follow.

It was a bold statement to take on scratch in 8 months.

You're forgetting where he was going to be hitting 69% GIR, 80% of his fairways, and taking 1.66 putts per hole and that would get him to a 7.9. That was his revised goal. He never commented (IIRC) on the posts that pointed out he would easily be top ten on the PGA Tour with those stats…

Simply put, @KyleAnthony had no actual plan to achieve his "goal(s)." When people tried to help him lay out the plan, he reacted poorly. I should have quit when he called me several names despite others telling him that he was not mistreated, but I stupidly wasted my time and continued to try to set him on SOME path. He's wandering, and he'll die in the desert somewhere. So be it. His grave is entirely of his own making.

P.S. I disagree on the "minutiae of the golf swing" stuff. His priorities were made pretty clear to him. He never wanted to actually practice them properly . He just wanted to "try" them and would report back and then be on to the next.

Ha! Yeah, I remember that.  And like you I don't recall a response.  I think people are often surprised about those stats.  I tried to use some in the bogey golfer thread a while back and they tried to run me out on a rail.

I didn't realized that he had reacted in quite that bad a way.  I skimmed over some of the posts looking for actual scores and such.  I guess you never know how people will react when you try to help.  I would have loved to see the outcome though.  If he was to shave 10 strokes or not a single one, it would have still interested me. It didn't appear had dropped any at the one-month mark.

Got to say I saw this day arriving eventually, The OP just does not seem to grasp how enormously difficult it is to play at scratch level, lots of professionals I know don't play to a zero index just because of the time involved to keep their games that sharp and these guys are at the course everyday and most have been there but because of the job can't devote the time. The criticism was  both constructive and condescending but deserved just the same, the OP should have been more aware that people are going to be skeptics when someone makes this bold of a statement and why couldn't he have just used the 2014 goals thread and have a modest goal but instead wanted to draw all the attention to himself with this ridiculous goal. He started something like 17 different threads all with questions, at first I didn't notice it too much but then it started getting annoying that every damn new thread was started by one person it seemed and it was just the same irrelevant questions, I'm sure Kyle is a nice person and means well but he needs to take information and digest it for a while rather than go on a frantic search for the holy grail of golf.

    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
    • Day 204 (22 Nov 24) - Weekly men’s group round today.  Temps in the upper 40’s, WNW winds 5-15mph - was the old man in the foursome (next youngest is my junior by 10yrs) - held my own against them.  Iron play getting more consistent -seeing predictable ball flights and distances. While the consistency coming around still had sone solid negatives as I had two dbls and one triple. On the plus side - eight pars and one birdie.
    • I don't think anyone will really care.   It's your call.  Just be consistent.
    • I agree, until we are watching the 18th hole in the dark or waiting for the champion to finish and it's been 5+ hours
    • Question for the group. The course I normally play at has 27 holes - 3 9s that they use to for 18 in the various combinations. Is it okay to declare* if I’m playing front or back when I play 9 on this course? I’m figuring I need to declare before I play a shot. *meaning just say to myself that this is the back 9. Curious what people think. Of course, my only holes left are 13 and 17, so I’m going to declare the back 9 for the rest of the year. Probably only one or two more rounds though.
