Good for an 85, 13.0 differential, and low gross in my flight in a club tournament.

Hole 12, par-3 on paper, I tried to lay up (trouble all around the green, no real trouble short) and hit my hybrid amazingly but into a bunker, took a 6.   That was one of only two holes (the other being #17) where I had worse than bogey;  also one of only two where I had worse than the C-flight average score on the hole.

I think next time, on hole 12, I am still going to lay up, but I am going to lay up shorter... one of the better players in my club says he lays up with a 7-iron, but I suspect his distances are better than mine.  Instead of 3H, next time I am going to hit a 5-iron.  I am treating this hole as if it were a short par-4 with trouble surrounding the green (which it sort of is -- in my flight, field average is almost always over 4 anyway).

It's the #10 handicap hole, so maybe I'll revisit this strategy if I get to single digits.  But seeing as how a 1-handicapper and a 6-handicapper in the club both told me they lay up on that and play for 4-chance-for-3, maybe I won't.

Hole 17... 93 yards for my third shot, going for GIR... tried to hit a wedge low, a shot I haven't practiced what was I thinking? Hooked it into weeds, barely chipped on, three putted (missed a short one for a 6).  Stupid stupid.  Head wind, 93 yards, no real trouble behind the pin from where I was, I should have hit a full UI (that goes 100 yards in calm conditions) and if it's short, it's short.  :-(

Oh well, at least I'm making note of these mistakes.

Edit this was Saturday's round, not this morning.

Shot 4 under 68.  5 birdies, 1 eagle, 1 double and 1 bogey.

Best round of the year so far. Not a long course. Greens were punched a couple of weeks ago. Still a bit bumpy. Made my far share so can't complain much.

Walked up as a single and though I'd have time to hit a bucket of balls first but was told that I had to tee off within 15 minutes so no practice.  Put up a 10 on the first hole because the bunkers were rock hard and I couldn't get out and into the green and instead kept praying it last the rough.  Balls were going left and took me some time to adjust.  Then hit a terrible 8 iron off the tee on the fourth hole and it then went from bad to worse.

Once I got past those four holes, I shot 16 over the next fourteen holes with 4 GIRs.

Not too unhappy with my ball striking over that stretch as I may have been able to shoot under 100 had my putting not been terrible.  I made zero putts even though I had many make-able ones.

Shot an 87, good for a differential less than one over my handicap.  Despite four doubles and a triple.  Still plenty to work on.  10 hole stretch where I played in a total of 3 over -- I'm very happy with that.

First time playing the redesigned North, hit it well, putted poorly to say the least. Shot 73, hit 15 greens, two three-putts for par on par 5's, only one birdie. Which was a big putt because it was a $25 swing 😉

The holes are all basically the same, greens are in great shape, more slope to them than before.

80 that should have been a 76. 3 doubles - 2 of which should have been bogeys really (the other was lucky not to be a 7...). Made only 1 of 5 birdie putts inside 15 feet. Oh well. Striking the ball pretty good, though. Putted a lot better today overall.

Worst round in a very long time.  This is a fairly easy course (69.7/114) and I didn't break 90.  So many shots that just felt, afterward, like I gave up on them.  9-iron from fairway to a green, hit it weak and into a bunker.  PW from fairway into a center-placed pin, weak slice into a bunker.  Weak tee shots.  Super weak pitches -- a few 35 yarder from good lie that should be easy to at least put within a makeable distance or at least "chance to make and very high chance of two-putt or better" but giving poor shots.  Maybe it's a sign I'm doing something wrong, maybe it's just variability.

Or maybe it's wearing long pants on a hot day.  I do think I'm going to go back to wearing shorts at least on hot days and will return to longer pants when the weather is a bit cooler.

Hit it well today, could have been a mid 60's round but just didn't make enough putts. Had a silly 3-putt on 10 and missed an almost gimme par on 3.

sigh what this round could have been if not for holes 1 (which I usually do well on), 12 (sigh) and 16 (sigh).  Birdie on #3 though, only my second birdie at my home course in 2018.

72 at The Walker Course in Clemson, SC

4 birdies, 4 bogeys. First place in my flight.

The course was in fantastic condition except for soft fairways and cart path only.

Drove it okay. Hit my wedges very well.

After an 8 on the par-4 7th, I thought I had forgotten how to play golf.  Despite how horribly I played that, even inside 100 yards (and hence all those awful shots counting as short game), I had less than 1 shot lost short game and also less than 1 shot lost putting.

I played the remaining 11 holes in a combined +5, so maybe I learned on the next tee.

2 GIR + 2 fringe in regulation + 7 other near-GIR.  On the three long par-4s, I was putting for par on each (one was even a near-GIR).  I managed to also hit a par-4 green for my third shot from the wrong fairway. after a snap fade from the right hole.  This was interesting all around and I'm back to long game being a weakness.  Should make for a fun club championship next week.

Except for a great curved (faded) 9I around a tree to a good spot on the ninth green (over a bunker, using a side slope to funnel the ball to the hole, from the rough… the works), a pretty lousy round, really.

In more ways than one.

Oy, another round with a double, hooked one out of bounds on 8. Driver sucked on the front, good news is that I "figured it out" on the back and hit every fairway.

One double, two bogeys, one birdie. Had great chances to make 3-4 birdies on the back nine to salvage a decent round and just didn't make the putts.

Tough Second nine yesterday. I hit 6 of my first 12 greens in regulation, and then didn't hit even one after that...and struggled to even hit nGIR. My tee game went from great on the front to horrid on the back. The front nine still has me feeling positive about the direction my game is going...just need to hold it together next time. Got a match against a buddy of mine that has beaten me recently coming up so I am gonna be prepping hard for that.

    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
    • I had two events the past two days. Yesterday I was playing a course blind. Hit it solid. Hit 9/14 fairways, 12/18 greens, 34 putts. Many of those putts were the result of balls that were close-ish to the hole when they landed, but wound up a long way away once they'd finished rolling (backwards mainly). Then today, hit 11/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 37 putts, and shot 80. 8 over par and it wasn't particularly pretty. My big problem today was my pitching. I was inside 100 yards of the hole and off the green on 9 occasions.  1st - drive to about 75 yards, fanned a 58 degree short and right. On the green, but a good 40 feet away and good two putt from there (so took 3) 2nd - laid up to a bunker and it's narrow past it, so had 165 in, missed it right with an 8 iron. Wet rough, chip from about 5 yards off the green and the club snagged. It got on the green, but only temporarily. Overcorrected a bit on the next one and hit it a bit firm and it rolled out to about 35 feet. Putt didn't break and it ran on a bit and I missed the one back (greens were fast and a little bumpy, which didn't help, but doesn't excuse either). (took 5 to get down from close to the green) 4th - had about 95 from the right rough, hit it on the green and two putts (3) 5th - 90 from the fairway, tugged it and it got a firm bounce, chipped on and hit what I thought was a decent chip, but it ran out down the hill and two putts from 20 feet (4) 7th - 65 from the fairway, significant upslope and hit it a bit hard, ran long left against the collar. Tried to blade a PW, but it got under a bit so didn't advance it anything like far enough. Made a good two putt from there (4) 11th - 63 from the fairway, hit a squirrelly pitch on the green and two putts (3) 12th - 75 from the semi-rough, caught it a bit clean and it wound up on the back edge. Putting down a tier and it ran 8 feet past (that was actually a really good putt and couldn't have done any better I don't think) and missed that (4) 13th - 55 from the fairway, overcorrected and hit the big ball before the small ball. Then made a stellar up and down from 25 yards short to an elevated green with a putter (3) 15th - down in three from a greenside bunker (3) That was it. The other 9 holes I hit it on the green from outside 100 yards. So on those 9 occasions, I took 32 shots to get in the hole. 3.56 average. Terrible. Reason I'm posting this in here is to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to work on my contact with pitch shots. I don't have access to a grass range. Only mats and it's easy off a mat. Partly I think my problem is I've hit it off mats so much this winter that I've lost my judgement on where the ball is versus the ground because of the leeway granted. Open to ideas. I also suspect that under pressure I stand a bit closer to it and then get steep and hit down on it and it puts me in a bad place, but I can't seem to get myself to not do that.
