I really want to take the game more seriously this year.  I have been dinking and dunking around for kicks and giggles for almost 3 years now. The game is still very enjoyable to me, but I want to actually get better.  I'm going to invest in some lessons, get fit for clubs (finally), and start working toward a consistent, repeatable swing.

1. Single digit handicap. (Technically, I achieved this in 2014, but my three best rounds are about to disappear. ...and my single digit handicap along with them.)

2. Get fit into irons. (I got fit into a putter in 2014.  Love it!)

3. Play over 51 rounds for the year. (I *almost* play weekly golf.)

4. Improve my driving to the point where I hit 50% of the fairways. (I am usually close to the fairway, but I only hit about 25%.)

5. Have fun.

Mine is simple, improve at chipping, and to work on more solid ball contact with my irons. To me chipping being paramount. I theorize that there really are no great putters, but great chippers. If you're within 5 feet of the pin you're more than likely gonna drain it. As far as solid contact, I tend to balloon the ball with my irons, thereby losing distance. I'm the only guy I know that hits his 7 iron 138 yards (while almost knocking police helicopters down), but his driver 270 yards. Gonna work on transferring weight more efficiently.

2015 Goals:

1) Get an eagle --> I'm going to have to work on accuracy with my hybrids and woods

2) More straighter and longer drives --> Need to work on some errors in my swing and make it more consistent

3) Make better contact with all clubs especially irons --> Again need to work on my swing

4) Eliminate "open club face at impact" problem --> Not quite sure how to fix this one yet.

Most of my goals relate to me fixing my swing, so that's the main goal this year.

We did. :)

Pick up a copy of LSW… you'll see why the FIR % number is not particularly important. :)

I want to average 275 yards with my driver (last year averaged 263) I want to break par on 18 holes (broke par on 9 last year for first time) I want to get my handicap below 1 (2.7 was my low last year)
Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

1) Handicap: in the single digits.

2) Driving: 6+ fairways per round.

3) Swing: get closer to an in-to-out swing path.

4) Clubs: get fit for clubs.

5) Rounds: more than 50 rounds for the year.

I have 3 ...

1. Relax a bit on the golf OCD ... each of the last 3 years I've played over 100 rounds.    Like to get it down to 75 or so & devote more time to wetting a line.    Looking for better life balance this year.

2. Break 80

3. Get to the course early enough to give myself time to warm up with some putting (never seem to get there early enough to do this) ... putting is the bane of my golf & must be improved.

Mine are pretty simple going into this season.  Finished the yr with my Cap higher then normal, it's sitting at 15.2 (I actually need to change that now on my profile that I'm mentioning it)

1.) bring that cap down to the 12's and stay there.

2) putt better, I can be a horrible putter at times, even more so on Par3's, and have less 3 putt's in my round...they will kill you

3.) practice more, even if it's just a small bucket of balls 1-2 times a week in between a round

4.) play more

5.) walk more / ride less

Thanks for moving my post here.

I have LSW, but havent read it since October. Need to refresh myself. Yes, I do remember that a drive 300 yds in the rough is better than a 225 drive in the fairway. the NGIR is the biggest factor that will improve my game this year.

Goal number one is to survive the year without having another back surgery. I've already had two and my back surgeon has warned me number three is just a matter of time. Luckily, I guess, I'm told this will happen whether I play golf or not so go ahead and play. I realize I'm playing on borrowed time so I'll try to appreciate every round no matter how I play.

Goals before end of June:

1) Drop HCP to below 9. Absolutely. It will update to 11.9 on 03/15.

2) Build a golf room in my backyard by end of April. It might be a pre-fab or will build it from

scratch with help from my neighbor.

3) Play at least 2 tournaments. Have one scheduled in June.

4) At least one more trip to Golf Evolution.

Goals by end of the year:

1) Register at least 30 rounds.

2) Play at least 2 more tournaments.

Great thread.

Improve. mostly by correcting what I did wrong last year.

Dont over swing, you dont need to be the longest guy out there. You dont need to try to be the longest guy out there.

Hit the fairway. 200 yrds from the fairway for a second shot is better than 50 and in the trees!

take a breath before you swing.

Stay focused on the game plan

Swing easy and let the club do the work.

Drop atleast 1 stroke off my 16 handicap

Have fun and dont stress!

Finally-Get back to the club championship, dont lose by 1 stroke (a double and triple bogie to start the round did not help)

    • Patrick Cantlay's strokes gained from 2024: I wonder if he takes more time on approach shots given that was the worst part of his game last season. And then here are his 2023 stats: Much better ball striking season. I wonder if there are any differences in his times between these two seasons. I tend to think he's just slow in general, but it'd be interesting to see his time differences.
    • Not sure, I think players have their own pace. Speith was always slow, regardless if he was in contention or not. Well, more so when he was in contention. It might be a push there on that question.
    • Without knowing the study at all, this could be more of a reflection of who is tournament ready and who isn't. If you have a quick trigger, it could mean your swing is working really well. Fidgeting, lots of rehearsals, maybe means your swing's not functioning as well as you'd like it to and you need more time to feel it all out before you hit your shot.
    • A study done by the European Tour shows spending less time over the ball produces better shots.  This makes sense. I can see where if you are over the ball a long time you lose the ability to make a more athletic swing. There is also the possibility of just overthinking the shot while over the wall as well and not being in the right headspace.
    • I recently picked up a vintage Ping Hoofer Lite carry bag.  I am not sure how old it is but estimate it is probably from around 2012 or so? I cannot figure out how to adjust the straps! I am going to try to attach a picture of the bag and will also describe it below. I cannot figure out how to adjust the straps in a way that makes the bag comfortable to carry.  The bag also seems to want to be more upright/ vertical than how you would normally carry a bag like this. I have tried to search this site and others on the web but almost all info is on the newer ping Hoofer bags which have quite a different design. The bag is pretty minimal in terms of pockets and has no handle on the top.  It has 2 backpack straps that are not connected to each other.  They are connected to the top of the bag and in the middle of the bag above the primary ball/ gear pocket. Any feedback appreciated, thanks for your help!
