Tiger Woods Master Catch-All Discussion

His ambitions probably surpass his abilities these days. He can say he's there to win, and of course that's what he wants to do, but his chances are still low all things considered.

Eh. These guys can joke around and still play incredible golf. Tiger won over 80 times because he was the best golfer in the field by far, not because he never joked around.

He's not scaring them because he's a below-average pro now. Simple as that. I'm all for him having some fun - he is playing with house money!

Yeah, we are not seeing the same thing. Difference between joking a bit and messing around.

Way too early for that. Had he been struggling to get above buck sixty ball speed, I would have an inclination to agreeing with you.

Tiger needs to focus more on NOT making bogeys rather MAKING birdies.

Just look at who missed the cut and tell me Tiger is below average. He hasn’t played a tournament since last summer. Pretty good IMO.

I really don't get the outrage displayed by some for Tiger's prank. But I guess people are crazy these days and they can find plenty of company on social media to get whipped up into a frenzy with. I'd actually love to get inside someone's head to understand the root of their outrage but I likely don't know anyone so petty.

Like it or not the 200th in driving distance on the pga tour is still ahead of the number one driver on the LPGA.

He made it on the number. Fine, let’s call it average.

He’s still a freakish talent, but my guess is that with his broken down body, his odds of making a cut or winning a tournament are no better than an average golfer on the pga tour. IMO, they should be a lot lower than the top golfers today (Rahm, Rory, etc.), thus he doesn’t scare the ‘em.

Of course, impossible to really know because he’ll never play a full schedule again.

So Lee Trevino throwing the snake over to Nicklaus and both of them having a laugh in a major championship playoff, that's just bad/dumb/whatever? They're not true competitors?

I'm still processing the fact that Tiger walks around with tampons in his pocket..

Tiger's been carrying that in his pocket for 2 years, just waiting for the perfect moment to hand it to JT.  He finally outdrove him.

Unfortunately, whether he meant it or not, he's denigrating women's golf.

The positive out of this is that after all these years Tiger is lightening up.  You never would have seen that in his prime when he was always deadly serious.

Yeah, I don't see it that way. It's a fact that women hit it shorter than men. So… whatever.

If he had given him a pacifier would the babies on Twitter have thrown a fit? 😄

I do see it that way. Guessing your daughter outdrives a lot of guys her age and many, many men.  Bit of a childish prank for a 47 year old man.

I’m childish too - I’m constantly treating my boys similarly in those moments

If, as Erik mentioned, Tiger had handed JT a pacifier, that would have been really funny and nobody would have been offended.  100% of toddlers using a pacifier would have just flicked some mashed potatoes at Tiger.

"Come on" what?  I have two firefighter friends who happen to be women... Kathy and Lorelei.  They bested all the men they went up against in the physical tests to get their jobs.  Are they outliers?  No.  They are just in good shape and work out regularly.  Sure, women on the whole, do not have the physical makeup of men.  But that is not a good reason for Tiger to pull a sexist prank.  BTW, he did quite well today with a 67.  I award him 2 tampons.

Of course. I don't care if he doesn't win. But it would bug me if that's his mindset now. He has plenty of gas left in the tank and more importantly, It goes against the Tiger anthem. He is the one insisting he can still beat everyone.

Apples to Onions. That was always Trevino's MO - precisely designed to distract, not to chum it up with Nicklaus or whoever..Gamesmanship.

Nicklaus also famously asked LT to zip it (politely, I am sure) one time at the start of a round I think.

Nicklaus was joking around with him. Right before a playoff for a major championship.

It wasn't one-sided.

Plus, attend a tournament, and watch the guys. They joke around, they talk, etc. during rounds. They're slow. They have a LOT of time out there.

    • If you play the same tees (course length). Expect to hit one 1-2 clubs more into every green. Probably closer to two. You will lose about 8-10 off every driver hit. You will then lose about 4-6 yards off every full swing iron shot. So, about 12-16 yards of total distance loss on each hole.  If you hit 9 irons into a par 4, you will hit 8 or 7 iron. A long par 4 now, where you hit 5 irons, you may need to hit a hybrid or fairway wood. Those par 5's you use to barely reach in two, you now do not reach at all.   If you play a 6000 yard course, you may need to move to a 5700 yardage to play the course the same way, having the same irons into the greens.
    • I haven't been here in several years, but I know that there are a lot of serious golfers here, so I thought this would be a good place to ask this question.  Forgive me if it's been asked before.   How will the rollback affect the average casual golfer who can on average hit his driver about 200 yards?   The reason I ask is because I am getting older, and I think if I was forced to give up distance because of this ball rollback, I might just quit playing.  And I think a lot of people would agree with me.
    • Now that it's official: I'm fine with the rollback. It's not going to be that big of change for most of us. I'd still prefer no rollback, but this is fine. Heck, if it makes tee times easier to come by in 2030, great. Somehow, I'm mad at the PGA Tour for being against this rollback. They said they wanted something more "modest." It's hard to imagine anything more modest than what the USGA did here. I don't think this really solves much with distance concerns except with extreme cases. Maybe Augusta can close a few tee boxes or something. It won't affect most courses. I don't think it will impact the important of distance on tour at all. NGLA is not going to host a US Open anytime soon, either. What are the odds that golf sees a downturn in the next 7 years that makes this rollback look like a really bad idea? Recreational golf is probably in its golden age right now. You can really only go down. It's possible that, in 2029, you don't want to scare golfers away by losing more distance. PGA Tour statement, in case someone hasn't seen it: PGA Tour, PGA of America oppose golf ball rollback decision as USGA, R&A adopt rule to limit distance - CBSSports.com Not everyone is happy with the decision by the USGA and The R&A to roll back the golf ball
    • It seems like after the PGA and PGA Tour gave a thumbs down to the proposed reduced distance ball Model Local Rule, that would have solely affected professionals and elite amateurs, the USGA moved to plan B: limit everyone's distance. The USGA recognizes that there is no "distance problem" with 99% of the golfing population. Unfortunately, they decided to throw everyone under the bus in order to capture the professional and elite amateur golfer. The 4% reduction does not seem like much. Also, the implementation date of 2030 is a long way off (2028 for pros/elites). Of course, there is nothing to stop the USGA from tweaking the Rule in a couple years or moving up the date if they see further issues develop. Potential litigation from manufacturers, however, would likely stop this. More likely they could announce a further reduction for 2032. Once we all become accustomed to the idea of a rollback, further reductions may follow.  Afterall, the original Federal income tax rates started at 1-7% in 1913.
    • I'm waiting for someone to come up with a way that 125mph clubhead speed results in a dead reaction, but 124 or less and 126 or higher results in a fast reaction. Something like a ball with a fluid layer that you only get to if you swing faster than 124mph, but it's thin, so once you reach 126mph you are connecting with the layer inside that and it gets faster again. It's probably obvious by now that I am not a golf ball design expert 🙂
