Don't they teach about it in High School?

As a core subject? I doubt it. Maybe in a European history class. But Fourputt's right, we're OT here....

I don't remember ever discussing it at all. In fact the only reason I have a basic knowledge of it is because of the book "A Course Called Ireland." Tom Coyne goes through the history in a couple different chapters.

He has a lot of star power. A good humble kid from n Ireland. World star and still does good for golf like helping teach kids. Reminds me of a guy like Kevin durant. People think they aren't fierce enough to puss the envelope and run the game.

Honestly.  It is like we all have ADD when trying to stick to the subject.

As for Rory, he has the personality, ability and looks to become quite a star.  I just hope the media and paparazzi don't chase him down the way they usually do.

I think McIlroy has shown a personality that has star potential. He wasn't embarrassed to take to the tennis court and play a couple of points against his then gf, despite his awful tennis skills. It's more an aw shucks aura than the destiny aura that Woods emanates. It doesn't show on the course, in commercials but more in everyday situations. In press conferences he's willing to share more info than Woods did as well.

Rory seems like a regular guy, very likable,  and someone I feel that I'd enjoy playing golf with.  Much as I respect Tiger for his accomplishments, I could never say that about him.  Tiger always seems too wrapped up in himself.  It's in part for that reason that I feel that Rory's potential for star power could actually be a bit higher than Tiger's other than the obvious racial draw that Tiger has.

Rory will undoubtedly have a bigger fan base outside of the US, and his base is growing rapidly here.  For me, his difficulties in 2013 showed that he's just a guy who can struggle like the rest of us, and his success this year shows that he has the toughness to work through it, whether it's caused by issues with his game or with his personal life (or a mix).  It made him more likable to me because it gives him a side that I can identify with, at least in a small way.

I would like nothing better than to see him really take off now, to set a high mark for anyone trying to chase him, while still continuing to be the likable Irish lad that he is (and yes, I know it's Northern Ireland).

You wouldn't enjoy playing golf with Tiger?!!! I know he's a bit of an ass, but shit he is Tiger! I'd love to play one on one with MJ & watch him relentlessly destroy me and bully me. :-D

I can only think of one reason to play golf with Tiger, and that's so I could brag about it for the rest of my life.  I think that I'd enjoy a round with Rory a lot more.  I just don't see Tiger as a pleasant playing companion, and the social aspect is a lot of what I play for.

I feel like playing with someone like Jerry Kelly or Rickie Fowler would be great. And yeah, @boogielicious we have some serious ADD.

I disagree. In terms of personality, Rory is the new Gary Player - quiet, thoughful  and friendly.

Another point: Improved international air travel helped make PGA golf a truly international sport. So, I'm not sure we have to rely just on Americans to help us grow the game in the USA.

Interesting post. Gary is certainly friendly but as far as thoughtful and quiet, I disagree. He's a good guy but he is 100% about promoting Gary Player and has the ego to do it. He is far from a humble man.

Fallon's gonna make them compete at something I bet. Duh. Letterman once made Steffi Graf serve to hit a triangle of bottles. Hope it's not that bad.

Well as long as it doesn't involve a straight driving competition the audeince will be safe from Tiger

I'm inclined to say that since they're both signed to Nike, they probably are competing for something. Interesting to see how the normally personable Rory compares against cold Tiger. If Rory goes through the Irish gears seamlessly he could look like the refreshing new face. Tiger's often detached and humourless personna could look very old-fashioned very quickly.

Expect RC banter though. Having said that, Tiger might feel more comfortable yet and loosen up a bit

Are you trying to use irony here?

Gary Player is quite possibly the most egotistical player that ever lived!!!!!

Do a bit of reading about what he was like when he was traveling around with Arnie and Jack, and what they had to say about him.

Read about tyne nightmare that is playing with him in a pro-am.

Read about his miraculous ball finding skills and club selections and changes that lead to great lie in the rough.

Listen to any interview he's ever given.

What planet are some people living on!!!!?????

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

In that environment, Tiger will be great. He puts up a wall for sure but I've seen him in enough informal sessions to think he's probably an engaging funny guy away from the cameras. And, he's not afraid to be a little self-deprecating, which is how the bit will probably go down. He'll acknowledge Rory's recent greatness, kid about how bad he's been, then remind Rory that the King (not Arnie) still reigns. I'd love to tee it up with him. He'd probably rip me mercilessly for my ugly swing but if I ever picked up a skin on him (it could happen), I'd rip him back. I'm certain it would be a blast.

    • Day 37, June 10.  Today was primarily WFH, so I had several practice sessions (indoors, off a mat, into the net).  At least one each of U, 9, and 6-iron full swings with the usual priority.   I also tried a few times a putting type stroke with my 4H, as something I should probably learn how to hit (and what it does), but the mechanical shot at home off a mat doesn't tell me much of what it's doing.  That's something I should probably try on a real green, not during a round until I've tried it.
    • Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.
    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
