So now that our local cable company has increased our monthly bill for the umpteenth time (now $200/month for cable and internet), I've about had it and want to join the other millions of Americans who have cut the cable cord. Basically the only things on TV I watch are golf and college basketball. So I'm wondering from fellow golf fans out there who have cut the cord- how are you able to watch tournaments and are you limited in what you can watch without cable? I enjoy watching golf channel but it seems like there's no way to do that without a cable subscription....am I wrong on that? Any help would be much appreciated.

It's more complex than that though. You pay for channels you don't watch, but other people are paying for channels you do watch (someone who doesn't watch ESPN, for example). I don't know if it would

I finally was able to convince the wife to do this.  We replaced cable with Sling and will continue Netflix.  Very happy with the choice at a $90 savings per month.

I cord cut years ago. I don't miss it one bit. It has also been amusing to see the price of internet rise and rise as more and more people cord cut. But you're right, it is hard to get sports without some type of cable package. You're basically limited to what gets shown on broadcast TV then. I think they're a services out there where you can pick and choose streaming channels.

I'm still waiting for a bundle package from Youtube or Hulu.   I still have a Roku with Netflix, Hulu and CBS All-Access.   It works.

Not sure what forum this would fit into, so figured I'd offer it up here and mod can move to whereever it belongs...

I'm cutting cable after the Masters but still want to have the chance to watch The Golf Channel and ESPN. Those are really the only channels I watch. I figured it's not worth paying $160 in cable for two channels. What's the best alternative for that? Can you still watch Golf Channel on Apple TV? Firestick? I'm not real tech savvy with that stuff so not sure if the options are there for it.

Just cutting cable will not get you the Golf Channel or ESPN.  You'll need some type of subscription to a service to receive those channels.    Youtube TV will get you ESPN but not the Golf Channel.    Hulu TV has both the Golf Channel and ESPN.   I have Hulu but not Hulu TV so I can't confirm it is a good choice.  

Note: there is still issues trying to get local channels with the online TV services.    Most network TV is still on-demand.

YouTube TV streams your local networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, etc) plus has Golf Channel and a lot of other sports and cable networks. Their cloud DVR is fantastic, with unlimited storage. Was $35 per month until March 14, now $40. Watch on any device (laptop, phone, ROKU streamer. Can't wait to get home and cancel my cable TV ripoff service.

I'm using YouTube TV on a Roku and it works pretty good. Still not as easy as the old Cable TV and a remote but good enough. I didn't even realize they raised the price already.

 

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

@gregsandiego,  Does that work with multiple TVs within the house?  Can I watch one thing in the den and my wife another in the living room?  Each of my TVs has a Roku.

You can get GC also via SlingTV. I think it's $25 for the blue package then $10 for the sports package that has GC. Then it's $5 for the DVR which is limited. I forget how many hours, it's not a lot. You can't skip through commercials and I think it's for 1 tv. I used it for the Olympics on a Roku it's not bad but the ads.

I'm considering as well.  I've looked at the different options and the problem with DirecTV Now is that they put the Golf Channel in the $60/mo "Go Big" package.  Can someone confirm that Hulu TV has it included in their $40 Live TV package?  It looks like they do.

It's more expensive to add on HBO to Hulu ($15 vs $5) but that doesn't make up the difference.  Plus Hulu has cloud DVR as well.  I'm leaning Hulu Live TV right now and adding another Apple 4k TV.

Also wondering if I'm going to have to up my internet package as well to handle the throughput of streaming plus the kids gaming at the same time.

Playstation Vue.  Big and significant enough that DirecTV uses them as a comparison.  Don't know of anyone that uses them though.

One other consideration for me is NFL.  I watch an out-of-market team so I'd need Sunday Ticket.  if you cut the cord and go to streaming you can't get the online-streaming version unless:

  • You are in an apartment or
  • Your signal is blocked

So that answers the question if I should go with DirecTV so I could add Sunday Ticket and stream the games that way.  With all the people cutting the cord I'm surprised they aren't using this as a hook.  I'm guessing there is some other reason.

Leaning Hulu Live right now.  I haven't had the Sunday Ticket in years but wanted the option.  I'm guessing it will become available at some other time.  I could get Game Pass for $50 and just watch the replay.

It won't help with Sunday ticket or the golf channel, but don't sleep on the value of an OTA antenna as part of the answer.  I live about an hour away from Denver and I can get the network's broadcasts and a bunch of other stuff.  And the pictures are better than images from streaming.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

      Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.

      I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
