My favorite is Gary McCord, I find him humorous. I will agree on Berman being annoying, but it's because he does football, not golf. If he knew about golf then it would be one thing, but it just seems like he's always yelling and doesn't fit in.

Berman is a douche nozzle. He needs to be banned from TV.

I really, really dislike Johnny Miller and Brandel Chamblee. But if I had to pick one to listen to, it'd be Miller, because he is not on the same level of shithead as Chamblee.

It's okay because he's a football commentator? And not golf? Then what the hell is he doing golf then!

That's why I said he's my least favorite. He sounds like he's still on the gridiron commentating about the latest big play by the defense. I'm just saying that golf is a completely different ballgame to commentate, with different styles of delivery being the norm than, "Oh my! What a play! Did you see that hit?!? I can't believe it!" In football they're getting the crowd pumped up, it's generally more of an analytical approach on the golf course, or at least a bit more reserved. At a minimum though, the golf commentators usually talk a lot more quietly because there's nothing that they need to talk over. Berman doesn't quiet back down to golf commentator levels.

The reason I felt it would be different if he knew golf better is because if he wasn't a big name in football he wouldn't be allowed near the microphone on a golf telecast. He's only on because he's a big name that people know.

My bad, didn't understand. He must have some pull or pics of someone! To get on tv for golf!

Isn't he a major stock holder of ESPN? At least before diznee bought ESPN.

Don't know about that, but he has been with ESPN since it's birth.  If they show it again, watch the documentary they made for their 30th anniversary.  Berman started as a sportscaster a month after ESPN's founding in 1979 when he was 24, but he looked like he was barely out of high school.  ESPN only survived at all because of the $1 million and $5 million investments from Anheuser Busch in 1980 and 1981 while the network was still finding its stride.  Best I can find is that Berman is still working for ESPN under a contract which was most recently renewed in 2010 (Wikipedia).  No indication of any investor status.  He is seen as the "face" of ESPN.

You guys in the states are fortunate you have so many good commentators. For an excruciating lesson in boring you need to watch any European Tour programme!!!!

Mailman

It's a pretty laid-back style for, what is for us, a morning telecast. I haven't watched it closely enough to know exactly what the commentators' names are. One fella sounds like he's reading a bedtime story.

Still not bad to have on television when its not football season.

I remember my buddies being addicted to the channel and Berman back then (late 80's) but I also thought he had a big part of the pie. I didn't feel like researching it.

Gotta put Johnny Miller on top of the list. Especially compared to Faldo. Faldo had the greater career by far but doesn't take himself too seriously at all while Miller is constantly putting down today's players and insinuating that he could do it better. Not to mention how he constantly references his wins while on air. For those saying Faldo is pompous, I'm guessing you just think that all people with British accents sound pompous, because if you actually listen to most of what he says he comes across as surprisingly light hearted and good natured.

That $6 million investment by Anheuser Busch sounds like a pretty good guess by them.  I think that they got a good return on it.

I vote Berman, but after this weekend, can't decide between Kelly Tilghman and Jim Nantz for "Most Maudlin."

Chris Berman the ESPN guy does golf now?  I haven't seen him in probably 10 years and back then he was doing football.  Anyway when I watched a little of this recent open coverage the two guys doing the commentating were so painfully terrible I had it muted 85% of the time.  Johnny Miller was one of the guys, not sure who the other one was.  I voted Miller, the guy just seemed like a flaming douchebag.
