Smoked my first turkey breast on my "new" Weber smoker. Best turkey I've ever had.

Very nice. Next time, if you haven't ever tried it, put some fruit in the rack below for aromatics. A few halved apples and a lemon. Some swear you can't taste the difference, but I think you definitely can. We used to smoke chicken breast with hickory and apple wood, then add some halved apples directly below. Best chicken ever.

Too lazy to cook lately. Even though it's been hot I stop nightly, if I don't golf, and pick up a medium combo pho no noodles with extra tripe and tendon.

Yellow coconut curry chicken with sauteed sugar snap peas and coconut ginger fried rice. Last night's dinner was chorizo stuffed sweet peppers and guacamole. I forgot to take a picture, and they didn't last too long...

I've only had my smoker out once this year to make some moink balls and pork chops. Love me some slow smoked meat.

I was really nervous about "Moink Balls" since I had to Google what the hell they were. Now that I did, I will definitely be making these sometime. (They're bacon wrapped meatballs smothered in bbq sauce for those who are curious)

They are awesome. I try different combos. I think my favorite is sausage balls that I roll in a rub, then generously wrap in bacon and sprinkle with a bit of brown sugar for flavor. I put them on the top rack of the smoker and let the bacon grease drip on the pork chops below. I guess those would just be oink balls though.

I am hoping to smoke my first brisket here soon. I had an UDS smoker which I miss and loved, now it have a smokey mountain from Weber which I like but not as much as my UDS. Any good brisket advice out there. I have done scores of Boston Butts and a few ribs but no brisket yet.

I've never attempted brisket myself. I've heard they can be a bit tricky.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
