The Aussies certainly are having a good year on the PGA. Is that 4 wins now?! I'd love to see a Brit win this week (totally unbiased) but I can't see it.

It's not the weather, though, as you may expect ... But rather, Phil Mickelson is just starting his practice round. ;)

Due to inclement weather, they have closed the gates and will not reopen today. Purchasers of Monday Practice Round tickets will get refunds and be guaranteed an opportunity to buy Practice Round tickets for 2015.

Here is the interesting part. What happens to the people who bought these tickets on the secondary market? I'll bet that a lot of the people who had the opportunity to buy the Practic Round tickets sold them on the secondary market for a huge profit ( I did it myself a few years back).

The good news about the bad weather is this is the only day it is forecast to be bad. The rest of the week looks perfect. Of course, forecasts change so knock on wood....but at least for now, according to weather.com, looks like a great week.

That sucks ... there was a guy here on TST who said he got tickets for today, wasn't there??  (I couldn't find the thread, maybe he just posted in this thread a ways back.)

That's a good point. At least the ticket holders will get something back.

The weather here in Augusta SUCKS today.  Weather.com is telling me that it's 58 degrees, but it feels like 40.  It's supposed to be great the rest of the week.  Rain today was probably a blessing, because it's been pretty dry.

I just watched the "Stadler" interview, father and son playing together in the masters is pretty awesome. I'm fortunate enough to play with my father often, but couldn't imagine playing in an event of this magnitude. They both said it will not effect them on an emotional/mental level.... Whattya think??

How many days are you there?

114 days.

I'm not here for the tournament, I'm at Fort Gordon for temporary duty.  I tried to get a ticket--missed the lottery, and not willing to pay $500.  I might go trolling for exit badges one of the days.

Saw a sign today inside the gates that said badges needed to be scanned to allow re-entry. I'm wondering if the practice round badge is still valid for re-sale and usable if they weren't properly re-scanned on exit.  You might want to make sure that whoever you buy from had it done.  Wasn't like that few years ago - used to head out there about 2 pm if I didn't have a badge and usually got in for $20. Even getting a few hours was worth it, imo.

I was stationed at DDEAMC and would always put in for Thursdays for the Ft Gordon lottery and usually got a badge - and got there as early as possible and was one of the last "patrons" on the grounds. Couldn't get enough of the grounds -  fortunate also to get practice round badges for most days that I was stationed there (two x 3 yr assignments).  Good golf in the area (Gordon Lakes, Jones Creek, Forrest Hills, Cedar Creek, Goshen - even the public courses like Augusta GC (The Patch) and Aiken's city course were fun to play - as well as so many of the courses in SC (Hickory Knob, Pineridge, Persimmon Hill). Makes me want to return to the area.

Flipping to golf channel...saw some guys hitting on the range at sunset in cold steady rain.  Which made me wonder something.  Why would they be out hitting balls in cold rain when the rest of the week is going to have near-perfect weather?  It's not like missing a few buckets on one afternoon is going to ruin your swing.  I know that when I play in the rain I tend to shorten and slow my swing, which isn't a motion they'll need to practice for this event.

I'm sure it means nothing, but that's what came to mind.

Good column on Tiger Woods' legacy......http://voices.yahoo.com/tigers-chase-hold-but-legacy-set-12596455.html?cat=14

I've just had a little punt. Got Dufner to win. He hasn't been at his best lately but he is a cool customer and I fancy him to have a good week. Patrick Reed to finish in the top 5. Too much of a difficult course for an amateur to win but he'll give it a good shot.

Amazing stat from Chamblee: only 7 different lefties have played The Masters since 2003. 3 of those 7 players have won 5 of those 11 tourneys.

Interesting.  Hypothesis:  scoring on the par-5s is key, both to overall scoring potential and intimidation factor on the second nine.  3 of the 4 par-5s require moving the ball right-to-left, and if you can hit that shot high and soft (i.e. a fade shot) then you'll have a slight advantage.

(That said, I don't think Weir would have won if it hadn't been so wet and sloppy in 2003.  He doesn't hit the ball high, and he primarily hits a draw.  The course was so wet that year that traj and shape didn't matter as much.)

More likely it's just a statistical coincidence, but that's an interesting fact.

Shamble just said "Tiger is the oldest 38-year old golfer in the history of the game."  Apparently Shamble has never heard of a man named Ben Hogan.

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
